Seasons Along the Panhandle Trail, All Photos

SUN SHADOW ICE & SNOW

seasons along the panhandle trail

original photos

Panhandle Trail quarry area as part of Rock the Quarry

I’ve been visiting the Panhandle Trail for nearly 15 years with my bike and on foot, for exercise and inspiration, more inspiration than exercise, packing in with backpacks of camera equipment and art supplies. I’ve taken thousands of photos along the trail and off in the woods, but I’ve also done a number of sketches while there in pencil, charcoal, pastel and watercolor, and arriving home in my studio to do more from photos. I’ve collected a number of these for an exhibit, but not in a gallery—right on the trail, where I’ve spent so much time and found these inspirations. It’s the place where I found the scene of one of my favorite paintings, “Dusk in the Woods”.

I use this trail all the time, and part of my giveback is to maintain their website and the little bit of social networking that we do, along with photographing things. I always volunteer during the event, usually in the kitchen dishing out easy food, but I decided I could give something a little different.

You’ll find me in my tent during Rock the Quarry, the annual fundraiser for the Collier Friends of the Panhandle Trail. I’ll have my exhibit set up and also have a small display of prints, photos and notecards I’ve created over the years of scenes from along the trail and off in the woods. Once Rock the Quarry is over, they all come home with me so this will be your only opportunity to see them all together, although I will set them up as an online gallery as I have been setting up each of my exhibits.

A portion of sales of art and merchandise during Rock the Quarry will benefit the Collier Friends of the Panhandle Trail.

I add the most popular paintings to my website, but I include many other images in my exhibit as well, including many photos. I will add the photos soon as well, but if you are interested in one, please let me know.

Woodland Sunflowers

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I love woodland sunflowers. No matter how many I see, or how many photos I have, I can always find another interpretation of their exuberant yellow expansiveness. The day in 2009 I photographed these woodland sunflowers along the Panhandle Trail I was captivated by fields of them leading off into the woods among the trees. Later, looking at photos, there was just something about this one that captured what I envisioned of the photo I wanted.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This photo, with the trees leaning in and the brightness above, made it feel as if I was in a secret, protected place, albeit cold, like the Winter Palace in the movie Dr. Zhivago.

When I saw the snow that morning, just an inch or two carefully blanketing each branch and twig in the tree outside my window I knew what my destiny would be if the snow stopped and the sun came out. It did, and I headed for the Panhandle Trail, on foot just planning about an hour of photos in the first half mile of the trail. Mission accomplished.

I based my 2017 “Sun Shadow Ice & Snow” exhibit on this series of photos. Read more about that exhibit on 2017: Sun Shadow Ice & Snow, Seasons on the Panhandle Trail.

When the clouds parted the sky was so incredibly blue and the clouds themselves sculptural, as in this photo where they seemed to mimic the shape of the sycamores when they were in full leaf.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

When I saw the snow that morning, just an inch or two carefully blanketing each branch and twig in the tree outside my window I knew what my destiny would be if the snow stopped and the sun came out. It did, and I headed for the Panhandle Trail, on foot just planning about an hour of photos in the first half mile of the trail. Mission accomplished.

As I drove there, looking at the sun and shadow play across the frosted hills and glow down into valleys I had an idea for two photos I wanted to capture. This was one of them, the frosted hills and the dark sky, just a streak of light to give the scene dimension, but the run of water was a totally unplanned and a perfect addition.

I usually try not to plan ahead for photos because it’s possible to miss others while focusing on a goal that may not even be possible. I was lucky this particular morning and not only captured the ones I wanted, but many, many more I would never have imagined.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Birthroot, Red Trillium, digital photo

Birthroot, Red Trillium, digital photo

I took at least a half dozen photos of red trillium on this outing on the Panhandle Trail, and on other days as well, but I love this photo of the red trillium for the interesting angle I could get, the repeating shapes, the two-color palette, capturing that uncertain spring light through the early tree canopy. I was lying on my belly on the trail propped up on my elbows so I could just look uphill over the layer of leaves in the little colony of these trillium with occasional flowers hovering over the leaves. It might also be that this red violet/burgundy is one of my favorite colors. In either case I find it a visually interesting composition. I had one framed on the wall because it’s included in my Panhandle Trail exhibit and it caught my eye each time I went past it. I hope it has this effect on you as well.

Trilliums are truly a magical harbinger of spring for me. I didn’t meet them until I was an adult exploring a tract of land that had been a farm, the buildings had been demolished and many trees cut and left to lay on the ground. I went picking through for something old to take away to remember what this land had nurtured and found an old handmade wooden stool that I still use on my deck. Among the long straight trunks of trees lying about I found a small colony of glorious white flowers with three petals open wide supported beneath by three wide, shiny green leaves growing from the leaf litter as if in defiance to their fate. I pulled out my wildflower guide book and identified them as large-flowered trillium and knew that when summer came the entire area would be bulldozed and by autumn there would be streets and houses here, and no trace left of the trillium. I dug up three and planted them in my back yard under my own trees. Digging up wildflowers to take home is NOT permitted, and on the two or three instances I’ve done this it was for the same reason: I knew the land and all that grew on it was to be bulldozed and those flowers would be no more. I enjoy bringing my photos home from the woods instead, knowing those flowers and the land is somehow preserved to visit forever.

The trillium grandiflorum in my back yard from that long-ago farm.

The trillium grandiflorum in my back yard from that long-ago farm.

Most spring flowers are small, but trilliums are different. They have many names too that refer to the different perceptions and uses people had for them. “Birth root” refers to the practice among Native Americans to use to help stimulate labor. There is also “wake-robin” because they appear about the time the robins do. This variety is also called red trillium or purple trillium, and, of all things, Stinking Benjamin. You can read this article to find out why, and to find out more about trilliums.

Below is a current framed print of this photo. It’s the first one in the list of options above.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This photo is “Cathedral of Trees”, a spot on the floodplain where trees have to reach high out of the valley to capture the sunlight and so grow tall and straight. The trail among the trees and bends through an area where the trees arch over the soft leaf-littered path like an entry way to a magical place and has the feeling of a high-ceilinged cathedral where the light comes in from clerestory windows.

It’s right off the Panhandle Trail in Collier Township, PA, and part of my “Sun Shadow Ice and Snow: Seasons Along the Panhandle Trail” exhibit. It’s so exciting to share some of my favorite places with people who might never otherwise see them.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered here because customers often want a custom size. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting.

You’re My Best Frond, digital photo.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“You’re My Best Frond” features two tiny fiddlehead ferns just emerged from the leaf litter along the trail, caught at just the right angle. They’re rooted in the spot so they’re kind of stuck with each other. It’s a good thing they’re “such good fronds”! It still makes me laugh whenever I look at it. This image is also available as a greeting card as part of my “Inspired by Flowers” set.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Dramatic Light

Dramatic Light

When I saw the snow that morning, just an inch or two carefully blanketing each branch and twig in the tree outside my window I knew what my destiny would be if the snow stopped and the sun came out. It did, and I headed for the Panhandle Trail, on foot just planning about an hour of photos in the first half mile of the trail. Mission accomplished.

As I drove there, looking at the sun and shadow play across the frosted hills and glow down into valleys I had an idea for two photos I wanted to capture. This was one of them, not necessarily the place, but the light illuminating the trees in front of the dramatically dark background and sky, the trail wandering off around a curve into an adventure.

I usually try not to plan ahead for photos because it’s possible to miss others while focusing on a goal that may not even be possible. I was lucky this particular morning and not only captured the ones I wanted, but many, many more I would never have imagined.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

While walking the trail that morning so many familiar views were disguised by the ice and snow and mystical light, like this view of the trail that looks as if it could be in mountains somewhere far away.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Great spangled fritillary, isn’t that a great name? I use it sometimes as a silly sort of interjection when I’m surprised. It really is this butterfly’s name, though, and I captured this photo of one intently feeding on really fragrant milkweed along the Panhandle Trail.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Joe-pye is a native wild plant, a soft pink in tufts on tall plants in the early autumn woods. Tiger swallowtail butterflies skip from one tall stalk to another, delicately walking on the fluff and feeding. The brilliant yellow, the colorful spots and the striped body look very festive.

Fiddlers

I saw completely different things in the flora than I’ve ever seen before while using color film or my DSLR, and the feeling was completely different. The scenes look mysterious, foreign, while the photos themselves appear vintage. I had originally wanted a dozen images, or at least six or eight, but these three really hit the spot.

Trillium

I took these photos in April 2020, just after the Covid shutdown began, and also just as I was getting back on my feet for hiking, six months after my hip replacement. My DSLR needed a repair but I couldn’t get it done right then. I pulled out my old Pentax K1000 fully manual film camera and a roll of black and white film someone had given me. I keep my favorite lens combination on this camera, the one I used to photograph all my favorite wildflowers: the original 50mm lens with a 1.25x converter which shortened the depth of field and added a wonderful soft blur all around the main subject.

Spring Cleaning

I always include a good bit of photography in my Panhandle Trail exhibit and like to share some interesting views on common scenes. I included this mini-exhibit within the larger exhibit for my 2021 Seasons on the Panhandle Trail exhibit. I call it a “mini-exhibit” because out of the roll of film I shot there were only three photos of emergent spring plants that followed a consistent theme and composition. But just the three was very nice.

You can also find these images singly in Seasons Along the Panhandle Trail, All Photos, Black and White Photography and Gardens and Wildflowers.

Spring Cleaning

“Spring Cleaning” is one of the set of three photos in “The Woods in Spring in Black and White,” taken with my old manual Pentax film camera with black and white film, a walk through the spring woods, typically full of emergent color and shape, but this time in black and white.

Here are the other two.

You can also find the images as a matted and framed set and singly in Seasons Along the Panhandle Trail, All Photos, Black and White Photography and Gardens and Wildflowers.

SHIPPING

Shipping within the US is included in all the prices listed. All shipping is via Priority Mail. Prints are shipped flat in a rigid envelope. Canvases are shipped in a box to fit with padding. Since this original is small it is also shipped in a box with extra padding.

CANVAS PRINTS

I order canvas prints as they are ordered here because. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting.
