Gift bags and boxes.

Gift Bags

From the first time I received a gift bag with feline artwork on it, I could picture my art on a gift bag. I’ve tried a few different methods and finally found one that works well: printing my art to size on a commercial-grade label and buffing it permanently onto a bag. The art can only be on the front because of the way the bag folds, but so many bag colors and styles exist and that keeps them lively.

These bags are medium-sized paper shopping bags, usually around 8″ x 10″ x 3″, but they vary slightly in size, color and finish, even in the same lot, some colors are seasonal and can’t be found anywhere  out of season, some have colored handles but most don’t. If you purchase more than one in the same design and color I will try to make sure they match.

Bags of any design can assort for the discount. To purchase quantities of three or six use the “3 BAGS” or “6 BAGS” items and type the design names in the box.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I call this one “the portrait I couldn’t resist”. Holly’s portrait wasn’t really commissioned, but I couldn’t help myself for painting her, and her person couldn’t help but buy her portrait, so it’s almost the same. Holly’s mom and dad are friends of mine and long-time cat rescuers as I described in the story “A Bridge Between the Ages”.

Holly is a congenial little calico who greets you at the door and knows she’s the center of attention. On the back of the rocker Holly is accessible to everyone who walks through the room and can see most of the first floor of the house. You can read more about Holly’s portrait and her rescue on The Creative Cat.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

One of my favorites photos of Cookie!

Not sure if Cookie was espousing the apple-a-day ideal, but she sure seemed to be enjoying sitting in the sun.

Or perhaps she was worried about the apples. Cookie did things like that, sat near things that needed to be fixed or moved or where something was somehow amiss. A few weeks before this photo the sun didn’t come in the window at this angle so the apples were safely out of the sun—and kitties weren’t necessarily inspired to sit there in the shade. When the sun moved so did the kitties, but I’ll have to move the apples myself. Kitties don’t do that kind of work.

I liked this photo so much I made it the back cover image for my calendar celebrating Cookie’s activities in the kitchen, In the Kitchen with Cookie and she’s also on a paper gift bag—see below.

Giuseppe stole my chair.

I sketched this on September 2, 2012, and on that day that I couldn’t sit down in my studio because a certain black cat had taken over my chair, so I was doing other things I could do standing because heaven forbid I move the cat. I remember I spun the chair and the light hit him just right and in the highlights and shadows in his fur I pictured the globe, blue and green, little bits of peach here and there, floating in the dusty cosmos of the Milky way, envisioning an ink sketch with watercolor in those colors.

And so I grabbed my watercolor pad and my favorite Pentel Hybrid Technica drawing pen and sketched his graceful cat curve and shoulders and big ears and minimal details. Then, because he often followed me when I left the room, I tiptoed so I wouldn’t wake him to get a jar of water and my watercolors and brushes and painted the interesting light falling on him from the window and from my work lights using the watercolors from my limited traveling palette, blue, green, purple, orange and yellow.

It was all over in about 15 minutes. I named the sketch “World Cat” not because Giuseppe represents the world of cats or cats of the world (though he might like to think so), but because I set it aside for the finishing glance and it really did look like an image of the earth from space, that lovely blue and green globe, that I’d seen in that first glance.

Or perhaps it worked out this way because I think the world of my cats.

Garden Sketch With Mimi Gift Bag

Garden Sketch With Mimi Gift Bag

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This was not what I’d intended but I like it anyway. It’s Mimi napping in the shadow on the cool bricks among the geraniums, near the vintage aluminum tub where I grow pole beans. Mimi was so happy to be outside she only rested in each position for less than a minute, and the sun was in and out behind the clouds. The temperature was in the 90s and we weren’t doing much but looking for a comfortable spot.

I had wanted something a little tighter in detail, but I like the details this one has. I did a light pencil sketch underneath because it’s so small I knew I’d run out of space if I didn’t give myself some guidance about Mimi, the geraniums and the barrel, but aside from that I just painted.

In part I was using the quick and easy eight-color grade-school set that’s easy to carry and use I really need to get a set with a greater color range if I’m going to paint outdoors.

But what was my purpose with this painting? Sometimes I sit down to capture the details of the moment, and some day I’d like to do just that with the reference photos from this, but with my actual sketch, and all my daily sketches, my purpose is just to capture the essence of the moment and share what moved me to render the scene. In this case it was a relaxed Mimi in the shade on a hot morning, stretched on those familiar bricks next to the cool anodized aluminum tub where I’ve always planted pole beans and surrounded by my geraniums saved from year to year. It was a scene I loved for my love of my garden, my appreciation of Mimi relaxing in a place she’d once hunted for food to feed her kittens, and the memory of the generations of cats before her who enjoyed that very spot, this little patio and the verdance of my garden.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Mr. Sunshine sat on the kitchen stool taking in the warm morning light from the back door and just a little of the cool reflected light from the dining room window. It all added up to an interesting mix of colors!

I used one of the new kids’ sets of oil pastels which are thinner than the usual to accommodate a child’s hand, but I got accustomed to that and was happy to see they were all of equal consistency and softness, and the colors did not disappoint. I’m still working through my van Gogh impressionism, though here I’ve used a color he would not have, the red violet; I’ve never seen it in any of his paintings.

This sketch is one of the Cats After van Gogh series.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This photo reminded me of my mother’s climbing red roses which grew up a trellis on the side of the house. These roses have always fascinated me because they just keep going–up the fence, over the fence, down the other side. As a watercolor it was pure pleasure, with enough color, light and shadow and shape for it to be interesting. The reflected light near the bottom, especially, was a joy to study and discover.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Another piece borne of January inspiration in my seed and flower catalogs, this little bunch of columbines was so joyful that it stayed with me. One of my favorite flowers, it is also a favorite of my mother, and I recreated the bouquet and gave this painting to her as a birthday present one year. She has since passed away and I’ve sold her home, and kept the artwork I’d done. I sold the original to a good friend to give to her mother but this image will always remind me of her.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

For someone who is a gardener and spends a lot of time in her yard–what a special place! If I can’t have it in my yard, at least I can paint it. The arbor sporting ivy, the old azalea crowning the entrance and the gate, mysteriously left ajar and leading to a stone path to another part of the garden.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Every autumn I move my geraniums into the corner of my basement. After resting for a month or two, perhaps responding to the lengthening days, they always bloom in mid-January and their variety of pinks is always welcome at a time of year when flowers are in short supply.

From the first time I received a gift bag with feline artwork on it, I could picture my art on a gift bag. I’ve tried a few different methods and finally found one that works well: printing my art to size on a commercial-grade label and buffing it permanently onto the bag. The art can only be on the front because of the way the bag folds, but so many bag colors and styles exist and that keeps them lively.

These bags are medium-sized shopping bags, usually around 8″ x 10″ x 3″, but they vary slightly in size, color and finish, even in the same lot, and sometimes they even have colored handles. If you purchase more than one in the same design and color I will make sure they match.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Just one little sliver of sunlight crept in to touch the vase and the roses were illuminated and irresistible. I sketched this standing in my kitchen as quickly as I could, hoping I could catch all I saw.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I knew I’d love to paint the tulips, but I really needed to learn to paint the rust on the teapot. I intentionally kept the background vague and loose in shades of green and neutral tones to complement the brilliant reds, oranges and yellows and extreme detail in each of the tulips. The frothy white curtain, minimally worked, rests atop the flowers as if a spring breeze from the open window has whipped it up and gracefully placed it there.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Just as soon as I had sold “Tea for Tulips”, above, another customer was interested. When she discovered it was no longer available, she commissioned me to do one “just for her”, but not too different from the first. One thing she requested was that a Schnauzer be worked into the painting somewhere, one who hadn’t had his ears cropped.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Such a huge variety of flowers in buckets at the market! I visit many farmer’s markets through the summer now that every community seems to have one at least once a week, to purchase what my garden is not producing. All the farmers are local and are small family farms and I enjoy meeting the people who grow my food, and who took the time to pick it and sort it and wash it and pack it the day of the market. This particular farmer had buckets and buckets of flowers and in the light from the sky all the flowers were so vibrant I couldn’t pass them up.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My pink pasture roses are enthusiastically blooming. They are an old-fashioned native rose, brilliant pink but “single”, meaning they have only one row of petals, five in total in that row. Their thorns, a mix of short, medium and long and all needle sharp, line their stems as numerous as salt grains on a pretzel, and I, typically gloveless in every situation, will don gloves when I cut a bouquet to put in the vase by my door. The scent of roses can be cloying and even heavy, but these roses smell light and fresh, like a clean June morning. Unhybrid and totally native, they are as tough as the clay they will grown in. This rose was in the yard when I moved in, and may have been here for decades; in my experience all those old roses were a tough bunch, disappearing under the lawnmower’s blade only to reappear the next year, or sprouting up in an untended yard where they had been long forgotten.

They fall apart rather quickly when cut, but I still do to enjoy them near me. Years ago I did a small quick daily sketch of a bunch of these and my red climbing roses that is one of my favorite still lifes.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I love the cheerful warm yellow of rudbeckia, or black-eyed susans, complete with the little dark-chocolate center. A few rain drops were still falling at the end of the storm when I ran out to photograph these glistening flowers of these rudbeckia in the rain, and sparkling droplets at the tips of the petals. They are one of the native species I have tucked into sunnier spots in my backyard wildlife habitat.

An Old Memory Gift Bag

I adhere a high-quality print of my sketch “An Old Memory” to a medium-size kraft paper gift bag. Bag measures approximately 8″ x 10″ x 3″ deep but may vary slightly. Price includes shipping.

From the first time I received a gift bag with feline artwork on it, I could picture my art on a gift bag. ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I took the photo in 1983, just a few months after I got my first camera and I was only shooting black and white so I could learn how to use the camera. Even though it was black and white film, it was processed in a one-hour development machine intended for color and the black and white ended up sepia, which I really liked better than when I had it printed in black and white. It always looked like an older image and the sepia really reinforces that; it’s from the same era as “A Sunny Room”, and incidentally, the same cat, Kublai.

The holidays are a time for celebration as well as a time for reflection and remembering.

An Old Memory

Cut-paper snowflakes taped
to a wavy glass window reflecting
the big front porch from an apartment I lived in long ago,
and a cat I will always remember from when he and I were very young,
just beginning,
me just getting to know my camera, and my art;
how did I capture a perfectly blended image to reflect those times?

Poem © 2009 Bernadette E. Kazmarski

I also offer this design as a holiday card.

Sophie Gets a Look at Herself Gift Bags

I adhere a high-quality print of my sketch “Sophie Keeps an Eye on Things” to a medium-size paper gift bag. Bag measures approximately 8″ x 10″ x 3″ deep but may vary slightly. Price includes shipping.

From the first time I received a gift bag with feline artwork on it, I could picture my art on a gift bag. ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sophie was a little goofy, and did at one time look at herself in a glass ornament on the tree…for my holiday card in 1999 I decided to illustrate that memory in a quick little sketch.

Whether or not Sophie thinks she is all nose with tiny eyes and ears or that every ornament has her image on it, I don’t know, but she certainly looked a little disconcerted at encountering her reflection in this way. In any case, she provided the inspiration for a bright, cheerful piece of holiday artwork!

I also offer this design as a holiday card.

Daily Sketches Gift Bags

I adhere a high-quality print of my sketch to a medium-size paper gift bag. Bag measures approximately 8″ x 10″ x 3″ deep but may vary slightly. Price includes shipping.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I chose a variety of my daily sketches that worked well as gift bag artwork in content, shape and size, and which also coordinated with the bags I had on hand. No doubt this collection will change and increase over time.

You can find each of these sketches elsewhere on this site; search for the title to find them as prints, greeting cards or on other gift items.

DAILY SKETCHES

I endeavor to do at least a small sketch each day as a warm-up to my aesthetic senses, so I have a small pouch of art materials and a few various sized sketchbooks available in the house and out. Usually, these are done in pencil, my first and favorite medium, though sometimes it’s charcoal, ink, colored pencil, ink and brush, whatever strikes my fancy at the moment, the greatest challenge to keep it quick and not get caught up in details, let the idea flow onto the paper.

Most often, the subjects are my cats because they are such willing models, though sometimes I’ll also wander afield, literally, and sketch in my yard or anywhere I go for errands. Medium and especially style vary just so I get a chance to do something new.

Every once in a while, they are meant for framing, and I’ve designed a series of notecards, notepaper and notepads using other daily sketches (see my notecards section). Often I use them as illustrations for graphics projects I’m designing.

Fine Art Gift Bags

I adhere a high-quality print of my artwork to a medium-size paper gift bag. Bag measures approximately 8″ x 10″ x 3″ deep but may vary slightly. Price includes shipping.

From the first time I received a gift bag with feline artwork on it, I could picture my art on a gift bag.

I chose a variety of my fine art paintings that worked well as gift bag artwork in content, shape and size, and which also coordinated with the bags I had on hand. No doubt this collection will change and increase over time.

You can find each of these paintings elsewhere on this site; search for the title to find them as prints, greeting cards or on other gift items.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“Inscrutable Patterns” began as an ink sketch of one of my cats, which I then took into my graphics program to colorize the art and lay out the pattern. They all look at me like this, but this is more patterned after Jelly Bean, who sat by the window atop a box so that his face and front body was entirely in a deep shadow. Resting, his eyes are slits, and sometimes he simply closes them and takes a nap, but sitting up. I looked at him and thought, “Inscrutable”, as his expression seemed to be, and actually was since I really had no idea what he might be thinking. Mewsette on the Afghan gift bag, red.

I adhere a high-quality print of Mewsette on the Afghan to a medium-size colored paper gift bag. Bag measures approximately 8″ x 10″ x 3″ deep but may vary slightly. Price includes shipping.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Mewsette nearly blends in with the afghan.

I’ll admit, this took a little longer than the usual 15 minutes maximum. I’ve been holding off the sketches with this afghan just because I knew they’d be time-consuming for part of the charm is the detail of all the colors. Today I could not pass up pretty Mewsette quietly napping on the afghan, especially when she opened her big yellow eyes. I drew the basic sketch in black, then later filled in the colors with every marker I have in the house. This afghan is more muted than this sketch shows, but I like the bright colors too.

I love that old afghan. My mother crocheted it years ago from a 1944 pattern book out of scraps of wool yarn. Each granny square is made of four rows, each a different color, with one last row of black; when the squares are sewn together there are two rows of black between each color set which gives it this stained-glass effect.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Look a little closer at those markings…what do you see?

For my holiday card in 1997, I was puzzling out yet another way to say “Peace on Earth”. I saw an illustration that had each hemisphere of a globe on either side of a Christmas tree ornament, and thought the idea of using the globe was clever.

Creating portraits of spotted dogs and spotted cats at the time, something in my brain put it all together for me. While I regularly create linoleum block prints, I decided to draw this one out instead of cutting it! Don’t know why…probably the time factor as I’m often behind the clock when it comes to making cards for the holidays. So it’s an ink drawing with the text added later in my graphic design program.

You can find this art as a greeting card too.

Snowy Morning Gift Bag

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

We had some snow that morning. The kittens had only seen snow in the air once before, and were fascinated.

This is Bella on my bedroom windowsill first thing in the morning, watching the air thick with flurries, and no doubt birds too, in the maple tree outside the bedroom window. It is also many other cats through the years as well as I’ve awakened and watched them utterly immersed in whatever was happening right outside the window. The little cat, the big window, it seems to be a theme.

When I woke up and saw Bella fascinated by the early snow squall, this is what I saw, and I also remember that without someone to rescue her she’d be out there, she might be trying to feed herself and kittens like Mimi did, she might not even have survived, instead of sitting safe inside a big window in a warm house with her current career as an artist’s model. It’s not just what I see that’s inspiring, it’s what I know too.

This painting won a Muse Medallion for Illustration in the 2015 Cat Writers’ Association Annual Communications Contest.

You can find this art as a print too.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

We don’t really celebrate any one tradition for the winter holidays, but we enjoy sharing traditions of all our friends. I had created the six-pointed star as part of an invitation I designed for a non-denominational holiday musical celebration a few years ago. It could have been that, while I worked on that design on my computer, one or more young black cats found it intensely interesting against the black background of the design and an idea was born, a universal message for the season, with cats. It wasn’t the one above at first, but another one, below, adapted from remembering the Four when they were kittens looking out the big window at the birds and the snow, then it was night and there was a star…

Star of Kittens holiday card.

I really like this design, and it was just what I’d envisioned. But there was another, more serious design developing in there. Soon I was looking for the purr-fect silhouette. You’ve seen me use daily sketches for new designs for merchandise, but I’ve also used daily photos. I remembered  a feline silhouette from a photo of Mr. Sunshine looking up at a moth in the pendant lamp that I used for my annual Independence Day post Oooh! Aaah! I wanted to be certain to capture every single hair and whisker of that silhouette—it was very fun and worth every minute to isolate all those furs and whiskers to that his silhouette would look authentic.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

If you’re going to stand out in a crowd, do it well.

Just one white crocus among all the purples in my neighbor’s little garden. It appeared on its own a few years ago—this clump of crocuses were all purple for years, and I have the photos to prove it because I’ve photographed them just about every year even though the photos look pretty much the same. Some people want to remove it because it breaks up the perfection of purple, plant it somewhere else on its own, but this is where it was meant to be. Some things are like that.

I also offer this as a photo print in Gardens and Wildflowers.

You’ll also find a few of these photos in my “Gardens and Wildflowers” photo gallery if you’d like a print.

I adhere a high-quality print of my photo “The Last Garden” to a medium-size paper gift bag. Bag measures approximately 8″ x 10″ x 3″ deep but may vary slightly. Price includes shipping.

The Last Garden Gift Bag

Ruby and orange zinnias still bloom in October.

You’ll also find a few of these photos in my “Gardens and Wildflowers” photo gallery if you’d like a print.
