March is a month of change so the choice of feline art for this month is all over the place. This is often the month I’ll choose a monochromatic image or nearly so or even black and white because all other months have color associations for me but March has many, I had a dozen different paintings and sketches chosen as possibilities and had to somehow score them so that I would fell I’d made the best choice of something you and I would like to look at for a full month. I don’t like to use the same medium or style or color theme two months in a row because I like to keep them interesting. This time, I’m including a little gallery of the runners-up so you can see how hard the choice was, but in the end I chose a new one, from just last month, because until the leaves come on the trees in April this is pretty much what this scene will look like, and we’re all spending quite a bit of time up there.

Here’s what I had to say when I posted it in January:

I am participating in Leslie Saeta’s annual “30 in 30” painting challenge this month. This is my painting for day 15, and it’s the first cat sketch I’ve done. I painted a number of portraits over the holidays so I moved to landscapes and other subjects first. I actually had a different image planned for today but Mimi, Mewsette and Mr. Sunshine were totally enchanting getting organized in the best cuddle pile on my drafting table by the window, the light was wonderful, and, well, here you are. I kept visualizing the three black shapes and tried to ignore them and stop visualizing a sketch. Good luck with that. I told myself that if they lined up, one-two-three, I would sketch them. It took a while, but, don’t you know, they did.

I wasn’t sure which crop I liked better on this sketch. Above I have the crop that preserves all the edges even though the windows aren’t right, the panes are each the same size. Below is the crop that includes the image area I’d wanted, but I like the black edges. Whatever, I guess I don’t really have to make a decision.

But then, I like this crop too, just the “important” area of the art.

And of course, when I create a monthly digital calendar, I crop it in many different ways. This little painting is pretty flexible so that’s why it won the choice. And below is the gallery of runners-up. Purrhaps you’ll see a theme!
