A Framed Print of "Blue and Yellow"

I like wide mats around small paintings, especially highly detailed small paintings. It helps to isolate them so there is less visual competition, and it makes something small seem like a bigger deal.

The person who purchased the original of this painting didn’t want the original 16″ x 16″ white frame and mat. I chose a different frame and cut a new mat for it, but I kept the original mat and frame and framed a print in place of the original.

This is available for $100.00, but it will be the only one available with this combination. After this all prints will be framed with 12″ x 12″ white or red oak frames and a single white mat.

Don’t worry about the apparent difference in the color of the art between the original, below, and the print, above—it’s darned difficult to photograph art behind glass and I had to make a lot of adjustments to it in order to lighten it up overall.

About “Blue and Yellow”

Spring is always about the first bursts of color, especially blooming things. I always have a stem or two or more of forsythia in my kitchen, and in those brief moments of sunshine the yellow is warm and brilliant before my classic (grocery store knock off) Blue Willow dishes.

I took a bunch of photos of the forsythia in my kitchen on April 8, 2006, and this one in particular stayed with me. The late afternoon sun angles in at that time of the year, and it just highlighted the area with the forsythia branch, as if it was intentional, but the clear light also defined the detailed pattern on the Blue Willow dishes. I love both. And not only was the sun’s natural highlight inspiring, but the shadows were as well, in the deep areas where the pattern is muted, and the middle areas where there is reflected light within the shadow.

Such a simple image, and so much to see within it. I wanted to paint this photo from that day on, both for all the inspirations I found in it and my love for paintings of little domestic settings with all their everyday details. I’m glad I finally did.

And I’m proud this painting won Best of Show in the North Hill Art Center annual juried member show in 2022!

Another connection with “Blue and Yellow”

It’s an interesting coincidence that I titled the reference photo I used for this painting “Blue and Yellow” back in 2006. It was all about those two color complements, the warm sunny yellow forsythia and the cool deep blue of the Blue Willow pattern. I remember thinking at that time that the title was another of those coincidences I had with the colors symbolic to Ukraine, and always thought about my ancestors who came from that country. I liked recognizing it, even peripherally. Today, it’s beyond me and my ancestors.
