I Chased a Sunset

Racing over acres of the park to watch the sun drop below the far horizon, the bare silhouetted trees, the perfect shading in the sky from violet through red to yellow, the violet snow, the final fiery red blaze before it all faded—and all nature made, I was only there to record it.

Really, on the way home from a quick errand to a shopping center I encountered a stunning winter sunset just beginning to color and decided to take a detour through a local park to see it in progress. All I had was my smartphone which doesn’t handle colors and contrasts at all well, but decided I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

The sunset had me racing over acres of the park which is on a ridge over a valley, just the perfect setting to watch the sun drop below the far horizon with both trees as a foreground, and then nothing but sky. The first photo I took, the one that named this gallery, “I Chased a Sunset”, captured so many things I wanted, and I decided if this was the only good one I got I would be happy. But my adventures over a half hour, driving here and there and trying to be everywhere at once because it was all so incredible—the bare silhouetted trees, the perfect shading in the sky from violet through red to yellow, the violet snow, the final fiery red blaze before it all faded—and all nature made, I was only there to record it.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This photo is one of the “I Chased a Sunset” series of photos, which you can see in full below. I have had evolving favorites from this series, and had considered creating a pastel of this image. But I love it so much as a photo it’s hard to decide. The soft purple of the sky and the way the trees, standing shoulder to shoulder in still and silent unison, filter the fiery red and yellow of the sunset, as if it’s protecting something, or maybe you, speak to me of stories. In fact, I’ve used this image to accompany at least one of my stories.

SHIPPING

Shipping within the US is included in all the prices listed. All shipping is via Priority Mail. Prints are shipped flat in a rigid envelope. Canvases are shipped in a box to fit with padding. Since this original is small it is also shipped in a box with extra padding.

FRAMED PRINTS

The photo is double matted with black core white acid-free mat and a solid wood matte black 25″ x 23″ frame and I’ve used a more square layout, but the image can also be more rectangular, and other styles are often available; check the thumbnails above to see what’s available now or ask about custom framing. Framed prints are signed on the photo and on the mat.

Other custom framing options are also available for a special quote. Please ask if you’d like another option.

PHOTO PRINTS

Prints are made on acid-free gloss photo paper using archival digital inks. I usually leave an inch or two of white around the print for easier frame fitting. All prints are countersigned by me.

Larger sizes are available than what I have listed, so please ask if you want a special size.

CANVAS PRINTS

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered here because customers often want a custom size. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting. This canvas is black around the sides.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

…and it disappeared over the edge
and took a piece of my soul with it.

This was the first photo I took, and I decided if this was the only good one I got, I would be happy. I love so many things about the composition—the shape the trees make and how they march over the edge of the snow, the perfect shading in the sky from violet through red to yellow, the violet snow—and most of it is nature made, I was only there to record it.
