Waterscape Artwork

Water in all its many places and moods—trickling stream to lake to ocean—is a constant subject for me. One of the most mutable substances for an artist to study, it can reflect any color and take any shape. It can be the subject of a work or a simple background effect. I haven’t managed to render nearly as many waterscapes as I would like, but have attempted to portray a wide range of its possibilities.

I’ve separated out my images of lakes and oceans for portrayal here.

Most works are available in their original, but I also offer a variety prints on paper or canvas and notecards of quite a few.

Evening Beach is a watercolor, 8 x 10, painted in 2000. I offer it in three sizes and styles of prints.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

After the first time I visited the beach I discovered that sand was much like snow, my other favorite subject, in the tones and colors it held in all the different lights of day. I liked this quiet scene as the wind picked up at evening.

What can you say about gulls that is unique, since this is pretty much what they do all day? I’ve done a few other gull paintings and intend to do a few more, but unless I start numbering them I have to find something about this gull, “[Adjective] Gull”, that will make this painting different from the others. At least to me.

Last year at this time I was in Savannah, Georgia, delivering two rescued and well-socialized kittens to my niece and great niece and nephews. My niece and I spent an afternoon enjoying the beach, me for the first time in about 30 years, and doubly wonderful in January having left a moderate snowfall and very cold temperatures behind in Pennsylvania.

I took more photos of gulls and waves than anyone should have taken though I tried to be more restrained. Still, I’m glad I did, as I have this particular gull standing in exactly the same spot but with head turned in different directions, from different angles, and with different levels of reflection on the water. So, now, when I have finally found the time to do a few sketches and paintings from last year’s photos, I can sort through my gull photos and find exactly the right one, the tide washing back down the beach at an angle, the gull’s reflection broken up in a clear and interesting pattern, the blue of the reflected sky gradating from light to dark.

I liked the uncropped version too. Sometimes I like the rough edges on a sketch.

GICLEE PRINTS

The giclees are printed on acid-free hot press art paper for a smooth matte finish using archival inks. Giclee is the highest quality print available because the technique uses a dozen or more ink ports to capture all the nuances of the original painting, including details of the texture, far more sensitive than any other printing medium. Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original. Digital prints are only available up to 11″ x 17″ and some of the prints are cropped to fit standard mat and frame sizes.

Digital prints have at least 1/2″ around the edges depending on the size of the print. All are countersigned by me.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered because I have limited storage space. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting. This canvas mirrors the edges of the image around the sides.

FRAMED PRINTS

I do all my own framing and can custom frame a print for you. Please ask.

I have no idea why I chose to tackle this one today, except that after working on the water in yesterday’s little painting of a gull, the visualization I’ve had to do this painting for the past five years just took over my visual thoughts.

The reference photo was taken on a bright January day with lots of snow cover, and the mallards floating on Chartiers Creek where it flows under Main Street on my walk to the bank and post office. The water is shallow there, and with the noonday sun shining right down on it with no shade from trees, the water is filled with light as well as the sky reflecting down onto the surface and light reflecting in various shapes and colors onto every little ripple. It was beautiful to look at, but darned complicated to piece together the interaction of light in the water and on the water and reflections on the surface. I was determined to keep it loose because I didn’t want to contain the movement of the water with unmoving edges.

I named it “Sparkling Gems” because the water is so sparkling and clear like aquamarine, emerald, jade, peridot, tourmaline, malachite, turquoise, while the mallards are like the deeper gems, ruby, garnet, sapphire, lapis, adventurine, agate, and all so beautiful after a few days of cold and snow.

This is a view of the Allegheny River in Western Pennsylvania, seen from Tarentum. I took a quick walk through the park along the river on a beautiful autumn day and took as many photos as I could. The hill is very high and steep behind this row of trees and otherwise the hill comes down to the bank of the river, but for this short stretch the row of trees was separated from the hill, deep in bluish shadow, while the trees caught the late afternoon sunlight.

I knew I wanted to keep this loose, just capturing the visual of the reflection and the contrast with the bright sunlight, bright leaves, and dark hillside.

I had intended to use navy blue paper for this painting because of the bluish cast of autumn, but I had no navy blue left in the pad of paper, so I used black. I used Strathmore charcoal paper, which is lightweight and has a finer texture than the other black pastel paper I’ve used. When paper is made the pulp is poured into a mold that has a screen in the bottom of it. The paper pulp is spread on the screen, then pressed into it with a piece of heavy felt. As it dries the paper holds the screen pattern on one side but is relatively smooth on the back. I considered using the “felt” side, which has only a slight screen texture, but then decided I wanted to use the texture to build the detail in the trees.

Really, it’s true, I just decided to be honest with the title. The seagull is standing on a beach on Hilton Head Island and I’d like to be there at just about any point, weather conditional.

I took photos of the beach when I visited my niece and I’m just working my way around to a few. It was January and the weather was quite calm so not too many exciting waves, but this colorful swell was actually very nice. The little riffle behind the gull, the curl of foam in front, I painted until I could hear it. So many of the artists I follow are painting waves these days, and I see wave workshops. I also wanted to catch that wave and just do at least one. I painted this on a scrap of Wallis sanded pastel paper because I needed to layer the pastel in just that way.

This is a signed digital print of an original painting, “Serenity”, pastel, that’s 5 x 20, just a long which I painted to fit a frame I recycled.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This sailboat drifted lazily for hours on the calm waters of Lake Arthur in Western Pennsylvania. As the August afternoon tended toward evening, the sky began to grow pink and the shadows darkened and lengthened, and the serene moment seemed to last for hours.

Painted en plein air as I sat on one of the beaches at the north end of the lake, watching this sailboat was one of my favorite afternoons; this painting always takes me back to that day.

Because of the odd size of this painting, the only reasonable reproduction is a giclee or a digital print, but I also offer custom framing.

Framed print

I use a white mat with a plain square 1″ pine frame in the sample above. Other mat and frame choices may cost more.

Burnished Waves, pastel, is a framed original painting, 10 x 16. It is matted with 3″ acid-free mats, 2.25″ teal with a leather-pattern texture on top, .25″ pale yellow and .5″ dusky blue on the bottom. It’s framed in a pre-made 16″ x 22″ wood frame which I hand-finished in antique gold with an olive gold metallic wash. The backing is acid-free foam core and the glass is premium clear glass.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This original pastel was painted “en plein air” as I stood on a beach at sunset on Presque Isle, in Erie, PA.

The deepening light of evening and sunset burnishes all it touches with gold and silver, and always encourages a time of memory and reflection for me. I had spent the day on Presque Isle in Erie, playing in the water, collecting shells and rocks, photographing the woods and water, and finally settled on one of the beaches facing west to do some painting. Rain clouds rolled in as the sun dropped toward the horizon, deepening shadows and brightening highlights as I did my best to capture the rapidly changing light, the building clouds and lapping waves which grew as the wind increased.

I matted and framed this painting when I finished it in 1999, but for many years it sat in my “extra paintings” box; there was something I just wasn’t happy with at the time. But when the time came for my annual poetry reading and art show in 2011 and nothing new fit what I was feeling in my poetry, I found this in the extras box and realized that when I painted it, I just wasn’t quite ready for its message.

This painting became the signature image for my fifth poetry reading and art exhibit at The Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall in January 2011 entitled “Burnished Light on Water”, featuring 12 new poems inspired by evening light and reflections, both physical and metaphoric, and an exhibit of paintings and photographs.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This original watercolor of beach houses on the Chesapeake Bay was painted from my own photos and memories. This is a view from Chincoteague Island across the Chesapeake Bay toward the mainland in Virginia. That stillness, that odd pink light of a sultry evening on the bay…the beach houses along the dock looked so puny and unprotected under that huge sky above and the water below that I took several photos in the days before panoramic images were available. Later, I brought them out and laid them side by side on my drafting table and sketched the scene onto a full sheet of watercolor paper, not knowing how much of the sky and water I’d use and leaving plenty of extra. I was just experimenting with watercolor techniques and materials and knew I wanted the clarity of the details on the beach houses to contrast with the big sky and water.

I first saw the ocean at the age of 30 when I visited Assateague Island, Virginia and felt as if I’d come home to an old friend; I also enjoyed meeting the wild ponies after having read all the books in the “Misty of Chincoteague” series and read about the island and wildlife refuge. I conspired how to make a living so I could stay there, but instead brought my photos back and have been painting from them ever since.

I took the reference photo for this in 2005. It’s been waiting 12 years to be painted. It was indeed a sunset cruise…down Chartiers Creek on a perfect July evening. Not only the delicate light on the nearly still water and the clear sky gradating up to deep blue, but the curve of the hills on either side. Of all the photos I took for this one scene, this off-center horizon has stayed with me all these years.

GICLEE PRINTS

The giclees are printed on acid-free hot press art paper for a smooth matte finish using archival inks. Giclee is the highest quality print available because the technique uses a dozen or more ink ports to capture all the nuances of the original painting, including details of the texture, far more sensitive than any other printing medium. Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

I offer giclees of this painting in two different sizes: the full size of 31″ x 23″, a half-size of 16″ x 12.5″. The giclees have 2″ of white around the outside edges. All are countersigned by me.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original. Digital prints are only available up to 11″ x 17″ and some of the prints are cropped to fit standard mat and frame sizes.

Digital prints have at least 1/2″ around the edges depending on the size of the print. All are countersigned by me.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered because I have limited storage space. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting. This canvas mirrors the edges of the image around the sides.

I do all my own framing and can custom frame a print for you. Please ask.

The Silent Lake, pastel, is a scene on Lake Erie from Presque Isle in Erie, PA, The original was 7″ x 10″, painted in 1999, available in three sizes and styles of prints.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The sunset struggled through a broken cloud cover for about an hour and a half, providing an ever-changing light show as it changed color and sent rays of light down to the lake in random patterns. The lake, so still and quiet and dark, had such presence, and seemed like a solid land mass instead of a fluid body.
