Birds and Wildlife

I photograph birds through my windows all year long. My yard is a registered Backyard Wildlife Habitat and I have feeders and bird baths set up year round, lots of native and hybrid flowers, shrubs and trees with berries, just about any window has a view of birds in action. Most are digital, but I’m also scanning decades of negatives from my trust old Pentax K1000.

Sing Your Song

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have been trying to get this photo for years, the wren standing up with her head thrown back and her beak open in song, especially in the morning light. They flit around so fast and I’m often photographing through my window so I can’t follow their flight. But I heard a sudden burst of wren song and looked out to see this little one on the deck railing. I focused and caught one photo as she hopped a step or two between each verse.

SHIPPING

Shipping within the US is included in all the prices listed. All shipping is via Priority Mail. Prints are shipped flat in a rigid envelope. Canvases are shipped in a box to fit with padding. Since this original is small it is also shipped in a box with extra padding.

FRAMED PRINTS

The photo is double matted with black core white acid-free mat and a solid wood matte black 25″ x 23″ frame and I’ve used a more square layout, but the image can also be more rectangular, and other styles are often available; check the thumbnails above to see what’s available now or ask about custom framing. Framed prints are signed on the photo and on the mat.

Other custom framing options are also available for a special quote. Please ask if you’d like another option.

PHOTO PRINTS

Prints are made on acid-free gloss photo paper using archival digital inks. I usually leave an inch or two of white around the print for easier frame fitting. All prints are countersigned by me.

Larger sizes are available than what I have listed, so please ask if you want a special size.

CANVAS PRINTS

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered here because customers often want a custom size. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting.

This canvas print is beautifully printed in archival inks on artist canvas and gallery wrapped around 1″ stretchers. Sides are finished in white.

A female rubythroat peruses purple irises. There was plenty of red and pink in a friend’s garden, but I guess she decided to try a different flavor.

Above is the full photo I took that day. I offer various sizes of this photo and some include more of the irises left and right. I like it just about any way.

"A Good Traveler"

“A Good Traveler” prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“A good traveler has no fixed plans,
and is not intent on arriving.”

~Lao-Tzu in Chapter 27 of the Tao te Ching, tr. Stephen Mitchell

It doesn’t mean you make no plans, just that you allow them to change.

These geese look like a bunch of tourists ambling along, and yet on that day we had had heavy rains and our creek, their home, had nearly topped its banks. They had fled the water and the banks and were up in the parking lot and on the streets for safety, yet they were being calm and collected, for a bunch of geese, while the humans were racing around predicting a flood that was not likely to arrive, though it looked imminent.

But aside from that lesson, I’ve always liked the photo of the geese.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I really wanted the silhouette of the crow against the uncertain, flat post-storm sky but, still dim from rain, my camera didn’t focus fast enough and I caught this simple balanced composition instead. Maybe that’s what I was intended to get. http://wp.me/s75dub-simple

Cabbage White Butterfly on Asters, Butterfly Photo

Cabbage White Butterfly on Asters, Butterfly Photo

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

While I often photograph butterflies and wildflowers in the wild, these were actually growing in a parking lot. When our town’s parking lots were rebuilt a few years ago standards for stormwater management were integrated into the plan, and a swale with plantings between the rows of cars was filled with native plants. Each year asters, hypericum, helenicum, goldenrod, several ornamental grasses and more bloom in succession through the year.

Occasionally I choose a photo rather than a painting for my Nature & Wildlife desktop calendar. This series of photos of abundant asters visited by white and cream cabbage butterflies came to mind as the light changed for September, milder, soft and warm.

I think all the pollinators in town were pleased with our decision to plant native plants in our new parking lots, as I watched this one particular butterfly flit endlessly from one aster to the next gathering his autumn harvest before the frost, hence the title.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This female Tiger Swallowtail butterfly is in her black form or dark phase. This dark cloaking mimics the poisonous Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly, and predators have adapted to avoid them, so the black form female Tiger Swallowtail keeps herself safe though she is not at all dangerous while she is absolutely beautiful in old-fashioned midsummer phlox.

Black Phase Swallowtail Visiting the Phlox, Butterfly Photo

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This Black Phase Tiger Swallowtail butterfly’s body is what always fascinates me—big bold white polka dots on black. They love this old-fashioned phlox, given to me by an elderly neighbor many years and two houses ago. It’s very fragrant and many insects and even birds visit it all summer.

Tiger Swallowtail and Joe-pye Weed, Butterfly Photo

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Joe-pye is a native wild plant, a soft pink in tufts on tall plants in the early autumn woods. Tiger swallowtail butterflies skip from one tall stalk to another, delicately walking on the fluff and feeding. The brilliant yellow, the colorful spots and the striped body look very festive.

If you are interested in butterflies and habitats, please read my article about designing, building and certifying your butterfly habitat, along with downloadable information sheet of plants and butterfly species on The Creative Cat, Your Backyard Wildlife Habitat: Plan and Certify Your Butterfly Garden Habitat.

mallard ducks on pond

Swimming in Gold

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

October 2020 was the most incredibly beautiful autumn in many years. Ironically, because of the pandemic, I had the time to run around to the woods and trails and parks to photograph as much as I could, and it was a fairly safe thing to do in that time.

And the time was perfect to capture this photo, especially the time of day when the angle of the sun cast minimal shadows as the maple trees around the duck pond layered color on the rippled water with tiny bits of sky as a backdrop to the pair of perfect mallard ducks.

Curious

“The Backyard Bunny” photo series prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas.

[ss_product id=’e5ffa8d4-4e48-11e6-a635-0cc47a075d76′ ]Photo, “Curious”[/ss_product]

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Little bunnies acting like they are big bunnies are just adorable. If that sounds corny, it’s true. This little one lives in a nest along the edge of my garden. It’s the only one I see and I don’t know the status of the bunny’s siblings, so she may really be the center of her own little universe.

They look a little blurry and soft because I photographed them through the screen door in my basement. But I like that softening, it adds a bit of magic to an ordinary scene.

In the last photo I decided to apply a filter to the image and desaturate the photo so the bunny looks like the little statue she is trying to imitate.

The photo is double matted with black core white acid-free mat and a solid wood matte black 25″ x 23″ frame and I’ve used a more square layout, but the image can also be more rectangular, and other styles are often available; check the thumbnails above to see what’s available now or ask about custom framing.
