Hot off the Worktable: Ornaments!

Ornaments!

Ornaments!

Today’s project as I work my way toward the holidays—ornaments! “Dusk in the Woods” and “Star of Wonder” are on thin 4″ polymer clay disks, one handpainted and one with an image transfer, ready with hanging hooks for decoration this holiday season. These are another idea I’ve been carrying around for quite some time, including one I’ve been trying to get to work since July.

Each one is made a little differently.

“Star of Wonder” is handpainted onto the disk I made of 1/8″ polymer clay, the star in a pearlescent white, the background and cat in matte blue. I had wanted a metallic blue polymer clay for the background, but the color just wasn’t right and no amount of staring at it in the store would make it work. Not only that, there wasn’t a medium blue that matched what I needed either, so I just went back to white clay and went from there. I debated adding the thin glitter glaze to this, but I really think it would be distracting. I may decide to stencil it instead of handpainting, we’ll see.

Dusk in the Woods

“Dusk in the Woods” is made by a technique I’ve been trying to get to work since July, and it finally did! The actual art is transferred onto the clay as it bakes using an iron-on for fabrics. After many experiments with different polymer clay brands and iron-ons I finally found the perfect combination—and that’s exciting not only for these ornaments but for many other things, like tiles and pins and coasters. Below is a tile I also made today just to test how it worked on other art.

Right now they always end up with rough edges because, even weighted down, the paper just doesn’t stay adhered to the edges. I kind of like that, but I may work out a way to make a larger ornament and trim off those rough edges as I did with the tile above.

The “Dusk in the Woods” ornament is finished with a thin glaze of iridescent glitter so that it looks like falling snow when it moves, and I really like the way it works out. When I make this as a tile or coaster later, though, I think I’ll appreciated Dusk in the Woods in its original scene.

PURCHASE ORNAMENTS

Right now I only have a few of each one, but I am set up to make more.
