Above is a new piece I’m working on—for the art exhibit I have this weekend. August 26 and 27 is my annual exhibit on the Panhandle Trail. I am spending this weekend trying to finish off a few new pieces for it as I’ve also been trying to finish off several portraits I’ve been working on. I hate to work last minute because I want to enjoy creating my artwork, but I don’t think I’ve ever known a more difficult summer for getting work done.

Even aside from the falling tree and the unexpected death of my brother, materials have been a challenge this summer. Often art stores stock for school supplies as well as everyday customers and when the end of the semester comes or there is no semester in session things aren’t so well stocked. I can order online, but when I only need something like two different soft pastels the shipping can cost more than the merchandise, and sometimes I need to see the pastel in person to know if it’s the right color. Drawing paper often comes in a minimum quantity, and the coated pastel paper can be expensive per sheet to start with, multiplied by 10 sheets it’s sometimes more than I have available. And then certain matboards are either no longer available or on backorder so even getting my sampler boxes out has been a challenge.

I caught a little bit of a rainbow from the window crystal when I did a quick photo of “Sycamore Moon”, above.

At one point everything I’m working on had one material component that was either no longer available or on backorder, and I couldn’t work on anything. All the portraits I wanted to finish months ago and the art for this exhibit have been waiting while I called around, drove around, ordered, waited to see what came in from what I ordered. And then when it did come it, the temperatures in july and August made it impossible to work in pastel or to frame because of my sweaty hands.

So, here I am the weekend before my exhibit and I can finally get art done and framed! I won’t be posting as often in the coming week or next weekend, but after than I am looking forward to getting back to normal life in my studio.

The first three images in this post are drafts for three new paintings for this exhibit, and below is the invitation for the exhibit. But first, I want to give Mr. Sunshine credit for staying with me for some long hours and more than adequately performing his supervisory duties. He deserves a good long nap.

Mr. Sunshine has been a great help as I work in my studio.

For faraway friends: Though this is a “tent and display” show, I will be posting special discounts on both originals and prints and merchandise here when the show opens and afterward.

I’ve been visiting the Panhandle Trail for more than 15 years with my bike and on foot, for exercise and inspiration, more inspiration than exercise, packing in with backpacks of camera equipment and art supplies. I’ve taken thousands of photos along the trail and off in the woods, but I’ve also done a number of sketches while there in pencil, charcoal, pastel and watercolor, and arriving home in my studio to do more from photos. I’ve collected a number of these for an exhibit, but not in a gallery—right on the trail, where I’ve spent so much time and found these inspirations. It’s the place where I found the scene of one of my favorite paintings, “Dusk in the Woods”.

Each year I’ve added something new. My first year debuted many original paintings, and my second I shared many of my favorite photos. This year I will have new paintings plus note cards, greeting cards and gift items. Some prior originals are also available as are prints of just about everything. You’ll find:

  • all original paintings that are available
  • framed prints of select photos included in the exhibit
  • framed digital prints of select paintings included in the exhibit
  • digital prints of all the photos in various sizes
  • greeting cards and note cards of many of the paintings and photos
  • various handmade gift items and housewares

You’ll find me in my tent during Rock the Quarry, the annual fundraiser for the Collier Friends of the Panhandle Trail. I’ll have my exhibit set up and also have a display of prints, photos and notecards I’ve created over the years of scenes from along the trail and off in the woods. Once Rock the Quarry is over, they all come home with me so this will be your only opportunity to see them all together, although I will set them up as an online gallery as I have been setting up each of my exhibits.

A portion of sales of art and merchandise during Rock the Quarry will benefit the Collier Friends of the Panhandle Trail.

Visit here to see the artwork and photos from previous exhibits that will also be included in this exhibit.

If you’re local I hope to see you. If you’re not, I’ll be sharing it here later this week and immediately this weekend.
