As I was walking the last of the trail on my Christmas Day hike, the sun had set and the moon had risen and I approached the two sycamore trees side by side in the dim light, their bare branches etched against the blue-gray sky. I remembered the idea for a votive with the painting I’d done of those two sycamores, holding the full moon in their branches, and decided I needed to get around to that idea very soon.

I’ve made other votives with this painting using upcycled jars, but I’ve discovered that not all images just work that well on a spaghetti sauce jar. I found a vase that accommodates this painting perfectly and has the look that I had in mind—branches top to bottom, and all the way around.

This glass votive features my painting “Sycamore Moon” printed on a frosted label and burnished onto the jar. It’s made with a straight-sided glass vase 6.75″ tall x 4″ wide and comes with an LED tea light. The votive comes with an LED votive, but will also accommodate a larger LED candle. Below is how it is lit in darker conditions.
