Landscape Artwork

The landscape of Western Pennsylvania is a constant inspiration to me. Many of these works were done “en plein air”, although trying to catch the right place at the right time with weather conditions and daily work can be a real trick, so a fair number were done from photographs.

I work most often in pastel, especially in the field, although I occasionally work in watercolor from photographs. In addition, I work in pencil and charcoal, working in extreme detail when at home with photographs, and just doing quick “daily sketches”.

Most works are available in their original, but I also offer a variety prints on paper or canvas and notecards of quite a few.

It’s time for another painting challenge, and I’m ready. My recent trip to Savannah and to see the eclipse inspired a lot of paintings, as have my daily photos and even putting my recent Panhandle Trail exhibit together. In November I’ll have another exhibit of paintings of Carnegie. I have portraits to finish. Time to get the studio time back. I don’t think I’ll do a painting every day, but every other day, as I did in January, would be great.

This was painted from a photo I took in the Savannah Wildlife Refuge. If you are familiar with my paintings you’ll know I love road paintings, and a simple long dirt road through a wildlife refuge is totally entrancing for me along with all those textures and shades of green things all around, and it’s so FLAT. I’m from Western Pennsylvania where things need to be made flat. I took this photo because the road curved through a small stand of live oaks, and you can see the shadows of the trees under the arch along with the light at the end. The simple shapes of the grass, reeds, brush and trees in the distance under that big blue sky graced with clouds that looked too tired under the sun was one image I knew I’d paint.

I used various soft and hard pastels on a self-prepared board. You can see a vertical texture and I tried to both use that and mask it. The panel was an Ampersand pastel panel on which I’d done an illustration that was changed so many times that there was no surface tooth left. I pulled all the pastel off it, sanded it, and brushed it with two coats Golden translucent pastel ground, all brush strokes in one direction. I think it worked out okay.

Prints up to 16″ x 20″ are shipped flat in a rigid envelope. Larger prints are shipped rolled in a mailing tube unless otherwise requested; flat shipping is an extra cost because it’s oversized.

GICLEE PRINTS

The giclees are printed on acid-free hot press art paper for a smooth matte finish using archival inks. Giclee is the highest quality print available because the technique uses a dozen or more ink ports to capture all the nuances of the original painting, including details of the texture, far more sensitive than any other printing medium. Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original. Digital prints are only available up to 11″ x 17″ and some of the prints are cropped to fit standard mat and frame sizes.

Digital prints have at least 1/2″ around the edges depending on the size of the print. All are countersigned by me.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered because I have limited storage space. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting.

FRAMED PRINTS

I do all my own framing and can custom frame a print for you. Please ask.

I participated in Leslie Saeta’s annual “30 in 30” painting challenge in January 2017. This was my painting for day 4.

I just love a row of houses in the sun. This street dead ends at the top of the bank of Chartiers Creek. The houses have been there over a century, flooded several times, seen lots of people moving through watching life with their blank window eyes. Now in brilliant winter sun they stand like old friends, the long shadows of the houses and buildings across the street reaching to touch them as the sun drops toward the horizon.

This was painted on a self-prepared board.

This painting is one of those sweet familiar ones I’ve been wanting to paint for years: an early summer morning, hazy and bright, seen from my deck or through my kitchen window, geraniums in full flower, trees overlapping and heavy with dewy leaves, quiet and still.

It’s painted in soft pastel on another self-prepared board.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting was included in 2016: Sun Shadow Ice & Snow, Seasons on the Panhandle Trail. Autumn along the trail is overwhelming with all the colors in the mix of trees and brush in the woods and on the hills. I took this photo years ago and finally painted it. So rich in detail, sun and colorful shadows, this old road leading off the trail into the woods made me want to explore it—so I did, in pastel.

SHIPPING

Shipping within the US is included in all the prices listed. All shipping is via Priority Mail. Prints are shipped flat in a rigid envelope. Canvases are shipped in a box to fit with padding. Since this original is small it is also shipped in a box with extra padding.

FRAMED ORIGINAL

The vintage frame is 22″ x 28″ solid maple with a gold foil finish on the decorative carving on the inside edge. The mat is 4″ wide, tan faux leather texture.

It’s actually the sunset reflected on the eastern horizon, but I guess it could be the western sky as well. It’s from memory, not from life or from a photo, but it’s something I visualized when I’d looked at the horizon at sunset out my back window, a clear cold cloudless sky and deep shadow in the valley below, and imagined it like two distinct color blocks, like a Rothko composition. It’s not copying Rothko, only inspired by studying his paintings and having read writings and heard interviews by his son. This is actually a figurative landscape, though to some it may appear abstract. I intend to work my way back to abstraction at some point.

It’s actually the steeple of the former Carnegie Presbyterian Church on Washington Avenue, seen from the West Lawn at Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall. At any other time of the year, or even in another year, I would have missed it because the trees would have been significantly different. I loved reading the variations on the Arthurian legends and all the anachronistic fantasy stories related to and inspired by the legends, so I was probably predisposed to see this view with this interpretation.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting may look like a recent Carnegie scene but it goes way back, 34 years to be exact. I was just out of college and painted it long before I’d decided to devote  part of my career to art, and I marvel that I created this when I did, in 1983.

This was a scene I saw each day because I walked up and down that hill to catch my bus and then come home to the apartment I rented. I remember seeing this on many September mornings, the bright sun streaming over the neighborhoods to filter through the trees that lined Beechwood, and then shining fully on the scene beyond with that particular blue September sky. It’s painted in acrylic paint with ink detailing on watercolor paper. I have no idea where I came up with that combination, but I remember feeling pretty awkward with the acrylics, and also the need to outline everything in black in those days because it didn’t look finished until I did, and wondering when I’d get over it.

I decided to give it to my mother as a gift for Christmas a few years later, that view of Carnegie where she’d grown up and gone to high school and walked that street many times. When she moved from her home to assisted living the painting moved with her until she had no wall space for it. When I took it back I realized how much I like it and studied the “technique” I had at that time. Often experimentation is very expressive, and it reminded me to never stop myself from experimenting for fear something “wouldn’t work”. Things always work, one way or another.

I decided to enter it into the exhibit Carnegie Painted one year, and though I’d painted it year before have always considered it part of my Carnegie collection, My Home Town.

Digital prints are only available up to 11″ x 17″ and some of the prints are cropped to fit standard mat and frame sizes.

Digital prints have at least 1/2″ around the edges depending on the size of the print. All are countersigned by me.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered because I have limited storage space. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting. This canvas mirrors the edges of the image around the sides.

FRAMED PRINTS

I do all my own framing and can custom frame a print for you. Please ask.

The good old traditional parade on the good old traditional Main Street, in my home town of Carnegie, PA. I am not a big fan of parades but my mother loved them, so every year until the year before she died I set us up on Main Street regardless of the weather and we cheered along the high school marching bands and local dignitaries and fire companies and reenactors marching in the parade. Going out for an ice cream sundae afterward capped it off.

Each year our community held an art exhibit called “Carnegie Painted” for 2-D art depicting images of Carnegie; this was one of my entries in 2008, sketched from photos I had taken of the parade. Instead of color I decided to render it in pencil, in a style reminiscent of World War II cartoons. Pencil is so expressive, and it really reduces lines down to just what they need to be to get the point across, and this illustration style is almost impressionistic in its quality of line and level of detail.

Also, my father was a veteran of WWII, and my mother graduated high school and began her life during the war years—she considered it “her time”. I always felt as if I’d lived then with all the stories and memories. As my mother was growing older and finding and reading through my father’s service papers I actually came to feel closer to that time. This drawing in this style was a memory of that parade, of my mother, my father and a lot of other things combined. It all connects to a story I’m writing.

I sold the original, but have prints and notecards of it in various sizes. This sketch is also part of the gallery My Home Town.

I participated in Leslie Saeta’s annual “30 in 30” painting challenge in January 2017. This was my painting for day 3.

For me, almost any spot along winding, hilly back roads through fields with old trees and fence posts is a worthy spot for painting. This is one of many I liked best of the group I’ve been taking over the years for various reasons. The tree in the center is the main subject if you ask me, and I like the way it owns the road. The road itself leads straight into the scene, unlike most of my road sketches where the roads have bends. The field on the left gently reaches up and up and up out of the shadow in the left corner. That fluffy summer sky is just so pretty, just enough cloud, just enough blue. It’s a scene that always makes me feel very expansive, positive, wanting to run to the top of the hill as I did when I was a child when I saw such a place. The whole scene has a very simple color palette, and where I like to add complementary colors to most of my paintings to liven up the shadows and highlights, I wanted to maintain the scene’s simple, literal sense. A summer day is very uncomplicated.

It’s painted in soft pastel on a self-prepared board. Where I had added the pastel grounds smoothly on other boards, I stippled it on this one intending to use it for a scene that had fine details, like the leaves on the trees. I used that texture to build the textures all over the painting.

Summer

“Summer” is an abandoned farm field on a high ridge which I passed regularly on the way to work each morning for six years, seen right after an early morning storm. I would reach this portion of my drive and pause to look at this field with the morning unfolding above it, different each day, take a deep breath, and go on. The site was developed a few years later, but I still remember that each time I pass by it, even now.

Summer is one of a quartet of paintings, “The Four Seasons”, commissioned to fit a special handmade frame. Scroll down to read about the creation of “The Four Seasons”.

The painting is 23″ x 16″, matted with a deep forest green watered silk acid-free mat edged with a dull gold rounded fillet, framed in a 2″ wood frame with two tones of antique silver edged with antique gold, outside edge finished in deep cherry mahogany.

About “The Four Seasons”

Years ago a patron of a gallery in Carnegie where I hung my artwork asked me to paint four images for a very special frame she had.

The frame had been designed and handmade in wood by her father-in-law, was long and narrow, and had four openings, each 12″ high by 24″ wide. Each opening had its own piece of glass, and between each opening was a 1/2″ slat of wood as a divider. The outside border of the frame was 2″ wide and flat with hand carved figures which I believe were leaves, like a vine. Overall it had a warm and rustic appearance.

The frame came apart in the center so that there were two panels in each half, and art and glass slid in and out through this opening. The area for the artwork was barely deep enough for a piece of drawing paper, so he must have intended it for photos when he designed it. The frame locked together in the back so that the two halves held together and hung on the wall without sagging.

She was interested in pastel drawings on paper, which were a good choice for this since even flat painting panels would not have fit.

As soon as she described the frame to me I thought of painting the four seasons, in part because of the four sections of the frame, and it’s also a theme I enjoy here in Western Pennsylvania. The customer would enjoy it too, because I’d been to her house and large picture windows were placed to enjoy the landscape from all angles, and the view of the countryside was something she always mentioned.

So I collected reference photos from my rambles for each of the seasons, thinking purely of landscapes. Skies are one of my favorite daily studies, no matter the season; I could watch skies forever, the clouds moving, the changing light. Choosing the right moment of sky to paint into a landscape is a very serious choice for me, as you’ll see in looking at all four paintings in this series.

But she loved white cats and had actually purchased my painting “A Warm Bath” featuring my Angora cat Sally in a bath in morning sun at my side window, and asked me to add a white cat in somewhere since she’d given that painting as a gift. I really considered the best way to include a cat in the first panel, “Spring”. The scenes of the landscapes were typical of landscape paintings, showing the middle and far distance, where a cat would be hard to spot. For the landscape itself I remembered the layout of her yard and acreage, and collected some of my favorite photos of spring blooming garden.

But I remembered one of her picture windows and a countertop that extended partway in front of it and decided what I’d do. I had taken several reference photos of Sally having a good bath in front of that window for “A Warm Bath” and chose a more upright posture where she appeared to be looking out the window. The cat looking out the window in the first painting would also lend the idea that you were looking out the window at all the landscapes.

In this painting of spring I chose a misty moment in early morning, it’s rained overnight, all is covered with raindrops and the mist is still rising, the clouds parting.

While “Spring” is based on the customer’s property, the other three are not only treasured landscapes but also have emotional ties to the cats in my life.

“Autumn” is a hay field with a rambling little stream and scrubby trees as autumn rain clouds roll in which I had photographed along one of the back roads I enjoyed. She had an old farm pond on her property and though her land was hilly I wanted to include a pond somehow.

And “Winter” is a winter view of the friend’s family farm that I visited when I began painting en plein air. I found this frozen, still sunset absolutely beautiful, the quiet of the empty fields and big open sky, the sound of the wind.

The one interesting part of this quartet is something I did not plan at all, but happened as I put the paintings together. If you let your eye run from one to the next you’ll notice that the horizon line is consistent from one to the next, and the time of day is actually progressive with “Spring” being very early morning, “Summer” about noon, “Autumn” mid afternoon, and “Winter” at sunset. When I saw this developing as I planned the paintings I found I could actually match up the horizon lines, but the times of day were part of the scenes I’d chosen. I had first considered actually having the seasons and times of day blend into one another, but decided the frame really wouldn’t accommodate that convincingly, instead letting the viewer’s eye fill in the connections.

Because the paintings were larger and difficult to photograph for a film camera with a standard size lens, my photos from this time were not consistently good enough to reproduce so only two are available. One of these days she and I will get together so I can take good updated photographs of all four seasons.

Last February I caught a surprise winter sunset and shared photos in “I Chased A Sunset”.

…and it disappeared over the edge
and took a piece of my soul with it.

Really, on the way home from a quick errand to a shopping center I encountered a stunning winter sunset just beginning to color and decided to take a detour through a local park to see it in progress. All I had was my smartphone which doesn’t handle colors and contrasts at all well, but decided I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. The sunset had me racing over acres of the park which is on a ridge over a valley, just the perfect setting to watch the sun drop below the far horizon with both trees as a foreground, and then nothing but sky.

I love the images as photos in all their native color and intricacy, but I’ve also wanted to paint a few. I didn’t want to create a masterpiece right now this minute and decided on a simple theme. I used my basic box of pastel pieces, the one I take out in the field for quick sketches so if they all get dumped in a creek it’s kind of okay, in part because I wanted that authentic feel of using a limited palette. Also last year I purchased a number of pastel grounds when I couldn’t purchase my regular pastel paper and painted them on 8″ x 11″ Richeson hardboard panels, which had been the wrong size for a project but perfect for this. The ground for this panel was Golden Fine Pumice in a clear gel, and it seems two coats of the stuff is a good base for the mix of pastels I have in this box—from the softest melt-in-your-fingers to hard Nupastels.

This simple composition, land, sky, bare tree, was made challenging by all the color not only in the sky but in the shadowed ground, and the tiny lights of the world preparing for night.

How many sunsets have shone on this site in Carnegie, the angled sun shining nearly horizontally on the cliff about the creek. Currently, it’s Ross Colonial Cemetery, named so for the Ross family of settlers around the time of the Revolutionary War, but the site has been a lookout for millennia as one can stand on the cliff’s edge and see most of the valley containing Carnegie and the creek as it enters and leaves town. My mother told me her brothers and thers found Native American artifacts in this area.

GICLEE PRINTS

The giclees are printed on acid-free hot press art paper for a smooth matte finish using archival inks. Giclee is the highest quality print available because the technique uses a dozen or more ink ports to capture all the nuances of the original painting, including details of the texture, far more sensitive than any other printing medium. Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original. Digital prints are only available up to 11″ x 17″ and some of the prints are cropped to fit standard mat and frame sizes.

Digital prints have at least 1/2″ around the edges depending on the size of the print. All are countersigned by me.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered because I have limited storage space. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting. This canvas mirrors the edges of the image around the sides.

FRAMED PRINTS

I do all my own framing and can custom frame a print for you. Please ask.

Sometimes the moon follows the sun over the edge, especially as it did this summer evening after storms cleared. The lower sky was layered with clouds in all colors, wispy, puffy blended as if I’d put my finger up there and moved the pigments around. the half moon had risen earlier in the day and was just behind the sun, setting only about an hour later, but brilliant way up in the sky, above most clouds, in that deeper blue canopy.

I used various soft and hard pastels on a self-prepared board; on this board I used Colourfix Fine Blue Pastel Ground. I did sand it between coats and afterward, but I still ended up with pock marks in the surface which you can see right above where the clouds stop, but no matter. The one detail that’s a little more important is that my scanner isn’t quite capturing my paintings as usual, and this is actually missing a lot of coral shades, and also lots of little blending and layering among the clouds. I will see how a photo works tomorrow in daylight.

I participated in Leslie Saeta’s annual “30 in 30” painting challenge in January 2017. This was my painting for day 5.

I took this photo a few years ago from an overpass and always wanted to sketch it in charcoal. The graceful curve of the tracks in any season, because I admire it all the time, is an inspiration to create. In the starkness of the snowy day, the minimized palette honestly black and white even in a photo, the trees rising straight up all around, marching up the steep hill toward the sky and starting down into the ravine on the other side, has been another inspiration I’ve wanted to sketch. We had a nice snow and when I drove past this spot today I decided now was the time to do it.

I participated in Leslie Saeta’s annual “30 in 30” painting challenge in January 2017. This was my painting for day 16.

This panting is named for the famous poem by Robert Frost, Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening, which was my first thought when I walked around a bend in the trail to see this alley in the woods filled with deep snow. I’d been hiking around Kane’s Woods with a friend after a heavy snow to get as many snow photos as I could, knowing I probably wouldn’t stop to paint. Late in the afternoon in early January the light was fading but those wonderful dusky shades were filling the white and gray of the snowy surrounding.

How do you capture the bare trees with snow without drawing each twig and fluff of snow?

When I prepared a dozen 8 x 12 hardboard panels with pastel grounds I made each different, and some with texture that I would use as part of the art. To this board I applied white acrylic ground with marble dusk mixed in and rolled it with a small flocked roller. The ground mixture on the hard surface puckered and formed a textured surface.

The texture was just deep enough for me to work pastel down into the texture, then scrape other pastels over the surface of the texture to achieve the shaded appearance in the snow itself, and I also used it to scrape the darker warm gray pastel of the tree trunks over the surface in the wooded area to get the effect of the many tiny twigs piled with snow. I also used it to get the effect of the snow on the vertical trunks where it settled on the bark.

This land was a portion of land involved in the Whiskey Rebellion in Scott Township, west of Pittsburgh, in Western Pennsylvania. It’s also a trail I walked on as a child, long before it was a “trail” on conservation lands. I’m glad to be a member of the Scott Conservancy and be a part of conserving this land.

I took this photo in 2009. It’s about time I painted it.

I participated in Leslie Saeta’s annual “30 in 30” painting challenge in January 2017. This was my painting for day 17.

It’s sweet to study the buildings in an old small town where they rarely rise above four stories tall. I like to look at rooftops and caught this view while walking down a hill until I was at just rooftop level at just the right time of day, late afternoon, as the sun was nearing the horizon and the light became golden and touched just the tops of the buildings with shadows cast by other buildings. This is seen from the backs of the buildings, and all red brick, almost a monochromatic color scheme.

I managed to capture the sun glinting off the blue dome and crosses of the Russian Orthodox church but couldn’t line up the gilded dome and crosses of the Ukrainian Orthodox church right next door. No matter where you look in this town you see crosses against the sky because there is a church on practically every corner, but none as fine as the Orthodox churches standing almost side by side.

I participated in Leslie Saeta’s annual “30 in 30” painting challenge in January 2017. This was my painting for day 20.

The day was gray, misty and quiet, just the day to spot a large crow perched atop a dead tree. I was transfixed by its stillness, unmoving, against the gray sky, took a photo, and then it crouched down, lifted its wings and lifted itself heavily from the tree, moving upward and away slowly, on deep, slow flaps of its wings. I left a large expanse of gray because, while perched in the tree the a closeup worked well, once it was airborne the huge gray sky was part of the composition.

I participated in Leslie Saeta’s annual “30 in 30” painting challenge in January 2017. This is my painting for day 22.

I’m still tinkering with the title for this one because it’s also one of my Main Street paintings and I want to get “Main Street” in here somewhere. I have no idea when I took the photo but I know I’ve been holding on to this one for a while. I love rainy dark streets with reflections on the wet pavement, and streetlights shining up the faces of buildings. This one, however, was all about that violet sky, the clouds breaking apart after the sun had set, leaving a red glow on the clouds.

Digital prints are only available up to 11″ x 17″ and some of the prints are cropped to fit standard mat and frame sizes.

Digital prints have at least 1/2″ around the edges depending on the size of the print. All are countersigned by me.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered because I have limited storage space. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting. This canvas mirrors the edges of the image around the sides.

I love quiet little street scenes, and living in a small town they aren’t difficult to find. I took the reference photo for this early on a Saturday morning in early September 2015. The day was already hot, still holding the heat of August, and a bit of a mist had risen when the sun came up; the light was warm and languid, hazy and bluish in the distance. There were people around aside from me—some of the shadows on the sidewalk are from cars—so it was just a momentary empty sidewalk. I remember paying more attention to the two flags slowly waving back and forth on the slight morning breeze so who would notice the people?

I used all Sennelier pastels on this self-prepared board because the surface is so heavily textured but it didn’t hold the pastel very well, and it turned out this had only gesso and no grit or pastel ground. I’d chosen to use this board because of its texture and knowing it could add its own level of detail in many areas of the painting. I was a little disappointed in how it performed, but I always end up liking how it turned out. I stippled the surface with a sponge, I think, and it has an interesting grainy texture. We all have to challenge ourselves sometimes.

This is a view of the Allegheny River in Western Pennsylvania, seen from Tarentum. I took a quick walk through the park along the river on a beautiful autumn day and took as many photos as I could. The hill is very high and steep behind this row of trees and otherwise the hill comes down to the bank of the river, but for this short stretch the row of trees was separated from the hill, deep in bluish shadow, while the trees caught the late afternoon sunlight.

I knew I wanted to keep this loose, just capturing the visual of the reflection and the contrast with the bright sunlight, bright leaves, and dark hillside.

I had intended to use navy blue paper for this painting because of the bluish cast of autumn, but I had no navy blue left in the pad of paper, so I used black. I used Strathmore charcoal paper, which is lightweight and has a finer texture than the other black pastel paper I’ve used. When paper is made the pulp is poured into a mold that has a screen in the bottom of it. The paper pulp is spread on the screen, then pressed into it with a piece of heavy felt. As it dries the paper holds the screen pattern on one side but is relatively smooth on the back. I considered using the “felt” side, which has only a slight screen texture, but then decided I wanted to use the texture to build the detail in the trees.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
That “blue time of day”…a quick walk in the woods after a heavy snowfall as clouds parted and the sun set on the distant horizon, bare trees like sentinels. This time of day always carries a certain melancholy for me, as if a deep instinctive part of me realizes the sun is about to leave and may not come back. The moment stands in all its silent beauty along Robinson Run in Collier Township, on a trail in the woods running parallel to the Panhandle Trail.

I didn’t have my art materials with me when I saw this, but planned to return to do at least a portion of it under similar conditions. That time of day the light changes so quickly, but I could set up and be prepared for the moment I wanted. Alas, we had no appreciable snow for two years and this image was really begging to be painted—I was visualizing it daily and even dreaming about it, which is how I know a painting really needs to be done. I began with my photos, then put them away and spent the hours remembering that moment, the sound, the smell, the cold…

Most important was the color of the snow at that time of day, difficult to achieve in a painting because so much of that color depends on the reflected light from the sky, difficult to reproduce in a two-dimensional painting. I also wanted to capture the stillness of the woods in the large expanse of unbroken snow at the bottom, as all the winter wildlife had taken cover before the snow and still stayed protected, leaving only the constant, comforting gurgling of the water as it flowed past, shallow water rippling over a rocky stream bed.

This piece was the signature painting at my first annual poetry reading and fine art show at Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall, Paths I Have Walked. The theme was, literally, the paths I’ve walked all over this valley since childhood, and the inspiration they’ve given me. Visit the page to see more artwork and read the poetry from that reading.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I painted “Deserted Cottages” en plein air at a deserted campground in North East along Lake Erie. It was just a quick thing at the end of the day because the sun was going down and the light was changing fast, but I’d been painting all day and I was well warmed up. I quickly blocked in the buildings with just a few simple shapes and colors and their traceries of shadows, then the trees and grass, trying to catch the fluttering effect of the leaves in the wind allowing chunks of sky to show through, the tree trunks simplified and in high light-dark contrast, the blank expression of the boarded windows. I was pleased with the outcome, yet something was strangely familiar.

Six years later I put my mother’s house up for sale as she had moved to personal care, and took down her collection of cardboard art in plastic frames that I’d studied in depth growing up. It may not have been expensive, but there was a lot of it, in every room, including the basement. I particularly remembered the one long narrow painting with the signature J.E. Warfield because I liked the way the trees were leafy, not solid, and opened to the sky, the shadows traced across the ground and the buildings were very simple; after studying it as a child I felt that I could do that. Again, something was familiar.

I looked at “Deserted Cottages”, and looked at my cardboard Warfield. The tree trunks, the leaves, the simply buildings, the shadows—there it was! I could clearly see what I’d been aiming for as I’d painted six years before—this painting I’d been studying all my life practically. So it was a cheap cardboard painting stapled into a rickety wood frame—never underestimate the power of any image to inspire and teach! And I haven’t found out a darned thing about J.E. Warfield, but apparently this painting was a popular one judging by all the ones I see being sold as “vintage”. Perhaps it’s also inspired many others out there.

The original of this painting was a pastel, 14″ x 22″ in soft pastel on  2-ply acid-free natural illustration board.

The original is sold but I offer a full size giclee print framed in a plain matte black moulding with a 4″ acid-free white mat, a simple and complimentary combination for my larger paintings featuring the woods in summer, framed size is 22″ x 30″, and a 12″ x 18″ digital framed with a plain matte black moulding with a 2″ acid-free white mat. I also have giclee, digital and and canvas prints.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In early June, on a lovely sunny day just about noon, I was leaving a morning event and on errands traveling the back roads just for fun, knowing this narrow back road had some wonderful spots. Here is one of them, “A Bend in the Road”. We never know what’s around that bend in the road, but the anticipation is what makes the journey exciting.

Then I saw this spot and hit the brakes, gasping with awe at the complicated beauty of nature, the shapes and colors, the sun and shadow, the straight-up height of the trees along the road, arching far overhead, the road bending ahead as if you were to enter a magical place. The trees had finally reached full cover in the woods and all along the trails and I simply could not get enough. I knew I should have carried my art materials! There was no one but me on this road so I took a few photos through my windshield, then put the car in park, shut off the engine with flashers flashing and stood in the middle of the road to take photos, barefoot and listening, smelling, feeling, taking in as much of the spot as I could to remember. The light would change significantly if I were to run home and come back, the moment gone. I also knew I’d see a few other special places today, and vowed if the time came I would return and paint en plein air, but if I could not I would remember it all when I used the photos for a painting.

Often I wait years to do a painting, but in front of everything I’ve worked on for the past month has been this spot and the painting I had visualized, and something a little larger than what I’d been doing lately. Weekends were rainy, so I decided to start from a photo, then finish from memory and referencing the trees outside my windows for the closer details.

This painting is 14″ x 22″ and painted in pastel, mostly Sennelier but also a few Rembrandts and a few others I have on hand for special greens, on 2-ply acid-free natural illustration board. The illustration board with no added finish was an experiment—I am accustomed to working on Wallis sanded pastel, but that’s been difficult to find, and I want to be able to do sketches and paintings on other surfaces. I’m a little disappointed as I couldn’t layer and blend as usual, but really, no one knows that but me to look at it.

“The Swimming Hole” is a pastel painting of my great niece and nephews swimming in Robinson Run, 17″ x 8″ using mixed pastels on Wallis pastel paper.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting was actually visualized during one of the visits with my great nieces and nephews and I knew I’d have to paint it, but this one came about in bits and pieces, and I’ll say it evolved over a period of years. I took a photo during one visit in 2010, but that wasn’t enough information when I decided I wanted to catch the whole scene, not just the kids in the water so I went back to the spot and took more photos on my own, but no one was in the water and it just wasn’t right.

On another visit in 2011 I took lots of reference photos from different angles and even did a small pencil sketch, then individual photos of them in the water, knowing I could never get out my pastels and paint them right there. In my studio the following year I lined up my photos and visualized something pretty close to this but couldn’t get a feel for it from just the photos, so I took my pastels to the trail the next summer, 2013, and laid down the basics of this sketch while there, trying to capture the colors and light and positioning of everything. I didn’t have all the colors with me which I needed and I knew I’d be working on it in my studio to add the kids in the water so I knew I wouldn’t be finishing it right then. I set the sketch in my holding area for more work, and there it sat. I finished it in time for my exhibit “Sun Shadow Ice & Snow: Seasons Along the Panhandle Trail”, the very first one in 2014.

I love painting water, and never give myself enough of a chance to paint it. I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on all the details in the water as well as the direct and reflected light and the colorful shadows on the kids, the way the mid-day sun fell on the water, alighting the top layer of the brush and just touching leaves in the trees with brilliant highlights and creating deep shadows underneath. It’s part of what I think of when I think of summer.

Like the rope swing, how did we kids live through our childhoods jumping into a deep pool of water in a creek off in the woods? For me, unless the water smelled really bad or it was filled with something I didn’t want to touch, I was in it. Water is irresistible to me—if there is water, I at least have my feet in it, if that’s at all possible, and even when it rains I’m out in it for a bit, or standing in the gutter along the street in front of my house letting the rain water run over my feet. I think most kids are like that, and while there are dangers in places like swimming holes, avoiding dangers is not always the best way to deal with them. Instead, learning how to safely use the swimming hole can help teach a life lesson about observation, caution, and when to let go and enjoy things that aren’t manufactured for our use. That’s one of the joys, and lessons, of nature.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This could be anywhere, but Carnegie really is a place where people still use their backyards to hang laundry, including me. And it really is my neighbor’s back yard on a lovely summer morning.

I originally painted this for my home town’s annual art exhibit “Carnegie Painted”. It was one of the very first acrylic works I’d painted since high school, but I could see the colors, see the canvas, see the texture of the paint and off I went. Interestingly enough, this is a small portion of a larger painting. There was a neat old barn of a garage behind it, but I just couldn’t work out the colors right but I loved the laundry, so I cut this out of the panel and framed it.

The original was sold but that summer morning lives on, available as this print and in the gallery “My Home Town” as a note card on my website.

The coldest, frostiest mornings always seem to come in January, right after all the warmth and color of the holiday season. I painted this in January 2012, standing at my window to sketch the basics but finishing from a photo, the light so fleeting, but I look at this view each day and know the details in all seasons. This morning’s hazy frosty look with the valley in shadow but the bright sky was very inspiring. I decided to finally do this sketch that I’ve been visualizing for years.

Not just the colors of a snowy, frigid morning, but the steam rising from all the chimneys were part of the inspiration. I’m not sure why, but seeing the steam rise over the neighborhoods and town on a frosty morning has always had a sense of both melancholy and security for me. As I watched the sun rise and the day grow light, photographing as it went, it seemed everyone’s furnace turned on at the same time and I knew I had to paint this scene.

The four houses across from me I’ve sketched a number of times before, but in this case I’ve also included what is Main Street in Carnegie off to the left, the little collection of square-cornered things are the buildings there with steam rising just as well.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

It isn’t always eternal summer on the trail, though memories might make us think so. Winter is my favorite season to paint. I love the subtleties of color and shape with snow in the air and on the ground, and on the trail I am often all alone with the quiet of a winter day, or a gentle snowfall.

In this case, I was glad for the time alone and quiet, and my art materials. This is from several years ago, one of the sketches I’d actually done in the front seat of my car during a late winter ice and snow storm, with a personal connection. I’d moved my mother to a personal care home in a neighborhood adjacent to the trail and often combined visits to the trail and visits to my mother. She didn’t care at all for trails, but she thought it was pretty cool when I would pull up in front of the home on my bicycle in shorts and a tank top to visit and cool off and eat my lunch on a summer afternoon when all the other daughters were in jogging suits driving minivans. Though my mother suffered from a number of heart and lung conditions she was overall well but weak, though she often suffered from mild dementia; visits could be troubling.

So it was this winter day when I had driven there. The roads were cleared but the trail was not, still, I wanted a dose of nature after my visit and knew of a spot close where I could pull up next to the trail. Not a mark was in the deeply fallen snow, and I decided I would not be the one to leave mine, it was just too perfect. The snow was falling too heavily to work outside my car, so I angled my car just right and sat in my font seat and began a sketch, then decided I should leave before the roads grew worse.

I’d always intended to finish this off, adding some bare trees fading into the distance in the heavy snowfall, but I think there was a reason I stopped at this point, and I think it captures this snowy afternoon and my conversations with my mother as it is.

“Snowfall” was part of my August 2014 exhibit “Sun Shadow Ice & Snow: Seasons Along the Panhandle Trail”. I’ve been visiting the Panhandle Trail for nearly 15 years with my bike and on foot, for exercise and inspiration, more inspiration than exercise, packing in with backpacks of camera equipment and art supplies. I’ve taken thousands of photos along the trail and off in the woods, but I’ve also done a number of sketches while there in pencil, charcoal, pastel and watercolor, and arriving home in my studio to do more from photos.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

From the time I met the paper birch in our front yard I have always been attracted to the delicately detailed white bark of birch trees which seemed to emit its own faint light in any season. Here, in the darkness of the woods, the grouping of white trunks looks like a crowd clustered for discussion, decorated by a maple branch.

The technique was an experiment borne of an off-hand remark from a fellow artist. I had just been experimenting with oil pastels, which at first felt like slippery crayons but soon grew to have their own life as I understood the best ways to achieve the colors and textures I wanted. The artist friend mentioned that you could also work with them using turpentine, either softening the crayons in it or drawing on the paper, then painting turpentine over the oil pastel to blend or spread. I chose to use a combination of these as well as wetting the paper with the turpentine and drawing on that area with the oil pastel. The resulting painting actually looks dimensional, and I know it’s only because of the different textures in the work.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

We have lovely birch groves here in Western Pennsylvania, and this image was reminiscent of one I had encountered while walking through the woods somewhere near me. Not just the white bark, but the contrast with the thin dark twigs and ripples in the bark, is eye-catching, and that autumn display of yellow leaves is nearly blinding. Add a few other leaves to the mix and it becomes a classic autumn scene.

This painting is a real favorite in any color or size; I think viewers react to the details and the colors as I did when I saw the scene and visualized the painting.

The original is quite large, 22″ x 23″, and drawn in a very fine line black ink. I used a technical pen to draw all the details of the birch trees, taking nearly three weeks just to draw the trees. Even though I’d been visualizing it with the color added for the leaves, after all that work I was hesitant to start painting into the drawing for fear I’d mess it up and ruin all that work. But I got over that and began painting in the leaves in all shades of yellow, orange and red.

This painting is entitled “Spring Comes to Bend in the Creek”, 26″ x 19″, done in soft pastel on sanded pastel paper. I offer full-size giclee prints as well as a variety of digital and canvas prints.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I didn’t paint my inspirations of the seasons in any particular order, simply in the order they came to me, though I painted the sketch for this painting, “Spring Thaw”, long before the idea of painting images of my local watershed ever occurred to me. I wanted to capture the wild feeling of this familiar little spot: the spring mist, the tangled branches, the rushing water full of color.

So here is spring as the snowmelt rushes over rocks and gravel and around the bend right here in Carnegie, the sycamores reflecting white in the stark early morning sunlight, a little bit of mist wafting among the trees.

This site looks remote, but it’s a bend in the creek I pass nearly daily in all seasons, especially if I’m on foot on my way to Main Street. Chartiers Creek bends so much, but at this one point it lines up with the morning sun as it rises over Library Hill and both touches the water, rippling over rocks in this area, and the trees, illuminating individual branches.

A hill behind this bend also reflects that light back onto the water at the bend which created an interesting change in color palette across the water.

And the mist is rising as the sun warms the channel, as if sweeping it away.

This painting became the inspiration for my fourth annual poetry reading and art show at Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall, Coming Spring.

I regularly passed the backyard of an old farmhouse near me, and was drawn at first by the forsythia, which was right on the edge of the road as I drove past, then as I slowed down I saw the colorful hanging laundry, always a favorite subject. That hazy spring sunlight with long shadows on the grass, easily distinguished bare lilacs, young leaves on the trees and the white-sided house all combined in a scene that could have been any year in the previous century when everyone hung their laundry outside and that first spring day warm enough to dry it left it smelling so fresh.

This scene and this painting have many levels of memory for me. I passed this house because it was on a corner very near the personal care home where my mother lived for six years, and as I approached, seeing this angle, I would wonder how she would be. I painted it while she still lived there, remembering those drives and thinking of her. Just a few years later the house and grounds were remodeled, changing the corner completely, so that only the painting held those memories.

More than one friend mentioned there was a sense of a spirit there, flitting among the laundry, perhaps someone who had lived there years ago and planted all the shrubs, or perhaps my mother’s memory, dressed in one of her early 1950s tiny-waisted dresses, her dark hair in a pert cut with bangs, bringing in the laundry in the late afternoon.

A friend, who has also purchased other paintings from me, purchased this painting in 2011, and it reminds her of many of the same things as it does me. I’m so happy it’s in a home where all its little quirks are appreciated.

In April , when the ornamental pears bloom, Main Street seems more colorful than usual with big clouds of soft white pear trees all along the street. Even though I painted this in 2003, it carries the memories of Carnegie’s Main Street as I was growing up, visiting the shops and walking here after leaving St. Luke’s School, then, later, working my first full-time job at the Isaly’s.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Suddenly, it’s spring, and most days are really sunny! After this winter it’s totally captivating, and distracting. I can’t go anywhere without seeing possible paintings. Like this one, which I photographed as I didn’t have my sketching materials with me because, for the past couple of months, there hasn’t been anything I wanted to sketch, really. I’ll have to pick up the bag when I leave the house, along with my camera…so much to carry.

In part it was the loveliness of the row of trees, but it was also the deep shadows contrasted with the brilliant sunlight, the vivid green grass and young green leaves. It’s just a simple walk down a sidewalk, changing each minute of the day, and each day of spring, but still so special.

This is sketched in mixed soft pastels on multi-media paper, just enough tooth to hold pastel but no real finish.

The original is framed with a 1-1/2″ white mat in a 9″ x 12″ white molded wood frame.

I followed my little black cat Mimi into my neighbor’s yard, just across the fence line, no fence, from our yard, and looked up at the tall maple tree that I see out my back windows all the time. What a great view, all those colors and shapes and little bits of sky, I guess I’ll sketch it. So here it is.

I took the reference photo for this in 2005. It’s been waiting 12 years to be painted. It was indeed a sunset cruise…down Chartiers Creek on a perfect July evening. Not only the delicate light on the nearly still water and the clear sky gradating up to deep blue, but the curve of the hills on either side. Of all the photos I took for this one scene, this off-center horizon has stayed with me all these years.

About the Artwork

It looks like I’m in the deep woods, but it’s just the line of trees between our back yards; it all depends on the angle you look at it.

When I looked out my kitchen window this morning, above is what I saw. I couldn’t paint it because the light was changing fast at that early hour, so I photographed it and worked on it a little later. I wanted to keep it leafy with a lot of movement, so I used all my pastels on their sides.

This is painted on Colourfix sanded pastel paper with a variety of brands of pastels.

The original is framed n a 9″ x 12″ white molded wood frame with a white linen liner.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is a field edged in mature maple trees in Settler’s Cabin Park, near me in Western Pennsylvania. On a summer day clouds moved overhead, casting shadows that moved with the breeze. I chose a looser style to capture all the movement I sensed in the afternoon.

The original is framed with a 2-1/2″ white top mat and 1/2″ sage green with olive core bottom mat mat in a 16″ x 18″ plain square 1″ cherry wood frame.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting was the featured art for 2016: Sun Shadow Ice & Snow, Seasons on the Panhandle Trail and depicts me walking through a favorite section of the woods along the trail where the sycamores and maples grow straight up toward the sky from the flood plain and it feels like a green cathedral.

I’ve never done a self-portrait of any sort. At my first Panhandle Trail exhibit in 2014 I set the standard for exhibits to follow by walking through the woods to Robinson Run to get water for my big enamel cooking pot and walking back gathering wildflowers for my display. I don’t usually think of myself as a subject in my landscapes but liked the idea of myself walking along a familiar path dressed to meet the public in my festival clothes, carrying flowers and a bucket of water. Because I have so few photos of me and find I both like to see them and need to use them in promotions, I asked a friend to photograph me in this activity after the show. They quickly became some of my favorite photos, and I’d always wanted to do a painting or two from them. I have never been the subject of one of my paintings, but kept visualizing this painting, especially when I had come into a really beautiful vintage frame that would be perfect for my idea. I added touches of different gold finishes to the details of the frame and it all came together.

A decade ago I called my first poetry ready “Paths I Have Walked” because so much of the inspiration for my poetry, other writing art and photography came from finding paths all over the hills and valleys where I grew up and following them wherever they led, and also following some other paths out of this place, giving me experience and a perspective. I had used this title on my 2011 poetry book using Dusk in the Woods on the cover. When I cast about for a title for this painting it came to mind fairly quickly; I also have future plans to set up my writing website and I’d planned to use one of the photos from the series of me in the woods so it all ties in together. I will write more later about the symbolism of this piece in my life today, but for now I will just say it feels entirely suitable. I have the feeling we will be seeing much more of this painting, and though I feel a little self-conscious that it’s kind of a self-portrait I’m glad I’ve finally appeared in my own art. Somehow that becomes necessary after time.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting was included in 2016: Sun Shadow Ice & Snow, Seasons on the Panhandle Trail. It’s another one I’d been wanting to paint, a day in the woods and on the trail with my great-niece Cassidy and great-nephew Kyler from 2011, from the same visit where I got the reference photos for “The Swimming Hole” and the photo “Looking Forward”. This piece is titled “Running Through the Woods”, something everyone should have the chance to do when they are growing up, just letting loose and running along a path with the tall trees all around and the expanse of green urging you on. I’m so glad I had the chance to paint it after visualizing it for all these years.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

There are two large sycamore trees near the entrance of the Panhandle Trail, but because they are growing against a hill I don’t see them from this angle against the sky until I am headed back home, nearly at the trailhead, and often at dusk, especially the early dusk of a winter night. Because the light changes so quickly at that time of day I knew there was no way I’d be able to capture the scene en plein air, so I photographed it almost every time I saw it. I guess I really wanted to paint this scene, and for this year’s Panhandle Trail exhibit I decided it was time.

I debated among media to use. I wanted the smooth solid color of the evening sky to the east, I wanted each branch and twig to be clear, and I wanted it to look almost monochromatic, capturing the l’heure bleu I love so much. Though I’d always imagined a watercolor I decided on pastel, mostly because I could feel my hand drawing the twisted twigs. To achieve the smooth background I used colored pastel paper, Canson Mi Tientes, on the smooth side, because the blue was just what I wanted for a cold winter dusk. I drew the shadows and characteristic mottling of a sycamore tree on the trunks and branches in dark warm gray pastel, the highlights in light warm gray, then added just touches of blue for the mid-range shadows. The moon is in pure white with its characteristic grayish shapes on the glowing white surface that make it recognizably our moon, and resting among the somewhat gnarled sycamore branches.

The canvas print below is 11″ x 14″, and 8″ x 12″ and 8″ x 10″ are also easily available in the thinbar style, with narrower 3/4″ edges. The art stands up well to enlargement and looks great even as a 16″ x20″. Larger canvases have 1-1/2″ edges and take a little longer to make.

I apologize for the bad photo of the framed original, taken during my exhibit in my tent at night (I need to get with the wonderful couple who purchased the original to get a better image). I framed the original in a slightly decorative gold frame, Pacific blue mat with decorative gold fillet, and I can frame a print in the same manner, or I can frame a print with a less expensive single blue mat and gold or oak wood frame.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I painted this scene for my August 2014 exhibit “Sun Shadow Ice & Snow: Seasons of the Panhandle Trail” during Rock the Quarry, the annual fundraiser for the Panhandle Trail.

This painting doesn’t have as big of a story as others, but I will say it’s hard to paint along the trail in autumn—or anywhere else for that matter. The overwhelming colors, especially on a sunny day, have me running from place to place looking for the best spot to paint until the narrow window of good sunlight on an autumn day is past, so I end up working in my studio.

I like to capture the tree-covered hills and water and sky and just plain nature in most paintings because the trail itself isn’t a very interesting feature, being just a flat limestone chip path. But in this case, in autumn, it provides a break in the riot of color and also an area to feature those long blue shadows of the trees themselves. That’s really why I chose this scene when I came home with a head full of colors and shapes.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I painted this scene for my August exhibit “Sun Shadow Ice & Snow: Seasons of the Panhandle Trail” during Rock the Quarry, the annual fundraiser for the Panhandle Trail.

I decided to do this painting at pretty much the last minute, though I’d been visualizing it for years. The scene is one I’ve often seen along the trail on a winter evening. This painting was done from a photo I’d taken one of those winter evenings on the trail, a clear, cold day with a cloudless sky at sunset, the sky reflected on Robinson Run. The velvety darkness of the land contrasts so completely with the brilliance of the sky and its reflection on the water and, simple as it is, it’s always been one of my favorite images.

I used black Canson charcoal/pastel paper and only painted the areas of light and finally achieved what I’d been visualizing.

I took a photo of this brilliant scene years ago, then a couple of decades later was surprised one autumn morning to see it wasn’t terribly different. I pulled the original photo and saw the trees hadn’t quite grown in and there was more sun on the sidewalk and more rooftops to see so did a sketch of it in preparation for a larger painting. I never got past the sketch, but I like it as is.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I carry with me a little pouch of art materials including pencils, gel pens, fountain pens, markers, charcoal and Conte crayons so I’m always ready to capture an image. As a contrast to working in pastel, I love drawing in ink because of the patterns I can make with lines to create shadows and textures, and it’s just right for capturing that beautiful stark winter sunlight on a cloudless day that shines nearly horizontally in early December, highlighting distinct edges and shadows.

This is larger than the usual 5″ x 8″ sketchbook, however, as I had started carrying a larger sketchbook when I was on my bicycle. This one was intended to be done on site, but to be honest the angle of the houses nearly defeated me. I had to start the drawing three times before I finally captured the acute angle and could start working on details. By then the sun had moved so far that shadows were very deep and I’d lost much of the fine detail in the facades of the houses. I had taken photos and ended up finishing it up at home.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I pulled up to a stop sign and saw this view of Main Street at night in the rain. I took a photo with my ever-present digital camera (and actually have it in my gallery “At Night in the Rain” ) but at the time a friend had also given me boxes of leftover art materials from her aunt including canvas panels and acrylic paints and brushes. I could visualize this in acrylic paint, the fuzzy glow around the streetlights, the lights in the windows, the long, ragged reflections on the street, and so I painted it. I entered it in annual the “Carnegie Painted” art exhibit in 2007 and it’s also part of the gallery “My Home Town”, a collection of 12 of my favorite paintings of all the ones I’d entered in that exhibit over nearly a decade.

The original was sold but this image is available as a print in the gallery “My Home Town” as a note card on my website.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

From the window at the back of my house I can see out over the valley and the hill beyond. When it snows at night the scene is transformed from black velvet punctuated by rooftops and streetlights and lit windows to a hazy wonderland of blue and creamy white, the familiar rooftops and trees given depth and dimension by the falling snow. Just like “Frosty Morning, Just Before Sunrise”, I’d been visualizing this little painting of the snow falling at night, the house with lit windows nestled into the snow-dusted branches and bramble and trees, silhouettes of rooftops beyond, the lights of Carnegie’s Main Street brightening the view behind them, then the haze of snowfall where normally I’d see only darkness. It looks quaint and kind of cliché, but it looks like home to me.

This painting is done in Sennelier pastels on Fabriano Pastello Tiziano paper, in the dark green hue. I knew that I could get the softness I wanted from the Sennelier pastels on this paper which has a nice soft surface to capture pastel, and though I wasn’t sure I wanted the texture of the laid finish it worked well to break up and soften the edges. I used three tones of Prussian blue which is a cool blue tending toward slate blue and tempered it with violet and gray in the shadows, then added pinks and yellows to the lighter areas. The windows, of course, are several shades of yellow.

If snow is what you’ve got, then snow is what you paint—I’m going to take advantage of it while it’s here. I’ve started another sketch from this morning when there was still snow in the air but the sun was shining.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is indeed from the Winter Solstice in 2003. As the sun began to set on a zero-degree day with a foot or more of snow the light was so beautiful that I took off in my car with my camera and art supplies. At the top of the hill the gentle pink and coral tones of the sunset melded with the blue of dusk on the field of unbroken snow at the old Christmas tree farm, one of my favorite spots. It was too cold to draw outside since I can’t wear gloves and would soon be dropping my pastels in the snow, so I positioned my car on a convenient side road and sketched this in my front seat. As it does sometimes, the sun seemed to hang in the trees just before it disappeared: solstice, “sun-stand-still”.

spruces standing dignified sentinel
to the moment
of transition.

It’s just a little thing, 6″ x 6″, one of my favorites, especially now that the place is gone to development. It became the inspiration for an exhibit I hosted in 2004, “Winter White”.

And this painting, which I’ve always loved so much, has a wonderful home with a friend who also loves it very much.

(This is another of those beautiful places that isn’t there anymore.)

The original of this painting was pastel, 31″ x 27″, on illustration board hand-finished with pastel ground. I offer full-size giclee prints as well as a variety of digital and canvas prints.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sloping hills blaze with autumn color at a rocky, rippled bend in Chartiers Creek, yet on the horizon deep gray-purple clouds hover; although the day was sunny I remember it being distinctly chilly with a sharpness to the breeze, especially on the water in a canoe, and winter is literally on the horizon.

For two reasons the scene was reminiscent and inspiring: first, that I rounded the bend to see this natural splendor in all its detail, brilliant color, fluttering leaves, rippling water, changing clouds, happening all on its own with no help from me or any other human; and, second, it was an example of that “change of season” with the gray-purple clouds of winter arriving on the horizon, two seasons blending into one another. I needed to share this image, and it was so moving that the inspiration also became a poem, and the title for my third annual poetry reading and art show at Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall, Change of Season.

No, I couldn’t paint while paddling, and my little digital photos didn’t do the scene justice, yet other than wading down the creek and setting up an easel in the middle of the water, there was no other way of painting this. To take the scene from the tiny digital image to the full-size painting took a good bit of memory and visualization; it’s a good thing I’m very familiar with scenes like this.

“April Cloud Study” is an original pastel sketch, 9″ x 9″ painted in my back yard in April 2013. It’s framed in a salvage frame I finished with a color undercoat and a crackle top coat.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Once the weather turns warm and sunny the world begins coloring up nicely, and so it did one April afternoon. I decided to take some time to paint the clouds, literally and figuratively, standing out in my back yard with my pastel for about ten minutes—and by that time the skies were completely different.

This is in Sennelier pastel on Wallis sanded pastel paper. The mats are 1.5″, white on white. Frame is 12″ x 12″ and I refinished it to coordinate with the painting in shades of blue green and lilac from the painting with a white crackle finish.

Spring Grass, cropped.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

All the sun on all this green stuff is just too much! But it was the lush grass that became one of this spring’s first outdoor sketches. I actually painted this from a photo, taken the same day as I photographed the dandelions with the honey bee. This photo stayed in my mind for its simplicity but bold patterns and color, but I was feeling my pastels instead of a photo post. After a few days working out in my garden and filling my eyes with green I thought I’d paint this one after all, and sooner rather than later.

It’s painted in mixed brand pastels on white multimedia paper. I’ve also included the uncropped version of the painting; sometimes I like the rough edges.

The original is framed with a 1-1/2″ white mat in a 9″ x 12″ white molded wood frame.

“Lilacs and Laundry” is an original pastel sketch, 9″ x 12″ painted in my back yard in May 2013. It’s framed in a white solid wood frame with a white mat.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

What got me in trouble today when I should have gotten some work done inside was how cute my laundry looked with the lilac blooming about it. I have a thing for laundry in paintings, so I decided to take some time to do a little sketch. I use my limited set of pastels outdoors so I don’t lose or damage the “good ones”, so I need to touch it up with some other colors and finish off the edges.

The lilac has never bloomed this much—after about 15 years it’s finally come into its prime. The red specks in the back are the first roses on my red climber that swings over the gate, the pink flowers on the chair and on the ground are the first geraniums blooming after I’ve brought them out of their winter home in the basement. The short blue is forget-me-nots, the tall is a flowering bulb called Camassia given to me as a gift years ago, still blooming reliable each spring.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

I offer giclees of this painting in two different sizes: the full size of 31″ x 23″, a half-size of 16″ x 12.5″. The giclees have 2″ of white around the outside edges. All are countersigned by me.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original. Digital prints are only available up to 11″ x 17″ and some of the prints are cropped to fit standard mat and frame sizes.

Digital prints have at least 1/2″ around the edges depending on the size of the print. All are countersigned by me.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered because I have limited storage space. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting. This canvas mirrors the edges of the image around the sides.

FRAMED PRINTS

I do all my own framing and can custom frame a print for you. Please ask.

The original of this painting was a pastel, 14″ x 20″ in soft pastel on Wallis pastel paper.

I framed it in a custom plain matte black moulding with a 4″ acid-free white mat. Framed size is 22″ x 28″. The original is sold but I also have giclee, digital and and canvas prints.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In 2014 when I imagined organizing an exhibit of landscapes I’d on sketched and painted on, and of, the Panhandle Trail, this image was the principal image I envisioned and became my symbol for the exhibit, “Sun Shadow Ice & Snow: Seasons of the Panhandle Trail”.

I hadn’t done this painting yet, but for years I’d planned a painting of this iconic rope swing, which everyone who’d grown up in the area knew about. For all the years I’d considered having an exhibit like this, on the trail, as part of the annual event, the decision to finally paint this also made me decide this was the year to do it. I usually volunteer a few hours in the kitchen and walk around to take photos (I also manage the website) but this would be way more fun.

How did we kids live through our childhoods with things like rope swings available to us? I was thrilled to find a rope swing the first time I went exploring off the trail years ago and took a few swings on it myself just for fun, and when my great nieces and nephews came to visit from Savannah, a visit to the trail and the rope swing were tops on the list.

I pictured this painting to be in high summer, at noon when the sun is bright and hot overhead and the woods are dark and cool, and just coming upon the tree and the swing, the stream running past, standing in the deep darkness underneath looking at the lacy sunlight on the leaves of the tree and lacy shadows on the packed dirt beneath it and the swing itself silhouetted against the brightness beyond, in that moment when the potential is there, just before you decide to go for it.

The spot where this swing hangs is also one of my favorite places off the trail, and I visit there each time I use the trail, in all seasons—in mid-summer to have a dip into Robinson Run where there’s a nice pool there with water that’s always cool, and in winter to see the stream in winter, covered with ice and snow piled in the woods.

So there it is, the old rope swing, waiting for you off in the woods. Go and have an adventure!

 

SHIPPING AND CHARGES

Shipping within the US is included in the cost of each print.

Prints up to 16″ x 20″ are shipped flat in a rigid envelope. Larger prints are shipped rolled in a mailing tube unless otherwise requested; flat shipping is an extra cost because it’s oversized.

GICLEE PRINTS

The giclees are printed on acid-free hot press art paper for a smooth matte finish using archival inks. Giclee is the highest quality print available because the technique uses a dozen or more ink ports to capture all the nuances of the original painting, including details of the texture, far more sensitive than any other printing medium. Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

From my Christmas Day walk in 2014, the trail with a dusting of snow, the denseness of the trees along side and on a hill beyond, and the overcast sky. This is the first time I’ve used this toned paper while sketching, and it’s ideal for these winter types of sketches to start with a mid-tone.

The day began with a sunny morning but was so murky dark by the time I was ready to go in the early afternoon I held off until later. We did see some sun here and there, but I decided a late afternoon or even dusk visit would be good, and it was. It meant color was pretty much out of the question, not because there wasn’t any but because an overcast sky like that can really change the way my pastels look in the box and on paper. I did start one but decided to bring it home to finish, and will do others from photos—the clouds broke briefly just before sunset with lots of wispy color in the sky, awakening the cool blues and purples in the landscape, but the light changed so fast it was impossible to catch.

SHIPPING

Shipping within the US is included in all the prices listed. All shipping is via Priority Mail. Prints are shipped flat in a rigid envelope. Canvases are shipped in a box to fit with padding. Since this original is small it is also shipped in a box with extra padding.

FRAMED ORIGINAL

It’s monochromatic, the top mat pale gray black core and the bottom raven black white core, the frame 1″ wide solid wood finished matte black.
