Typically when I look out my back door I see my big vegetable garden, lots of perennial flowers and wildflowers, and my everlasting pink and red geraniums, some of which are 15 years old and saved in the basement each winter. In 2016, after my wild black cherry tree fell the year before and smashed half of my back yard, and neighbors’ trees fell on my fences in years before that, my yard was tall with jewelweed and pokeberries. That will be good for the soil, but I missed my gardens.

I always have a few pots of herbs on the deck and a few geraniums are on the steps. Last year that was all I had, but it was what I saw when I look out the back door, the bright red and pink, the bright light green parsley alight with mid-day sunlight in the blue Chinese pot, and the trees out in the yard. I smiled when I looked at it, and the bright colors and complex greens also made me want to paint it.

When I painted this I was working on my “spatters”— I decided this would be a good painting to see what spattering with various brushes could to with the background. I think they worked pretty well here. I also piled paint up in the upper left where it’s dark, and let it spill and move over the paper, then let it dry to form the leaves in the trees. I like it.

Here is the cropped version.

An artist in one of the groups I post in said she could feel the “absolute joy” in this painting. Yes, the exuberance of nature on a beautiful summer day, and my joy at even just a little bit of life and color to be inspired by.
