Greenhouse Gerberas Tote Bag

I create my own “fabric” swatch by printing the pattern on medium-weight cotton fabric using a commercial quality fabric transfer and my heat press to ensure even coverage, then stitch up the rest of the bag with natural white trim, backing and 24″ twill woven handles. Bags may vary slightly in size, but are just about 17″W x 13″H.

I took the reference photo for this painting at a local greenhouse in 2013. I’ve always liked colorful gerbera daisies and their bold smiling faces. I’ve used it for a few graphic designs and decided someday I’d paint it too. So that time was now. I chose oil pastel because I’ve come to enjoy working out the flowers with layering and impasto on a rough-textured paper.

I also chose oil pastel because the tones of the colors matched the tones in the photo, and I could layer it and build up colors, then finish with working through the composition with the tip of a tool to add definition in the flowers, leaves and stems.

Here’s a detail of the bag and the design.
