Cabochon Pendant, Sally's Profile

Cat Cabochon in Classic Black and White

Cabochon Pendant, Sally's Profile

Cabochon Pendant, Sally’s Profile

This cabochon design is actually an illustration, a little ink drawing of mine from decades ago, called “Sally’s Profile”. She was my lovely long-haired deaf white cat who is also the subject of this month’s desktop calendar. I drew this from a black and white photo I’d taken of her, loving the high contrast of sunlight and shadow on her silky fur. There’s more about the artwork, below.

As I’ve looked at the illustration over the years I’ve observed that it could just as easily be a black cat with highlights as it is a white cat, but most of all I love cat silhouettes.

I make a high-quality print of my artwork, trim it to fit the cabochon and frame and adhere it all together, then choose a cord or chain that coordinates with it.

This small pendant is made with a print of my ink illustration “Sally’s Profile”, inside a square antique silver metal frame and a 3/4″ x 3/4″ domed glass cabochon cover. It comes with a black 24″ bead chain.

A little more about the artwork

Sally’s Profile

This is from my years of “practice”, before I considered myself an “artist”. It’s drawn in black ink using a Koh-i-noor rapidograph technical pen left over from college. I was so inspired by those photos of Sally, and at around that time the veterinary hospital where I took my cats and all my rescues had asked me about a set of proprietary sympathy cards for cats and dogs. In the days before digital printing there was little way to easily reproduce halftone artwork, as photos are, so I told them the best idea for simple inexpensive cards, which was what they wanted, was line art drawings, and I already had a few ideas, this being one.

I diligently went about working out a style that was popular in the clip art books we used for the direct mail—okay, junk mail—ads we were designing at the time, using lots of dots and patterns to create tones and shapes. I had little control over my hands in drawing at that time, so I just slipped the photo under a piece of tracing paper and started inking it in. This is the result. I was pleased, and still like this little sketch. Sally’s profile was so specific, familiar, and so dear to me, the rest of it could be an aimless pattern but as long as I captured that nose and forehead I was happy.

Maybe someday I’ll actually do something with it! It’s not for lack of ideas…I’ve always pictured it as plain black and white, even with the black and white reversed. I’ve also pictured it as…get this…a Warhol-type screen print series. Stay tuned for more things.

Those sympathy cards never happened (guess I was destined to create sympathy cards, though) but I saved all the artwork I created; you can read a little more about this project, as well as other early ink drawings, here.
