My Neighbor's Laundry, A Summer Thing

I do have a thing for laundry. This is one of several paintings featuring or including laundry.

This could be anywhere, but Carnegie really is a place where people still use their backyards to hang laundry, including me. And it really is my neighbor’s laundry in the back yard on a lovely summer morning.

I originally painted this in 2005 for my home town’s annual art exhibit “Carnegie Painted”. It was one of the very first acrylic works I’d painted since high school, but I could see the colors, see the canvas, see the texture of the paint and off I went.

This painting, however, is only a small portion of the original, which was 16″ x 20″. There was a neat old barn of a garage behind it that I love and have photographed so many times in all seasons, plus some trees and nice shadows. I just couldn’t work out the colors on the barn but I loved the laundry. I couldn’t enter the painting with the barn that was, as I remember, embarassingly amateur, so I cut this little section out of the canvas panel and framed it.

The original was sold but that summer morning lives on, available as this print and in the gallery “My Home Town” as a note card on my website.
