Just some bright orange poppies in the sun on a summer afternoon. I took photos of a neighbor’s garden and intentionally angled one of them to have the poppies grouped against a dark background with no leaves or buds and as few stems as possible, and no black centers, just a big mass of orange, and kind of abstract.

I used acrylic for this for a change from my usual pastel, which was the medium I’d planned when I took the photos, “if” I ever took the time to paint it. I haven’t used acrylic for a while and want to get some practice in, and that’s another thing these painting challenges help with—experimentation.

It’s painted on a masonite panel and the entire background is vertical strokes of phthalocyanine green, just the perfect bluish rather than yellowish green to complement the shades of orange and really make them flash.
