Feline Photos Greeting Cards

Photo cards come in two sizes: 5″ x 7″ and 5″ x 5″, blank inside and printed on 14 pt. card stock with a choice of either opaque white envelopes or a color as described in each listing. On the back is the story of the photo. Single cards are mailed first class in an envelope, half dozens and dozens are packed in a clear-top white cardboard greeting card box. Cards can be customized with your message.

With as many cat photos as I have one would think I’d have several hundred Feline Photos Greeting Cards, but it’s really that sheer number that keeps me from making cards out of all my favorite photos and everyone else’s too. It was for precisely this reason that I experimented with different printing papers on my trusty Epson printer and decided that I’d start offering custom printed cards individually.

To now all but the fully handmade cards have been commercially printed, but with the introduction of this website I am offering custom printed cards, which works wonderfully with my choice of photo images. Below are the cards I already have printed, plus a few sets of photo cards that you can purchase individually, and then a gallery of images to choose from for a custom single or quantity of cards printed just for you (please understand some areas and galleries are still “under construction). One of the ways I’ve chosen which cards to have printed as greeting card is to see if an image is popular, and I’ll have them printed so they are always available.

Use them for all-purpose greeting cards, sympathy, thinking of you, friendship, or find some stylish frames frame them for your walls.

Custom Dozen of Photo Cards

If you’d like to purchase a custom dozen of photo cards, choose this item, then look over the selection and list the names and quantities of the designs you want in the box provided. You can also include 5″ x 7″ cards from other pages as well, like Feline Fine Art Cards, Animal Sympathy Cards, Inspired by Flowers Cards and In the Garden Fine Art Cards.

A Sunny Room

This photograph was taken in 1983, when I first got my camera and began photographing with black and white film. Kublai, the kitty who rescued me in college and truly began my life as an animal artist, was only about two years old.

About the artwork

A Sunny Room

A Sunny Roomunny

In addition to simply him, Kublai’s personality, the tall hips and long hind legs, waving tail, round face and bold bearing, I also photographed for the light, bright, airy feeling of this spacious room in an apartment in a huge Victorian house, and specifics of the scene—the waterfall of the starched and ironed (by me) cotton batiste curtain across the window and falling on the sill diffusing the light, the leafy plant which is almost more of a subject than the cat, and even the fact that it has an antique appearance though it’s not old, just black and white but developed in a color machine.

Namir's "bedroom eyes".

The Way You Looked at Me, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

About the artwork

(Framed photo of Mimi just a sample.)

Namir turns his gaze up to me, enchanting me with his “bedroom eyes” as we spend a morning in the garden. To visitors and to me, once he is sure he has you under his spell he turns on those famous bedroom eyes, narrowing them just enough so they looked mysteriously slanted and angling up a tourmaline glance, as if sharing a secret, looking totally exotic (he thinks), purring joyfully, certain you belong to him completely.

I’ll always remember the way you looked at me.” It was so much a part of “us” that I designed a sympathy card with the photo.

This photo was taken May 22, 2009. We lost Namir on July 1, 2009. He was the inspiration for my sympathy cards and my blog, The Creative Cat. Who could resist those eyes?

SHIPPING AND CHARGES

Shipping is included in the cost of each print.

Prints up to 16″ x 20″ are shipped flat in a rigid envelope. Larger prints are shipped rolled in a mailing tube unless otherwise requested; flat shipping is an extra cost because it’s oversized.

FRAMED PRINTS

Print are framed with a white acid-free mat and a 1.25″ matte black solid wood frame. I do the framing in my studio.

GICLEE PRINTS

The giclees are printed on acid-free hot press art paper for a smooth matte finish using archival inks. Giclee is the highest quality print available because the technique uses a dozen or more ink ports to capture all the nuances of the original painting, including details of the texture, far more sensitive than any other printing medium. Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off of each side.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered here because customers often want a custom size. Smaller canvases are 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. On these prints the image wraps around the edges.

I sign all prints next to my original signature.

GREETING CARDS

Greeting cards are printed on 12 pt, stock, coated outside, uncoated inside, and come with a choice of envelopes.

  • Feline Photo Cards assort with all other 5″ x 7″ greeting cards (except custom printed cards) for a quantity discount.
  • Individual cards are shipped by first class mail.
  • Sets of six and twelve are packed in a clear-top stationery box. Price includes shipping.

Sienna, Office Cat

Office Cat Watches you, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

About the artwork

Sienna, Office Cat

Sienna, Office Cat

Office cat says I need to sit down and get to work. And that work is providing a lap for her. My that Sienna is getting bold, and what a talented model too, providing us all with this unique photo!

I walked in the door and, as always, glanced around the room to locate all the cats who were there. Sweeping around past the desk I saw just this. What a photo! But I had no device at all handy, and if I walked too close to Sienna to get my smartphone she would get up and want pets. But I wanted the photo. My DSLR was closer and she actually stayed there while I got it ready with the zoom lens though I expected her to be curious and come over. She looked right at me when I called her name and took two quick shots…and then she got up. But I got the photo.

Sienna loves my desk and waits for me to come to work there, plus, in these extended warm days, she has two large open windows and a nice cross breeze. Such a nice kitty!

September Morning in the Garden

September Morning in the Garden, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

About the artwork

(Framed photo of Mimi just a sample.)

What’s not to love? A tangled happy garden, a sleepy happy cat, lots of color and detail and sunlight.

My garden kitty, Moses, enjoys her morning nap on the bricks in the shade of the beans, mid-morning in September. I’m fairly certain I took this in the late 90s, but it stands in for any sunny morning Moses and I enjoyed in the garden. Remembering Cookie and Namir this morning while Mimi and Mewsette and I were out hanging laundry (well, I was hanging laundry), I thought I’d bring out this photo. I think of all the cats who shared my garden, and the fact that Mimi and Moses were probably acquainted from Mimi visiting the garden and patio when the basement door was open, though they never lived in the house together.

Stripes on Stripe

Stripes on Stripe, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

About the artwork

One of my favorite photos of Stanley from August 2006, it was his last summer with me, he was about 24 years old, needing a little supportive care but still enjoying his time outdoors with me and every moment of every day besides that.

Sunshine and fresh air is a perfect tonic for an old cat. We were keeping the chronic renal failure at bay with doses of subcutaneous fluids, enticing foods, and a morning visit to the back yard and a nap on the deck every day the weather permitted. Stanley forgot all about feeling a little queasy and tired as he pranced around the back yard from bush to tree to post, smelling the messages—downloading his “pee-mail” and uploading his reply, as I always called it. Back up on the deck, a little bath and quick nap in the sun, then inside to eat ravenously as if nothing was the matter.

I have decades of memories of Stanley; he came to me several years into adulthood and lived with me for 21 years, suffering from chronic urinary issues for which he had obviously been violently punished. A sweet, silly, friendly kitty underneath it all, it took years to wear down the aftereffects of Stanley’s early abuse. But he appears in many, many images, including my painting, “After Dinner Nap”, which inspired many commissioned portraits, but before that it inspired me to find a way to share my feline inspirations with the world. Thank you, Stanley.

This photo doesn’t show you much about Stanley, but for me it is a reminder of how my cats have inspired me at every moment since I’ve lived with them, training me to keep my eyes open and always be ready for that unique image, keeping my creative spirit alive and my creative intellect in top condition, in a way living two lives at once, to live the moment, and to record the moment.

I often called Stanley “Stripe” because he was a tabby, and in this photo the confluence of all those stripes was just breathtaking. Straight geometric stripes in the shadows from my deck rail coming in at an obtuse and unsettled angle, the deck boards themselves and the gaps between at a normal and comforting angle, and striped Stanley breaking all the straight lines as he curled in a perfect circle for a nap; I could never have posed this or composed this, but what a moment to remember. And if Stanley had not been there I probably would have noticed the shadows as I was working in the garden but not taken the photo, probably busy harvesting green beans or tomatoes, so I have him to thank for this moment.

Mimi, Reading My Mind, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

About the artwork

Mimi, Reading My Mind

Mimi knew exactly the pose I had visualized, and here she is, as beautiful as I had imagined.

Many of us joke that our animal companions can read our minds. In a very real way they can with their understanding of body language, and use of their senses to anticipate emotions by our scent if it’s fear or anger or another state of the human mind that puts us a bath of hormones.

But without the same language as us can they truly understand our thoughts? And respond appropriately? And communicate in return?

I tend to think in pictures, sometimes seeing images of the concepts I’m considering instead of putting words to thoughts, and I also visualize a lot. All the time. I’m always framing photos and visualizing a finished painting or sketch even if I have no intention of following through; it’s the background of every moment for me.

I had set up my little desk with flowers to be pretty, then thought how purr-fect it would be if Mimi was there and settled right in front of the chair, a wonderful composition with the flowers and lamp, maybe sitting up, maybe lying down, in the way that she often goes to where I will be working and settles down as if to tell me, “You need to get to work now.”

So I set her down on the table and figured she would do what she wanted and I would photograph it. She walked around a bit and enjoyed her pets and seemed to be settling in so I went to get my camera and get in position before she grew accustomed to me being there with her. As soon as I turned around, in order…

There were many more, but these four were exactly four of the poses I had visualized.

The Eyes Have It, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

About the artwork

The Eyes Have It

The Eyes Have It

The eyes really have it! It’s the most extraordinary thing about black cats, the way their eyes just glow against their fur, no matter what color their eyes happen to be. And Bella has those round eyes in that round face, and if that wasn’t enough she was sitting with her tail curved just so. I did all I could to have her look directly up at me without standing up, and I got my wish. Though formerly feral, Bella is a very talented feline model!

I took this photo with my smartphone and originally filtered it with my phone and Instagram, but to ensure the print quality I refiltered it in Photoshop.

SQUARE CARD

I knew from the moment I took this photo that I’d offer it as a square card.

Square greeting cards are printed on 12 pt, matte stock and come with a white envelope.

  • Card is blank inside but can be customized with your message for an extra charge.
  • Individual cards are shipped by first class mail.
  • Sets of six and twelve are packed in a clear-top stationery box.

Kelly in forget-me-nots

Kelly in Forget-me-nots, Feline Photo, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

About the artwork

Kelly in forget-me-nots

Kelly in forget-me-nots

Kelly had been stepping out into the back yard with me now and then, even asking at the door to go out. She’d never shown any interest in the 15 years she’d been with me until the spring we lost Cookie, and I couldn’t help but think she associated the outdoors, and the spring forget-me-nots, with Cookie, as I did. Kelly was now the lone senior cat, and she was very lonely without an older kitty to cuddle with and protect her; she was a little intimidated by the gregarious black cats.

This is a kind of an odd angle—I had my zoom lens as I’d been photographing details of forget-me-nots and buttercups together and the cranesbill geraniums and columbines with raindrops from last night’s storms. Kelly’s a little foreshortened, but it’s a good view of her face and those brilliant green eyes; even without the reflection of lush vegetation, Kelly’s eyes are like gems, though the reflected greenness is giving them an extra touch here. It’s hard to believe she was 19 that year because she was still active, lithe and graceful, and because she was the youngest for 11 years I still thought of her as the little one.

Mimi in Buttercups and Forget-me-nots

Mimi in Buttercups and Forget-me-nots, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

About the artwork

Mimi in Buttercups and Forget-me-nots

Mimi in Buttercups and Forget-me-nots

Mimi is never so happy as when she’s out in the yard, as you can see by her “happy tail”. She’s so short that I can’t get a good photo of her face without flowers in the way, but perhaps that’s how she wants it.

I keep a breakaway bell collar on her all the time even in the house—I like the happy little sound and I can always keep track of her, and she seems to like it to since it means we’ll be going out in the yard again some time. When she hasn’t been outside often enough, she takes it off, usually when she’s in the room with me, and looks at me. Mimi knows how to make a statement.

When we go out, she wears that as well as another nylon collar to which I attach a long leash. She wasn’t too keen on this at first; after all, my yard was her hunting ground when she was raising babies outdoors and she looks at me as if I’m out of my mind—get real, human, I know this yard better than you. But she puts up with it and my silly human fears about her potentially disappearing forever. I may hold the end of the leash or stand on the end of it if my hands are occupied, or I may let it trail along behind her. In any case, we’re getting accustomed to this. Cookie, Stanley, Moses, Sally, Kublai never needed a leash, but Namir did at first, and after a while he understood and stayed with me and Cookie.

She does enjoy being a model, though.

Feline Fine Art Cards.

This line of Feline Greeting Cards is 5″ x 7″ , printed on 12 pt. card stock and includes matching envelopes for each card, packed in a clear-top white cardboard greeting card box. Cards are blank inside.

I find people use these cards for all sorts of greetings, from invitations to parties to friendly hellos and thinking of yous to sympathy at the loss of a pet or even a person. Others have taken their favorites and slipped them into 5″ x 7″ frames for their wall.

  • Cards are also available individually for custom quantities or sets.
  • Cards are blank inside but can be customized with your message for an extra charge.
  • Feline Fine Art Cards assort with all other 5″ x 7″ greeting cards (except custom printed cards) for a quantity discount.
  • Price includes shipping via Priority Mail.

About the Artwork

These greeting cards are created from paintings of the cats with whom I’ve had the pleasure of sharing my life—and that includes a few friends’ cats as well. It was through observing their feline grace and their individual natures that I found my muse as an artist and finally decided to get down on paper what I saw with my eyes and felt with my heart. There’s a story behind each one.

I’ve included a mix of pastel and watercolor and a mix of styles, from realistic detail to loose impressionistic scenes so you have a choice for all occasions. Cards have only the image on the front, are blank inside, and carry the title of the painting and information about it on the back, you can write inside it whatever you want. Some people purchase them to frame as little prints as well.

While I render many other subjects now it all began with my cats and the hopeless affection I felt for each of them and all their moods and quirks and manners of affection toward me. This is the gift they gave to me, and I will be forever in their debt, spending a lifetime to pay it off by sharing them with others.

This is the original set of 12. I’ve created a few other cards since I put together this first set and you’ll see them as singles you can assort for your own custom set here.

Jelly Bean enjoys being washed in spring sunlight as I enjoy how the pattern of the window muntins falls across the wall, the sink and him. What you can’t hear in this photo is Jelly Bean’s loud, vigorous purr as it echoes in the sink, truly an amazing percussive technique.

About the artwork

Who knew that vintage mint green sink would photograph in such a rich tone, especially when filled with a black cat? From the time I installed the new bathroom, the black cats owned it and the contrast of their black fur with the mint green fixtures and white walls and floor has been stunning and created some of the most favorite photos in my cat collection.

This card is one of four designs in the set “Compositions in Black and Green”. This very photo was the inspiration for this series of greeting cards, and the calendar of the same name, giving me a focus for the whole series of images. I loved the look of this image as soon as I saw Jelly Bean quietly resting on the edge of the sink, all its shades of green lit by the spring sunlight, Bean’s pleasantly rounded shape contrasting with geometric shadows of the window frame and muntins, and even before I photographed it the idea of a series of photos on this theme was born, including even the name. I already had a number of photos in the theme of black and green and knew I’d get more, and even to this day I am photographing more “compositions in black and green”.

The set includes two familiar images, but really focuses on one kitty—Jelly Bean! “Gosh, I’m Cute” pictures Jelly Bean admiring himself in the mirror long offered as a greeting card, and “Have a Drink With Family” shows the Fantastic Four all drinking from the sink faucet at the same time. The new designs are “Composition in Green and Black”, offered by request but one of my favorite atmospheric images of Jelly Bean dozing in the sun on the edge of the sink, and “Toe Cleaning in Green and Black”, the Bean once again in a close-up capture of activity with the mint green sink reflecting on Bean’s black fur and paws. On the back is the story of the photo.

A kitty having a bath in the sink is not terribly noteworthy, but in 2009 I was still discovering the magic of black and green and the green reflection of the sink on Jelly Bean’s fur and especially his toe pads, was enchanting, and I also like this photo for its somewhat abstract quality.

About the artwork

“Of the Rain and Giuseppe” is one of a series of photos I took of Giuseppe looking out the window at the rain and have always thought they’d be able to convey a variety of messages as photo cards, each of which can be found in my Feline Photo Greeting Cards gallery, and also attractive photo prints, which you can also find in my Cat Photos and Black and White galleries.

I could hardly pass up the mood and the composition, chose six of all the photos I’d taken, decided they’d look best in black and white and set them up as a photo short story on The Creative Cat in Of the Rain and Giuseppe. Giuseppe often gazes out “the big north window” dreaming in eloquent and sometimes lyrical terms of his precious French-Canadian Mlle. Daisy Emerald Marguerite who lives up the hill in faraway Canada, and who in real life is kept safe and loved by a friend in Hamilton. She and I enjoy composing messages back and forth in very purple Victorian prose, I enjoy the exercises in writing in a different style and subject matter, and we all have a great laugh, except Giuseppe who is a little insecure.

I think a card should look special when it arrives, but not with something that announces grief and sympathy. A simple colored envelope will do, and I offer colored envelopes with most of my sympathy cards. While I’d really prefer just a plain pale silver gray envelope to complement the black and white photo in addition to standard white, the gently threaded pattern of the “Granite Recycled” envelope coordinates well with the gentle shadows in the photo.

Watching the World

“Watching the World, Photo” prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas.

About the artwork

We all love my studio window, a big, old, battered metal-framed casement about 4′ x 4′ on the second floor looking out at the spruce, maple and river birch in the front of our house. I call it the “tree house” as we watch the weather and light change and spend time with all the tree-dwellers in the neighborhood above the street. Giuseppe was watching Mr. Cardinal singing his spring song on this particular afternoon and I watched the light and images reflect on his eye and admiring his profile.

I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting.

I sign all prints next to my original signature.

Three Seriously Cute Housepanthers in a Basket

“Three Seriously Cute Housepantherso” prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas.

About the artwork

These three really have to stop this sort of thing. I have work to do and I can’t be distracted by such serious cuteness. Mimi, Sunshine, Jelly Bean.

Mimi looks miffed, possibly because of the snow (see below), Mr. Sunshine looks like he’s making a face by sticking out his tongue (he and Bean had been giving Mimi a big bath), and Bean just looks like he’s there and he’s cute and nothing more is needed.

This was one of the more popular photos I’ve ever posted on Instagram and Facebook. Guess that means I ought to offer it as a print! I’ll see if the quality level is high enough because I took it with my phone.

Late in the Year

Late in the Year, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

[ss_product id=’6a374c40-0ac5-11e7-b2d9-002590787d08′ ]Feline Photo, Late in the Year[/ss_product]

About the artwork

This is my little formerly feral kitty, Moses. It is “late in the year”, as the photo is titled from November 2005, at age 19 it was also late in her life, using a year as a metaphor.

“Portrait of a senior kitty”…this is a favorite of my black and white photos. Aside from a strict adherence to twice-daily mealtimes, her one and only absolute necessity was a sunbath, preferrably al fresco, every day to help soothe the arthritis that had built in her somewhat hobbled hind legs.

I took this photo during the last warm day in November, just three months before she died. Some viewers have told me they have a difficult time piecing the image together because her features are distorted by age, her eyes set deep, her cheekbones sunken, nose slightly flattened by dehydration and ear tips curved as the skin on those extremities begins to wither, but I knew every hair, every feature. And those who’ve loved a cat into this era of their life can see the details right away.

This image of Moses was so meaningful because others recognized their felines in in that I chose her as one of my animal sympathy cards. See the whole set.

About the artwork

Bella's Basket of Dreams

Bella’s Basket of Dreams

Bella spends some time in the basket almost every day, and I can hardly pass up the opportunity to photograph her. How could I pass up such beauty? I’m fairly certain she knows the effect she has on me, judging by the purr-fect poses she finds.

I took this photo with my smartphone and originally filtered it with my phone and Instagram, but to ensure the print quality I refiltered it in Photoshop.

About the artwork

Surprise!

Surprise!

Basil must have thought the yellow basket was a gift for him because he owned it from the day it came into the house, which was the day I was running errands and saw it…atop someone’s trash pile. I sprayed it down and rinsed it in the basement and let it air dry, then brought it up to the magic basket spot, and Basil was immediately IN THE BASKET, looking totally cute, big, long, white whisker and all.

But especially his glowing amber eyes! We had some glowing sunny days and I hardly photographed anything but Basil and his amber eyes in the basket including the one I’d first seen of him with his round eyes looking over the edge of the basket.

Tortie Camouflage, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

About the artwork

(Framed photo of Mimi just a sample.)

Tortoiseshell cats can be camouflaged against many backgrounds with all their irregular speckles and dots. This photo of Cookie taken in the spring of 2010 truly shows her ability to blend into her background as her orange and tan blend with last year’s leaves and her green eyes blend with the spring’s new growth. I could not love her more.

Friendship Friday

tortoiseshell cat looking out window

Kelly Birdwatching, Feline Photo, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

About the artwork

tortoiseshell cat looking out window

Kelly Birdwatching

Little Kelly intently watching a bird just outside the window, so intently that she paid no attention to me at all, a photo taken with film in the year 2000. This casement window, the one that’s still at the top of the stairs, has a protruding hinge at the top and bottom corners, just right for a mourning dove to catch some warmth from the rising sun just as Kelly was while sitting on the windowsill on a cold February morning. She sat and patiently watched that dove, and others at other times, for whole minutes at a sitting, a real achievement for a busy kitty like Kelly. She had been with us four years but could still be a little nervous of me with my camera because I stared at her with it, and that might make any cat nervous, but especially a formerly feral kitty.

In that day, and in this, I felt this caught little Kelly pretty well, petite, guileless, intent, just a sweet little cat. I liked it so much that I sold framed prints of it and donated them to shelter auctions too, where Kelly was pretty popular with people who had cats who also did just what Kelly was doing. In fact, I still have framed prints of it in my display when I’m at an animal event, and here in the house, and when I built the new website, I added Kelly here too.

Cookie With Daffodils

Cookie With Daffodils, Feline Photo prints are made in archival inks on Epson Silky Photo Paper, Cold Press Digital Giclee Paper or Artist Canvas and available framed and unframed.

About the artwork

Cookie With Daffodils

Cookie With Daffodils

From several years ago, one of those mornings, I think Cookie is watching Namir. I like the odd angle, the blur and the crop. It’s as if I’m standing right there with Cookie, looking over her ear as I often did.

Because Cookie was outdoors with me for so many years and loved the spring garden especially I have many photos of her in the daffodils. We went outdoors every morning, and as the sun began rising earlier I started working outdoors for a little bit each day though I still did most of the garden readiness on the weekends until May.

Sophie Keeps an Eye on things

No text on the front.

Sophie was always in one of the windows when I left and when I returned, and she always managed to use the curtains to dramatic advantage. This is one of my fondest memories of her, nestled in the creamy lace with the spring-blooming forget-me-nots in the windowbox.

About the artwork

The forget-me-nots are beginning to bloom as they grow taller more quickly, an inch or two each day, in the pots in the windowbox under my dining room window. Each year when I transplant them from the yard and put the pots in place I remember Sophie and this particular beautiful moment in 2005—May 4, 2005 to be exact. It was Sophie’s year to pose in forget-me-nots and I have so many from the first two weeks of May, but of all of them, this is my favorite.

And it’s not just a favorite of that series of Sophie in the forget-me-nots, but of all my photos to date, and a treasured memory.

Sophie always watched me leave the house, and in the evenings I closed my curtains before I left. She also like to play around with the curtain—often I had to inspect the lace to see her white fur through the mesh, or she dramatically appeared from between the panels, around the edge or underneath, but she was always there with her big round eyes.

On this day, in the late afternoon, the warm spring sun angled into the window imparting a creamy tone to the lace, and the forget-me-nots I’d planted in pots in the windowbox were in full flower. Before I left I closed the curtains because I’d be gone after dark, and Sophie began her little game while I was still indoors, so I stopped and captured a few images of her silhouetted and peering through the curtain at me.

A Sunny Room

This photograph was taken in 1983, when I first got my camera and began photographing with black and white film. Kublai, the kitty who rescued me in college and truly began my life as an animal artist, was only about two years old.

About the artwork

In addition to simply him, Kublai’s personality, the tall hips and long hind legs, waving tail, round face and bold bearing, I also photographed for the light, bright, airy feeling of this spacious room in an apartment in a huge Victorian house, and specifics of the scene—the waterfall of the starched and ironed (by me) cotton batiste curtain across the window and falling on the sill diffusing the light, the leafy plant which is almost more of a subject than the cat, and even the fact that it has an antique appearance though it’s not old, just black and white but developed in a color machine.

No text on the front.

“My Old Man”, a sleepy Stanley, on the rocker, on the deck, in the sun, in late summer of his last year with me, 2006. He was with me for 21 years and came to me well into adulthood, so my best guess is that he was 24 here; he passed the following January but enjoyed his time outdoors until December, demanding to visit the yard and download his pee-mail every day, sometimes before he had breakfast, but before his frequent dose of sub-cutaneous fluids for his chronic kidney failure and morning nap.

About the artwork

The scene for this is my deck, which you’ve seen in so many other photos of my cats, though typically in color for the brilliance of the turquoise rocker Stanley sleeps on, and the pinks and purples of the flowers and green of the herbs I always grow in pots.

It has always made me think of summer, of morning, and old memories.

I also think it should look special when it arrives, but not with something that announces grief and sympathy.

About the artwork

This photo has a popularity of its own—what are the chances I’d catch Bean at his toilette? In fact, the very old bathroom was being renovated after a disaster involving all those leaky things. The four black kittens had been fostered in that room and just presumed you were supposed to drink from leaky faucets because it was so fun. They were in there immediately as soon as it was safe, Jelly Bean sitting in a completely new vintage sink in a different spot, waiting for the salvaged faucet to drip. And admiring himself in my temporary mirror.

Especially if you’re the Parched Puddies having your daily drink in the mint green sink and the drink is water!

About the artwork

It’s Giuseppe, Jelly Bean, Mr. Sunshine and Mewsette, who were fostered in the “old” bathroom, before it was remodeled, and everything leaked. They grew up assuming you could drink out of any faucet, and still, years later, gather in the bathroom sink in twos, threes and fours, asking for a drink. I feature this photo each year at St. Patrick’s Day, though neither they nor I are Irish.

Mewsette in the Mirror.

Mewsette settles here every day after breakfast, quietly reflecting in the sun, a space of beauty in the brilliant yellow morning light, in the old cream lace curtain, the very old and slightly clouded, pitted mirror in its round antique gold frame, the time-worn wood of the wardrobe, and contemplative Mewsette, soft and rounded in her thoughts.

About the artwork

The photos in “Victoriana Cats” may look antique and sepia-toned, they are neither. My cats are perfect models and knew to pose in the bright yellow morning sun in front of my round antique mirror and the narrow casement window with the lace curtain. I applied a few Photoshop filters to the original photos to make them consistent in tone and style. On the back is the story of the photo.

Use them for all-purpose greeting cards, sympathy, thinking of you, friendship, or find some shabby chic frames for 5″ x 7″ images and frame them for your walls.

Mimi in the Mirror

Mimi, pensive at the morning window, reflected in the mirror, reflecting. The mirror is very old and slightly clouded, pitted here and there; I intentionally blurred the reflection, Mimi softened, the window and curtain rippled by the old glass, the mirror is real, but what is in it is memory, influenced by the medium itself. I’m sure rescued Mimi has many memories to reflect upon in the warm sun of a spring morning.

Sunrise

Giuseppe watches the yard, Jelly Bean soaks in the sun at the upstairs window facing east. Sunny early spring mornings are intoxicating for all of us. We all pause when we find ourselves in a sunny spot and simply appreciate the gift of the sun’s warmth and the promise of more beautiful days to come. The rounded mirror in the background brings to mind the rising of the sun over the horizon.

I know their thoughts are filled with beauty, to countenance an expression such as that. Mewsette has always been the dreamy member of the family, kind of like me; we can be together for long periods of time, just looking out the window, or watching shadows move across the floor.
