What Do You Do With Old Cigar Boxes? Keepsake Boxes!

I love the chance to repurpose something that has even the slightest chance to be used again. My house is full of things I’ve saved, accepted from others, bought at yard sales and thrift shops and, um, repurposed from someone’s pile of stuff at the curb. Many of my picture frames come from these origins, and everyday things I use around the house were repurposed. It just makes sense.

So when one of my commercial art customers offered me several cigar boxes as he cleaned his office I didn’t hesitate. The boxes are not fine furniture, but are a little bit misaligned, a tiny bit chipped, well used, still ready for a new life. I like the high gloss enamel, the rich black and especially the rich bright orange. As I mulled a myriad of ideas I decided the finish was still intact enough that I’d use it rather than strip it off or repaint.

I left the labels inside. I like label design.

In the meantime, I left all the boxes open in my shed for a couple of years while I thought about them and I guess that was enough to clear out the pungent tobacco smell.

Though I left the original gloss enamel painted finish, I removed a few labels from the top and sides but left the label inside just for authenticity. I like label design. The boxes have working brass catches on the front, the two smaller boxes have a small “C” in the center, and brass hinges.

My artwork is printed on acid-free label stock and adhered to the top surface.
