Apples and Oranges in Pairs for a Discount

"Reflecting on Each Other" and "Fruit" paired up.

“Reflecting on Each Other” and “Fruit” paired up.

Small paintings are nice when paired or in groupings, especially little still lifes and florals. I painted these two little pastels years apart but decided I could pair them especially with a similar frame.

I have fun adding finishes to salvage frames. For years “Fruit” had been framed in the frame above, but with its original bright gold finish because sometimes they work well with small still lifes, and several did sell, but not this one. After about a decade I  was pretty tired of it and had a few others of the same gold frame. I mixed a creamy white acrylic that was like the warm white color really old oil-base white paint turns, brushed on layers, chipped a little, then rubbed off on edges to create the vintage, shabby chic look.

Detail of frame.

I like them both much better now!

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“Fruit”

Fruit, framed.

Fruit, framed.

I did this quick little sketch while teaching a class in plein air sketching and working with minimal materials. It’s an orange and a red apple and a green apple with blue shadows. I’ve always liked it. and finally decided to frame it up.

Original pastel, 5.5″ x 3.5″, 2000. The mats are 2.25″, white under mat and deep orange suede top mat.

“Reflecting on Each Other”

At this angle I could see a little splash of orange on the Granny Smith and a few specks of green on the Clementine. The light on each of them, the shadows and shapes and the shades of green and orange were almost too many to identify. I took the photo several years ago of my fruit bowl. How fun when you can use your fruit as a painting subject, and then eat it. That’s really a very good deal.

Reflecting on Each Other, Pastel, 5″ x 7″, 2017. The mats are 1.5″, white under mat and forest green top mat.
