“Back to Front” Clay Pendant, Revisited.

Selection of pendant styles.

This small pendant is made of polymer clay with a stamp of my sketch “Back to Front” impressed in the clay. It comes in four different shapes with a little variation in size from 1″ to 1.5″and about 1/8″ thick, and comes with an 18″ black flocked cord.

I initiated this pendant in 2016 using air-dry clay because it had that matte clay appearance I liked. I sold out of them and had no requests for them so I put them on the virtual back shelf. But it must be a sign it’s time for them again that I saw a few friends wearing theirs and others told me how much they loved their pendant. You don’t have to twist my arm any more than that to get me to get back to my studio to make more. And never underestimate how much random comments like that mean to a person who makes handmade goods.

One of the reasons I’d put them on the back shelf to rethink was the performance of the air-dry clay. I loved the porcelain finish on it, but even with the matte varnish coating customers had trouble with the clay sometimes absorbing moisture if they got wet and even dissolving. I had checked this with the manufacturers prior to using the clay, but possibly I should have used more varnish, and sometimes things don’t work out as you think.

Polymer clay works just as well and doesn’t have any problems with water—when they are baked, that’s that. The finish is just as fine and there is no need for a protective coating. And they are much quicker to make since I don’t need to wait several days for the clay to dry.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The image is my brush pen sketch “Back to Front” impressed with a rubber stamp I had made of the image. I’d intended to make only one shape and, but once I get into a project I have to explore all the possibilities. In the past I’d also offered it with other cords and wires, but the black flocked cord was the most popular so I’ve stayed with just that one.

“Back to Front” is just how I visualized this “line drawing”—from the point of Bella’s tail that meets her back, out and back and around and over to her shoulder, then over to her face, from back to front. The little feline, I was so concerned I’d muss it up. You can see more sketches on The Creative Cat.

Your pendant may vary slightly from the samples shown below because I make each by hand. Scroll down for more detail on shapes and styles, below.
