Wildlife Artwork

I have traveled too little to see any real wildlife aside from the critters who inhabit my suburban garden, so I work from pictorial resources such as magazines and calendars. Nonetheless, after being accustomed to seeing domesticated animals in the relative comfort of my home and neighborhood, it is almost a shock to see an animal which has never known a human and cares nothing for human companionship. Studying a wild animal in its natural habitat is a reminder that the world does not revolve around us, that these creatures get along just fine (and probably better) without us, that we are really only one more species carrying out our lives on Earth. And while, for me, the inspiration to put an image on paper is always primarily a visual inspiration, wild animals carry the same emotional inspiration as domestic pets–animals are so un-selfconscious. Add to that the beauty of a natural landscape and you’ve got a perfect recipe for visual pleasure.

My backyard is a “Registered Backyard Wildlife Habitat”, and even though small and in a regular old neighborhood near Main Street, it is host to plenty of native species of all sorts, especially songbirds, hence the quantity of bird art.

Most works are available in their original, but I also offer a variety prints on paper or canvas and notecards of quite a few.

This is an original pastel painting of two whooping cranes taking off in a marsh on a summer afternoon, 18.25″ wide x 12.25″ high using Rembrandt pastels on Canson pastel paper, matted with a 4″ warm cream acid-free mat with 1/4″ burnished gold wood fillet edging and 1-1/4″ burnished gold frame. Non-feline greeting card: “Taking Flight”

Years ago I watched a documentary on the whooping crane, this huge, graceful white bird whose population had decreased to fewer than 20 birds from habitat loss and hunting by the early 1940s. Very early conservation efforts managed to save these birds from total extinction, though today there are still only around 600 birds including both wild and captive cranes.

A friend had visited one of the conservation areas and showed me a few photos of them. I wanted to do a painting of the cranes from one of her photos but the birds were far away and small. I sketched out what I’d like to see as the composition and referenced other photos of cranes for the details. For the marsh they inhabited I used photos of the marshes I’d taken on Assateague Island which had approximately the same grasses.

What would their afternoon have been like? I painted this in pastel, trying to capture the feeling of the scene from the original photo, the feeling of movement in the marshes, the waving sedges, lapping water and constant breeze.

And those summer colors, blue sky reflected on the water, reflected on the cranes.

The painting is 18.25″ x 12.25″, matted with a 4″ warm cream acid-free mat with 1/4″ burnished gold wood fillet edging and 1-1/4″ burnished gold frame. The backing is acid-free foam core and the glass is premium clear glass.

GICLEE PRINTS

The giclees are printed on acid-free hot press art paper for a smooth matte finish using archival inks. Giclee is the highest quality print available because the technique uses a dozen or more ink ports to capture all the nuances of the original painting, including details of the texture, far more sensitive than any other printing medium. Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I, as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original. Digital prints are available up to full size of 18.25″ wide x 12.25″, which is printed on 13″ x 19″ paper and so has very little white border. Other sizes have at least a 1″ white border, 2″ if possible. All are countersigned by me.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off of each side.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered here because customers often want a custom size. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. While I usually I set up canvases so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or a color that coordinates with the painting, these canvases actually wrap around using the area of the painting outside of the trim size.

SHIPPING

Prints up to 16″ x 20″ are shipped flat in a rigid envelope.

It’s one of our backyard bunnies. I’d been watching them since early morning in my yard and the neighbor’s, the grass bright green and the sun shining warm through their tall ears, and decided I’d eventually do a sketch of them, too, back in the days of my daily cat sketches. And then I decided to do one right then! I did take my drawing materials outside but I only got a start out there so it’s not quite en plein air; I finished it inside and bunnies have many of the same habits as it bears a resemblance to a photo I’d taken of a bunny in the back yard a few years ago. I’m sure as I finished the sketch, unfortunately without having taken a reference photo, I’m glad I finally got around to sketching our backyard bunny, it’s one of the sketches and paintings I’ve been planning for years. Maybe I’ll even sketch that pesky squirrel too…

Yes, there’s a story behind this…

Several years ago I was a member of a small business organization and was included in an article about small business owners setting up a retirement plan for themselves. The theme, of course, was “nest egg”, and the editors wanted some illustrative photos of us showing the nest egg theme, like holding bird’s nests or eggs or images along that theme.

The nests and eggs the photographer brought were clever and colorful, but being an artist and studying birds for years, they didn’t do too much for me. I had suggested I would be photographed out in my backyard wildlife habitat and for the article I’d say something about studying and sketching birds and their nests, and originally I wanted to use one of the nests I had on hand with a few reconstructed eggs. That was too realistic, perhaps, so I went to the next idea—I make my living as an artist, so I’m literally “drawing my own nest egg”. Perhaps use that as a metaphor?

So I had the sketch started and sat on the bench under my trees working on my sketch and that was the photo of me they used. I wish I could find the issue of the magazine that had my photo! It’s here somewhere, but things from a decade ago are in various places around my little house.

Hence the sketch of the nest with eggs, which I still like just as a sketch too. But there’s another interesting element to this story too.

I have  maintained a website called The Creative Cat since 2009 to share my pet portraits, my stories and poetry, my photographs and write about topics of interest and concern to people who love cats and also pets and all animals. I write about backyard wildlife habitats as part of that, and aside from the feline art I regularly share I also share the birds and other creatures as well.

In January 2010 I shared artwork “From the Lost Sketchbook” series, where I’d found a sketchbook from 2002 or thereabouts that I’d kept at my desk. This was a general purpose sketchbook and I used it for many things in addition to extemporaneous sketches such as illustrations and ideas, and it included sketches of my cats and a few other subjects. I was so happy to see it again so I scanned all the sketches that were pertinent to The Creative Cat and posted them. For all the cats and dogs I featured in my artwork on The Creative Cat, this sketch had the most views of any piece of artwork on The Creative Cat for several years. I have no idea why, but I’m glad readers enjoy it.

I saw a photo in a magazine of bison grazing on the plains and remembered historical and fictional novels I’d read from the “Little House on the Prairie” series to the settlement of the Great Plains. I put together what I saw in photos and what I’d visualized while reading of a countryside I’ve never seen.

This looks like a lot of bison, but considering how many populated this country just 200 years ago, this herd is just a shadow of what it once was, and in this orange twilight even their shapes are reduced to shadows.

The original pastel painting, 26.5″ x 17.5″, was done in Rembrandt pastels on Hahnemühle sanded watercolor paper. You can see a lot of ambient textures in the paper in this painting, and even, just above in the lower right corner, you can see the actual color of the paper. This is a sturdy German-made 300# watercolor paper with deckle edges which has the sanded finish used for pastel and charcoal layered onto it, tinted various colors. This was my preferred paper for pastels in the 90s and early 2000s in part because of the colors in which it was available. I rarely begin a painting with white paper, when when I saw the photos of the bison and envisioned this painting it begged to be painted on this shade of this paper, knowing I’d be able to use that ambient texture to enhance the feel of the prairie grass.

This painting is larger than my usual and was actually difficult to paint because my easel at that time was quite small. Framing was another issue—I looked everywhere for the frame that would coordinate in style as well as color, and be able to support a painting that large with mats and glass and ended up with a custom-ordered 4″ wide solid wood rounded profile with a faux calfskin finish, an expense I never undertake except for this one painting. The mats are black core in a tone of orange that exactly match the mid-range tones of the painting. I still look at this painting and love every bit of it and am glad I followed my star to make it what it is.

FRAMED ORIGINAL

The original pastel painting is currently matted with two tones of deep orange black-core mats, and framed with a 4″ wide solid wood rounded profile with a faux calfskin finish.

What can you say about gulls that is unique, since this is pretty much what they do all day? I’ve done a few other gull paintings and intend to do a few more, but unless I start numbering them I have to find something about this gull, “[Adjective] Gull”, that will make this painting different from the others. At least to me.

Last year at this time I was in Savannah, Georgia, delivering two rescued and well-socialized kittens to my niece and great niece and nephews. My niece and I spent an afternoon enjoying the beach, me for the first time in about 30 years, and doubly wonderful in January having left a moderate snowfall and very cold temperatures behind in Pennsylvania.

I took more photos of gulls and waves than anyone should have taken though I tried to be more restrained. Still, I’m glad I did, as I have this particular gull standing in exactly the same spot but with head turned in different directions, from different angles, and with different levels of reflection on the water. So, now, when I have finally found the time to do a few sketches and paintings from last year’s photos, I can sort through my gull photos and find exactly the right one, the tide washing back down the beach at an angle, the gull’s reflection broken up in a clear and interesting pattern, the blue of the reflected sky gradating from light to dark.

I liked the uncropped version too. Sometimes I like the rough edges on a sketch.

I have no idea why I chose to tackle this one today, except that after working on the water in yesterday’s little painting of a gull, the visualization I’ve had to do this painting for the past five years just took over my visual thoughts.

The reference photo was taken on a bright January day with lots of snow cover, and the mallards floating on Chartiers Creek where it flows under Main Street on my walk to the bank and post office. The water is shallow there, and with the noonday sun shining right down on it with no shade from trees, the water is filled with light as well as the sky reflecting down onto the surface and light reflecting in various shapes and colors onto every little ripple. It was beautiful to look at, but darned complicated to piece together the interaction of light in the water and on the water and reflections on the surface. I was determined to keep it loose because I didn’t want to contain the movement of the water with unmoving edges.

I named it “Sparkling Gems” because the water is so sparkling and clear like aquamarine, emerald, jade, peridot, tourmaline, malachite, turquoise, while the mallards are like the deeper gems, ruby, garnet, sapphire, lapis, adventurine, agate, and all so beautiful after a few days of cold and snow.

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered because I have limited storage space. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting. This canvas mirrors the edges of the image around the sides.

FRAMED PRINTS

I do all my own framing and can custom frame a print for you. Please ask.

I participated in Leslie Saeta’s annual “30 in 30” painting challenge in January 2017. This was my painting for day 20.

The day was gray, misty and quiet, just the day to spot a large crow perched atop a dead tree. I was transfixed by its stillness, unmoving, against the gray sky, took a photo, and then it crouched down, lifted its wings and lifted itself heavily from the tree, moving upward and away slowly, on deep, slow flaps of its wings. I left a large expanse of gray because, while perched in the tree the a closeup worked well, once it was airborne the huge gray sky was part of the composition.

This painting is entitled “Safe”, 15″ x 20″ , done in soft pastel on Strathmore pastel paper.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Though they nibble on some of my favorite foods and flowers that grow in my back yard, I enjoy observing the two does who have visited for the past three years, sometimes with their boyfriend and sometimes with a fawn. When I came outdoors they would often leave my vegetable garden and scurry through my woodland garden to the overgrown area between all our yards. Though they were in plain sight of about six houses and all of us watched them, they apparently felt they were safe—and they were, really, because when I looked at the reference photo for this I wondered why I’d taken a photo of the brush at the end of the yard, and then I saw the ears. It was the perfect cover, hidden in plain sight.

“Safe” is painted in various pastels on Strathmore pastel paper from my photo references. This work was one of my new paintings for the 2015 Wings & Wildlife Art Show at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh.

This drawing is entitled Biding Time, 15″ x 21″ , done in pencil on cold press illustration board. The original is sold, but prints are available.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

What do doves do all day? Just kind of hang out waiting for something to happen? The doves always seem to have some purpose beyond just sitting there, but sit they will for hours, moving only slightly, perhaps waiting for friends to join them.

These doves are waiting in the maple tree outside my bedroom window, a scene I often see and always enjoy.

The branches of the ancient maple tree vary in texture and even color, the larger branches and trunk carrying old gnarled scars from years of storms; this tree has been my guardian since I moved into this house. The details of the branches and twigs were so inspiring to me and I visualized a large, detailed pencil drawing, even imagining my pencil drawing the darker edges, blending the smooth areas and sketching detail in the rough areas to create the shadows.

Still, it was the doves who led me to the beauty of the scene and it was only a matter of time and lots of reference photos before I decided exactly which one I wanted to draw.

The scene I finally chose to draw was a bright overcast day when a snowfall had melted from the branches, leaving them a little wet and more colorful than usual with the little bits of moss that collect on the undersides, and the shadows are muted and soft.

I chose to create this drawing in pencil for the simple clarity of line and the delicacy of shadow. Pencil was my first medium and one I return to regularly with a comforting familiarity, losing myself in the variety of lines and textures a simple graphite pencil can achieve, and so it was with this drawing.

I added very slight watercolor washes to show the bird’s breast tarnish and the contrast of blue on the upper feathers, and the slight gather of moss on the tree branch. Loving the pencil, I still wanted to give the birds and branches dimension against the flat white background. Well I remember my hesitance with the first washes of color, holding the brush, filled with paint, away from the sketch, afraid to begin for fear either my idea of adding color wouldn’t be successful or I would simply screw up this pencil drawing I’d spent three weeks drawing. Eventually, I got over it, and it worked out just as I had visualized.

FRAMED PRINTS

The original drawing was 21″ wide x 15″ high, matted with a 4″ tan acid-free mat with 1/8″ charcoal acid-free mat, framed with a 1″ burnished gold metal frame with silver inner edge and nailhead detail, and I would be happy to frame a print in that same combination.

I also have a full-size print in an 18 x 4 matte black frame with a parchment mat, shown above.

I have also shown a sample of an 8 x 10 print matted in an 11 x 14 frame, shown above.

This painting is entitled “Colorful”, 11″ x 15″, done in soft pastel on self-prepared board with marble dust and gesso.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work was one of my new paintings for the 2015 Wings & Wildlife Art Show at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. “Colorful” is one of my favorite duck images on Chartiers Creek from my walks to Main Street. I took the photo several years ago of the mallard balancing on one leg with morning sun reflecting brightly off off an orange brick building on the other bank of the creek as well as the blue winter sky. Winter can be drab in moments, but it is often quite colorful with the warm browns and reds and the cool deep green of the mallard’s feathers and the reflections of all the colors of the day on the gently rippling water. Alas, though I had wanted to paint it en plein air, neither the ducks nor the lighting were cooperative so I finally decided to rough in a background and shapes on site, but finish it from the photo.

FRAMED ORIGINAL

The original is framed with a 2.5″ white acid-free mat and a 1″ vintage repurposed gold frame with very decorative corners. Nothing but gold pulled the richness of the colors in the water.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

These birds were actually pecking around in the snow under a bird feeder, but their random order and little shadows were intriguing. This was done en plein air—but not outside so I wouldn’t cause the birds to fly off.

I also cropped a 6″ x 6″ area with just the birds to coordinate with other square art I’d been producing at the time. and offer prints that size. You’ll find them here in my Wildlife gallery.

Giclee is the highest quality print available because the technique uses a dozen or more ink ports to capture all the nuances of the original painting, including details of the texture, far more sensitive than any other printing medium. Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames. The giclees have 2″ of white around the outside edges.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original.

The 5″ x 7″ and 8″ x 10″ digital prints are centered on 8.5″ x 11″ digital cover while the 11″ x 14″ has 1″ around the edges because the digital paper is 12″ wide. All are countersigned by me.

CANVAS PRINTS

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered here because customers often want a custom size. Smaller canvases are a 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting. This canvas is white on the sides.

FRAMED PRINTS

I have one framed 9″ x 12″ digital print of this art, no mat, and a blue painted barnwood wood frame.

GREETING CARD

Cards are 5 x 7 printed on 14 pt. C1S, blank inside and available with a matching envelope.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Cardinals brighten my back yard all year round, and are especially brilliant on a snowy day. My back yard is a registered Backyard Wildlife Habitat and I have let brush and brambles fill in at the corners; this cardinal is in a tangle of wild grapevines with a fresh fall of snow. This was done en plein air—but not outside so I wouldn’t cause the birds to fly off, but from my back door.

The original  larger painting was part of my exhibit “Winter White”. I also offer this art as a card in my “Backyard Birds” series.

Shipping within the US is included in all the prices listed. All shipping is via Priority Mail. Prints are shipped flat in a rigid envelope. Canvases are shipped in a box to fit with padding. Since this original is small it is also shipped in a box with extra padding.
