This 10″ x 10″ pine wood “tray” doubles as a wall hanging—it has a 1″ x 1″ square frame all around and a firm backing has a print of my painting “Dusk in the Woods” in the bottom. I used a solid coat of medium blue on the sides. These trays are intended for decoration only or for lightweight objects.
About the artwork
I ran out of these trays, and the ones I usually purchase weren’t available anywhere just before the holidays. I found this square version which has a twine hanger and can also double as a wall hanging.
Below is what it looks like hanging.
I often use a wash of paint so that the woodgrain shows, but the grain in this wood was tighter than the usual trays so I painted it a solid medium blue.
These trays are purely decorative because they are made with lightweight wood which is especially thin inside the bottom so you can’t carry dishes to the table in them, but I have used them for carrying linens and flatware and lightweight things like breadbaskets. They do protect a countertop and also decorate a desk, used for papers. I am always on the lookout for more fully usable trays.
Here is what the usual tray looks like, though these vary as well in overall size and the styles of the handles.
I paint the outside and inside, then adhere a print of the image on my high quality art paper. When it’s dry I give them several coats of a light matte varnish to protect the image and the wood so they are waterproof for condensation from glassware, and can be lightly wiped down with a damp rag and mild detergent.
