So was the trail wandering in the snow or was I? Or both of us, me following the trail’s example, though I did step off the trail plenty of times.

Today the temperature hit 50 degrees, and the thermometer on my deck actually read 60 degrees for a while, though I could tell when I stepped out that was just some extra heat trapped under the deck roof. I’d been wanting to get to the trail since this deep and lasting snow fell, for a walk and for some photos and new artwork if I could. I wanted some sun and I got it today.

After our big 10-12″ snowfall 10 days ago there’s still plenty around. Temperatures were below freezing for 18 days, some of those days before, the rest after the snowfall, so the snow has been around quite some time. I’m not complaining. I love snow, I don’t have to commute to work and have no pressing errands and I could take some time to shovel out and take photos in my own back yard.

The place for the painting

I knew just where I wanted to paint, standing in a spot where I could see blue shadows on the north-facing slops in the valley along the Panhandle Trail with bright sun on this little side trail and the details of trees and understory plants in those conditions.

So I took off at 2:00 p.m., back at 5:00. Snow cover lingers though about half is melted away, trails are mostly snow covered but pretty slushy with some icy places. Not really easy going but I wasn’t concerned. I wanted to catch that bright sun as it started to descend to the horizon. And so I did!

I worked on it in the woods for about an hour and a half then brought it home and worked on it in my studio for about another hour, finishing up around the edges. I don’t have it listed yet, but if you can’t do without it just let me know. I may still do some touchups.
