Tote Bags

I screen print the Purr design on canvas, add the heart embellishment, and stitch up the tote bag. Bags may vary slightly in size, but are just about 14″ x 14″.
About the artwork
I don’t know what it is I like about visual word puzzles, but I doodled them when I was younger. A couple of years ago I got a bug about the word “purr” and was determined to fit it into a cat shape. And so I did, though it took all of two years to do it.
I not only print the design on the tote bag, but I also make the bag itself because I found it easier to print and I don’t have to worry about finding the same bag so all bags are consistent. Handles are 24″ long and made of 1″ woven trim tape.
Here’s a detail of the bag and the design.

Ailurobibliophile tote bag is screen printed by me in black ink onto lightweight canvas which I construct into a tote bag. Bags may vary slightly in size, but are just about 13.5″ x 13.5″.
About the artwork
I worked out this design in late 2017 and had two variations on the typeface. I preferred the bolder typeface but ended up using the lighter typeface because I began with a stencil and it worked far better for that. But not well enough because I ended up having a screen made to screen print the bags instead of stenciling. I sent the art I’d been working with and after printing bags and prints I decided I really wanted to use the heavier typeface after all, and I like it much better!
About that word, “Ailurobibliophile”. Yes, I made it up. It popped up in my design consciousness about a decade ago when I was photographing my cats in the cat book library, on the books, in the books, napping, bathing, posing, and I held it there until I had such time to really work it out. Finally, I can let the world know about “ailurobibliophiles”!
What does it mean? Just what it says. My initial idea was just “lover of cats and books”. Then I photographed Basil August 2017…
…and knew the time had come. This was why it was to be introduced last September, back-to-school, that sort of thing.
As with all my designs, this one is based on a real cat, a cat you know, a cat just being a cat. Just after my Panhandle Trail show last August I started playing around with this photo and others I’d taken that morning at my desk. What I’d really like is to simply screen print it, but adding one more element to my studio in terms of materials and equipment and I’d be falling out the window. I decided I would be stenciling this design to start, much as I dislike stenciling more than a word or two of text, so it had to accommodate the strengths and weaknesses of stenciling. That would mean that the area “inside” a letter, for instance, needed a cutout to connect it to the greater background of the stencil or I’d end up with all the “a”s and “o”s and others filled in. It also meant that things like Basil’s eyes would need to be done separately. I can demonstrate, but I’ll leave it at that for now.
I worked up a few designs, and in doing so found more fun things to add to the text because Basil was “on” the books, and several of the books were “on” cats. Likewise with my photos of cats in the cat book library, and I was just beside myself with the possibilities. I finally managed to edit it down to three statements so I didn’t go on and on.
I settled on one design for layout and used several text variations, then chose two that would work well for stenciling. I couldn’t decide, and I especially wanted to be certain the “new” word was understandable, and the text clarified it, and nothing made anyone think overly hard so it lost its fun and whimsy. I sent it out to several trusted friends for feedback.
I preferred the heavier font. I think it balances Basil’s dark shape well. I added the little cuts into the closed letters and cut the stencil.

I create my own “fabric” swatch by printing the pattern on medium-weight cotton fabric using a commercial quality fabric transfer and my heat press to ensure even coverage, then stitch up the rest of the bag with black trim, backing and 24″ twill woven handles. Bags may vary slightly in size, but are just about 17″W x 13″H.
About the artwork
This pattern is a collage of all the kitties I’ve drawn in this same style with the above-mentioned brush pen, singles, multiples, smooth lines, sketchy lines, just a bunch of busy kitties in black on white. And if you want to add your own variations, you can get fabric markers or paints and add color yourself!

When you are a “cat person”, it seems to begin with day one and work its way all through your life to the end, with cats intertwined with everything in between. And I’ve been looking at this batik I did in sixth grade and thinking how cool it would be to batik again…Read about Smiling Ginger Kitty Batik here.

About the artwork
“Inscrutable Cats” began as an ink sketch of one of my cats, which I then took into my graphics program to colorize the art and lay out the pattern. They all look at me like this, but this is more patterned after Jelly Bean, who sat by the window atop a box so that his face and front body was entirely in a deep shadow. Resting, his eyes are slits, and sometimes he simply closes them and takes a nap, but sitting up. I looked at him and thought, “Inscrutable”, as his expression seemed to be, and actually was since I really had no idea what he might be thinking. About the artwork
This art was inspired by working in post-op at the May 25, 2014 Homeless Cat Management Team TNR clinic. I study cats all the time but it’s not too often I get to handle that many cats in one day, especially when they are still pretty much under anesthetic, aside from a few ambitious ones. Cat after cat, large and small, male and female, solid, striped spotted, I cleaned ears and checked toes and combed fur for fleas and other parasites and finished off their ear tips, applied flea treatment and in passing studied their fur and their markings.
In that state they all look pretty much the same as far as where they came from and where they will be returned, whether it’s to a human and a loving home or to a human and a parking lot where they’ll be fed and watched over by a colony caretaker, regardless of whether their paperwork says they are stray or feral or owned by a caring human, at that moment, as I always say, they are all just cats.
All the fur colors and patterns and textures, the way they felt as I handled them, each of them soft and warm and relaxed, and then later as they awoke in recovery and began to get up and bathe a little and find a comfortable spot and position in their carrier or trap, stayed with me and I envisioned this artwork as I drove home, all those cat shapes together in simple marker sketches, simple colors, clearly visual, telling the story of TNR.

About the artwork
I took the reference photo for this painting at a local greenhouse in 2013. I’ve always liked colorful gerbera daisies and their bold smiling faces. I’ve used it for a few graphic designs and decided someday I’d paint it too. So that time was now. I chose oil pastel because I’ve come to enjoy working out the flowers with layering and impasto on a rough-textured paper.
I also chose oil pastel because the tones of the colors matched the tones in the photo, and I could layer it and build up colors, then finish with working through the composition with the tip of a tool to add definition in the flowers, leaves and stems.

Such a huge variety of flowers in buckets at the market! I visit many farmer’s markets through the summer now that every community seems to have one at least once a week, to purchase what my garden is not producing. All the farmers are local and are small family farms and I enjoy meeting the people who grow my food, and who took the time to pick it and sort it and wash it and pack it the day of the market. This particular farmer had buckets and buckets of flowers and in the light from the sky all the flowers were so vibrant I couldn’t pass them up.

Just some bright orange poppies in the sun on a summer afternoon. I took photos of a neighbor’s garden and intentionally angled one of them to have the poppies grouped against a dark background with no leaves or buds and as few stems as possible, and no black centers, just a big mass of orange, and kind of abstract.

I created a silhouette from Bella and stenciled it in onto a canvas or twill bag and embellished with buttons sewn on by hand. Scroll down to see the full color selections.
Original Bella! Tote Bag with the black kitty silhouette
O.M.Geeeee! It’s Bella! On a bag with green button eyes just like her big round eyes! Bella, in silhouette, is stenciled at the bottom of a bag and with just big blue-green eyes that are two-hole buttons sewn on with black thread.
Based on one of my sketches of Bella from shortly after she arrived here simply called “Bella”, I pulled out the scan of the little painting and refined the design in Photoshop. Bella’s eyes are not yellow green, they are a cooler blue-green, and I found pretty close to a good color for her. Others don’t live in a house full of housepanthers, so I added the white, gray and ginger kitties who are her foster friends.
The original bags and the artwork and stencil, and fellow rescuer Deana modeling the first bag purchased!

Accessory Bags

I imprinted the design “Greenhouse Gerberas” onto reclaimed cotton fabric using a fabric transfer and made the 5″ x 7″ bag, adding a zipper.
I created my own “fabric” swatch by printing the pattern on fabric using a commercial quality fabric transfer and my heat press to ensure even coverage. The transfer gives the fabric a little stiffness that works well for these little bags.
I use reclaimed fabrics from cotton, linen and other non-synthetic fabrics like tablecloths, draperies, bedspreads, even clothing, so fabrics vary. I use various color zippers for this design.
About the artwork
This pattern is based on one of my floral paintings titled “Greenhouse Gerberas”. Read about the pattern here.

This pattern is based on one of my floral paintings titled “The Perfect Place”. Read about the pattern here.

I screen print the Purr design on canvas, add the heart embellishment, and stitch up the accessory bag. Bags may vary slightly in size, but are just about 5″ x 7″. White zipper closure.
About the artwork
I don’t know what it is I like about visual word puzzles, but I doodled them when I was younger. A couple of years ago I got a bug about the word “purr” and was determined to fit it into a cat shape. And so I did, though it took all of two years to do it.
The accessory bags are made of the same lightweight canvas as the tote bags. I print the design on the fabric, add the heart embellishment, then construct the bag and use a white zipper.

I make each 5 x 8 bag from reclaimed natural linen fabric, stencil my “Bella!” silhouette and embellish with buttons sewn on by hand. White zipper closure.
I chose the two most popular kitty colors to stencil these, Housepanther, the original Bella! and Ginger Kitty. They zip across the top.
You’ll find them with Tote Bags.

Purses

Market Flowers Purse design is 14″ wide x 11″ tall, printed in reclaimed damask tablecloth fabric and lined with more reclaimed tablecoth fabric. Woven 1/2″ straps wrap around the bag as handles for hand or shoulder. Bag closes with a zipper. Each bag is handmade and may vary slightly in size or materials.
About the artwork

Market Flowers bag, printed on both sides, with white tape trim handles that wrap around, zipper closure.
I use commercial-quality fabric transfers to make fabric “swatches”. Like my accessory bags and cloth placemats they are printed on reclaimed fabrics from tablecloths, curtains, and any other clean, sturdy solid-colored fabric that won’t melt in the heat press. This bag is my most favorite old damask tablecloth, now too stained to ever use, but I can make use of the clean areas and give the fabric a new life. The damask pattern shows through just enough to almost give the flowers a little dimension.
It’s also lined with a printed tablecloth that has a pale pink flowery border. I can make use of my old printed textiles, and others I can collect, in the same way. So much is thrown away, and many fabrics are not ethically produced and have environmental impacts, so why not use something that’s already here? And although I know I’ll never use those tablecloths again I have a real attachment to them, so they get another life.
