Just about every day I experience something that I need to share as I tend my garden, run my business, visit places in my hometown and beyond. Often, this includes a photograph of a wildflower in bloom in my yard, a bird I see along the trail, snow falling on Main Street, the view from a bus window as I cross the river into town.

It all started with a Pentax K1000

I purchased my first Pentax K1000 in 1983 and began photographing in black and white. I’ve been hooked ever since carrying that poor thing with me everywhere, purchasing new lenses and gadgets now and then. I never really had the time to sit down and study photography, but those years of slow, diligent experimentation and studying the results were the best way for me to learn how to take a picture.

I had been photographing mostly for images to paint later in my studio, but I’m also a graphic designer and once the world started publishing everything in living color sometime in the mid-90s, I realized I had images that in some categories were as good as the ones I was purchasing at a pretty steep price.

I have years worth of negatives to scan, and I’ve still got that Pentax K1000, but now I’ve moved to digital and displaying photos is so streamlined. Ihope you’ve enjoyed browsing, and stop back soon to see the newest photos.

This photo was taken with black and white film in 1984, just a year after I’d bought my Pentax K-1000 fully manual camera. Sally was an Angora-mix cat who was deaf. I’d taken her in from a friend who had a hard time handling a spirited and unpredictable deaf cat, and she did eventually calm down somewhat but was always a bit of a wild child. Sally’s deafness may have added to her mystique as a model since she was often so deeply focused on something without the distraction of sound that she could hold perfectly still and I could capture an immense amount of detail, even as a total amateur.

I still can’t believe I managed to take these photos after having my camera for only about a year. I laid on the floor watching the late afternoon sunlight fill Sally’s frothy fur, its texture and depth holding the light more than reflecting, and in the shadows showing the textures of her fur instead of just a shadow as if she was emitting light on her own. Kublai was black and I was just learning how to photograph him in different lights, without too much success, and Bootsie was gray and white and much easier, but Sally, I found, was the perfect model.

At the time I took these photos I had little understanding of what I was doing. That’s okay, we all begin somewhere. I continued on with this photo shoot, seeing the interesting difference in texture between her fur and that awful olive green sculptured carpet, much improved in contrasty black and white, and the unintended nearly solid black background. The prints have been missing for a while—I find them among a stack of reference photos, then I lose that folder, etc. —and now that I’ve scanned the negatives I have them all digitized.

But I also liked the effect of her face in shadow instead of in the light. I would never have thought of that at the time, I know, if she hadn’t posed herself like that. And this was still in her wild days so I don’t know if she was actively teaching me a lesson or if she was just being Sally. Probably a little of both.

While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off of each side.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered here because customers often want a custom size. Smaller canvases are 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting.

I sign all prints next to my original signature.

GREETING CARDS

Greeting cards are printed on 12 pt, stock and come with a choice of envelopes.

  • Card is blank inside but can be customized with your message for an extra charge.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

If you know Pittsburgh, PA, you know that “SahSide” is how we pronounce “South Side” in Pittsburghese, and also that part of town is just as colorful as the photograph!

And if you don’t know Pittsburgh, this photo seems to remind many people of other favorite cities–Amsterdam and New Orleans are usually the first guess. It’s a view of an old-style city street rejuvenated with new coats of paint and lots to offer.

I set them up so the image runs from edge to edge, then the sides are black or white or sometimes I slip in a color that coordinates with the painting. This canvas mirrors the edges of the image around the sides.

Sophie was always in one of the windows when I left and when I returned, and she always managed to use the curtains to dramatic advantage. This is one of my fondest memories of her, nestled in the creamy lace with the spring-blooming forget-me-nots in the windowbox.

If you’re going to stand out in a crowd, do it well.

Just one white crocus among all the purples in my neighbor’s little garden. It appeared on its own a few years ago—this clump of crocuses were all purple for years, and I have the photos to prove it because I’ve photographed them just about every year even though the photos look pretty much the same. Some people want to remove it because it breaks up the perfection of purple, plant it somewhere else on its own, but this is where it was meant to be. Some things are like that.

A kitty having a bath in the sink is not terribly noteworthy, but in 2009 I was still discovering the magic of black and green and the green reflection of the sink on Jelly Bean’s fur and especially his toe pads, was enchanting, and I also like this photo for its somewhat abstract quality.

Who knew that vintage mint green sink would photograph in such a rich tone, especially when filled with a black cat? From the time I installed the new bathroom, the black cats owned it and the contrast of their black fur with the mint green fixtures and white walls and floor has been stunning and created some of the most favorite photos in my cat collection.

The set includes two familiar images, but really focuses on one kitty—Jelly Bean! “Gosh, I’m Cute” pictures Jelly Bean admiring himself in the mirror long offered as a greeting card, and “Have a Drink With Family” shows the Fantastic Four all drinking from the sink faucet at the same time. The new designs are “Composition in Green and Black”, offered by request but one of my favorite atmospheric images of Jelly Bean dozing in the sun on the edge of the sink, and “Toe Cleaning in Green and Black”, the Bean once again in a close-up capture of activity with the mint green sink reflecting on Bean’s black fur and paws.

Jelly Bean enjoys being washed in spring sunlight as I enjoy how the pattern of the window muntins falls across the wall, the sink and him. What you can’t hear in this photo is Jelly Bean’s loud, vigorous purr as it echoes in the sink, truly an amazing percussive technique.

This card is one of four designs in the set “Compositions in Black and Green”. This very photo was the inspiration for this series of greeting cards, and the calendar of the same name, giving me a focus for the whole series of images. I loved the look of this image as soon as I saw Jelly Bean quietly resting on the edge of the sink, all its shades of green lit by the spring sunlight, Bean’s pleasantly rounded shape contrasting with geometric shadows of the window frame and muntins, and even before I photographed it the idea of a series of photos on this theme was born, including even the name. I already had a number of photos in the theme of black and green and knew I’d get more, and even to this day I am photographing more “compositions in black and green”.

Especially if you’re the Parched Puddies having your daily drink in the mint green sink and the drink is water!

It’s Giuseppe, Jelly Bean, Mr. Sunshine and Mewsette, who were fostered in the “old” bathroom, before it was remodeled, and everything leaked. They grew up assuming you could drink out of any faucet, and still, years later, gather in the bathroom sink in twos, threes and fours, asking for a drink. I feature this photo each year at St. Patrick’s Day, though neither they nor I are Irish.

Jelly Bean is about as cute as cute can be and he knows how to use it.

This photo has a popularity of its own—what are the chances I’d catch Bean at his toilette? In fact, the very old bathroom was being renovated after a disaster involving all those leaky things. The four black kittens had been fostered in that room and just presumed you were supposed to drink from leaky faucets because it was so fun. They were in there immediately as soon as it was safe, Jelly Bean sitting in a completely new vintage sink in a different spot, waiting for the salvaged faucet to drip. And admiring himself in my temporary mirror.

About the artwork

“Of the Rain and Giuseppe, Searching” is one of a series of photos I took of Giuseppe looking out the window at the rain and have always thought they’d be able to convey a variety of messages as photo cards, each of which can be found in my Feline Photo Greeting Cards gallery, and also attractive photo prints, which you can also find in my Cat Photos and Black and White galleries.

I could hardly pass up the mood and the composition, chose six of all the photos I’d taken, decided they’d look best in black and white and set them up as a photo short story on The Creative Cat in Of the Rain and Giuseppe. Giuseppe often gazes out “the big north window” dreaming in eloquent and sometimes lyrical terms of his precious French-Canadian Mlle. Daisy Emerald Marguerite who lives up the hill in faraway Canada, and who in real life is kept safe and loved by a friend in Hamilton. She and I enjoy composing messages back and forth in very purple Victorian prose, I enjoy the exercises in writing in a different style and subject matter, and we all have a great laugh, except Giuseppe who is a little insecure.

Vintage Daffodils

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I love these old daffodils standing to greet the dawn.

Years ago I visited the site of an abandoned farm with a friend who had discovered it, and the place was like a wonderland of leftovers and memories from decades of people loving their land and working very hard.

The farmland had been sold and was due to be cleared and “made ready” for development. The wooded hillsides, the partly-overgrown upper fields, the packed clay roads from one pasture to another, the locust posts still sound and straight would all disappear.

The barn still stood, though it was hardly sound. Barns carried tons of weight in livestock and stuff for livestock and are generally built the sturdiest of any building on the land and last a long time past nearly anything else. Off in the woods was an old chicken coop, still smelling just a bit like chickens, but obviously made from hand-hewn boards. We knew this would be either plowed under or sent to a landfill and we wanted to salvage as much wood as we could, but the three of us couldn’t easily carry even one of the 12-foot 2x10s and knew that cutting them would be impossible. Some of the artifacts we found in the barn, empty food tins and old tools, told us the farm had probably been there since the mid-nineteenth century.

I was moved to tears at the generations of people who worked hard on their traditional farm, but also loved their flowers and surrounded their house with color and scent.

And there were these daffodils, bright yellow and “doubled” as flowers are called when they sprout extra rows of petals. Doubled is an understatement—they have so many rows of petals I couldn’t count, and each flower takes several days to fully open. They were clustered around the house and barn, here and there in the dim under trees, but the most joyous display was all along the road that curved up from the barn to the upper pasture, a riot of daffodils that would have accompanied the person on the tractor or leading the cows, as winter led to spring and the hard work of farming began again in earnest, they would be cheered on by a long line of yellow flowers nodding and waving as if in applause. It must have taken decades for them to naturalize and fill in like that.

The daffodils were in full bloom when we were there on a sunny spring morning. Knowing it was all going to the backhoe, we decided to preserve this memory by taking as much as we could and filled our cars with buckets of daffodils, a few other plants, and my beloved dogwood, a native sapling the day I took it home, now proudly filled out and blooming with creamy flowers the size of dessert plates.

Every spring these daffodils still turn their faces to the sun and bloom enthusiastically, and I think of the people who loved and planted and nurtured these things and hope they know that someone found their little paradise and helped to salvage some of what they loved.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The first thing to bloom in my yard this year and just about every year, my tiny delicate crocus versicolor, purchased just after I moved here. It’s been blooming here and there ever since. It prefers much more sun than it gets here, and some years the greens come up but never flower, so I’m always glad to see one and know they’ve made it through another year.

Five Sentence Fiction, 2015

The days stolidly dark, the nights impenetrable, the monochromatic sameness seeped into my soul to harden it, slowly, without detection, as trees are petrified into stone replicas of themselves, unable to hide, fight, run and save themselves. Those last breaths, knowing the newness of life was just ahead, always it had been there as this process ran its course, but the disbelieving heart would not, could not let it in, smothering in the end of days. The last moment of consciousness is at hand. The taste of acceptance is on my tongue. Just at that moment a bit of light softens the gloom as if it was not a miracle but the ordinary everydayness of life to see from out of the sepia world a flower, a cup of purple filled with golden sunlight, the entrance to a new life, on the threshold of spring.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Years ago I visited the site of an abandoned farm with a friend who had discovered it, and the place was like a wonderland of leftovers and memories from decades of people loving their land and working very hard.

The farmland had been sold and was due to be cleared and “made ready” for development. The wooded hillsides, the partly-overgrown upper fields, the packed clay roads from one pasture to another, the locust posts still sound and straight would all disappear.

The barn still stood, though it was hardly sound. Barns carried tons of weight in livestock and stuff for livestock and are generally built the sturdiest of any building on the land and last a long time past nearly anything else. Off in the woods was an old chicken coop, still smelling just a bit like chickens, but obviously made from hand-hewn boards. We knew this would be either plowed under or sent to a landfill and we wanted to salvage as much wood as we could, but the three of us couldn’t easily carry even one of the 12-foot 2x10s and knew that cutting them would be impossible. Some of the artifacts we found in the barn, empty food tins and old tools, told us the farm had probably been there since the mid-nineteenth century.

I found this bunch of marbles in the soil of a yard where I lived years ago. None is valuable, but are all interesting and were probably some child’s collection of neat stuff that somehow got tossed in the yard—big brother teasing? little sister go hold of them? mom tired of the noise of them rolling around the floor? They were all in an area where I’d dug my garden and I found them as I tilled the soil, so unfortunately some of them are nicked or scraped.

Right now I use them in the bottom of flasks and bottles with cut flowers and plant cuttings, but I rinsed them and laid them in the sun to dry and I really lost my marbles with the inspiration of the color, iridescence, reflections and refracted light through colored glass in early spring sun. This is one of many, many photos. I can guarantee you’ll be seeing more from this particular photo shoot.

Mewsette emerges into the sun with the blue fuzzy she has chased around and around and around my room until finally she captured it and presents it to me.

I am honored.

Her triumphal stance is priceless.

Possibly one of my favorite photos EVER, this was Mewsette’s “debut” in 2010, and another of the photos that encouraged me to post daily photos of my cats—I first posted this on my daily photo blog, Today, instead of posting it here! But I remember, and revisiting the folder of photos I took that day, that I only had one chance to get this shot, and it was only by luck that it was a clear and well-exposed shot. With Mewsette’s playful activity she only held still for a few seconds, and with the contrast in the sunlight and darkness it could have been completely overexposed or totally blurry. Lucky me! ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In the dense, comforting shade of a century-old spreading maple, a section of the row of headstones farthest back in the military veteran’s section, the first stones to be installed during the Civil War, reads only:

SOLDIER
1861–1865

A father, brother, husband, son of someone, unknown, but honored by a headstone that tells of his final sacrifice, rests there.

One of the most moving photos I took from the 2010 Memorial Day ceremony at Chartiers Cemetery, but perhaps the most fitting, no name, no rank, no distinguishing remarks, but the most common thread of all, a soldier.

And not just in remembering the Civil War, or even other conflicts following. My ancestors were fighting their own civil wars in Eastern Europe at the time of America’s Civil War, only one in a long line of civil wars that perhaps finalized their decisions to leave the only land they’d known to come to America for freedom and a chance at the dream they’d never see, not even today, in the lands where their families had lived for centuries. A few decades later, they had no qualms about bearing arms and traveling back to those lands to protect the country they had embraced as their home. Centuries of soldiers everywhere who fought for freedom, protected their loved ones, gave their lives, each brought us a step closer. May the day soon come when no one needs to die for freedom.

About the artwork

I have to say, I do like it, Mr. Sunshine, subtle, almost abstract. I have some talented cats here. I do like the photos that show all the assets of my beautiful cats, but I also like the abstract shots that happen to have a cat in them in a very artful way.

I also had way more photos of the blue pitcher with black cats in them than without. I had my DSLR in my right hand and my left arm around Mr. Sunshine, Giuseppe and Mewsette on the cabinet, holding them against me as they struggled, and waving my right foot at Mimi and Bean on the floor to decoy them from jumping up. So I was standing on my left foot and doing the hokey pokey, and I don’t know why the photo is as clear as it is, or how I got the angle I wanted showing a bit of the table above it…

About the artwork

This photo was taken with black and white film in 1984, just a year after I’d bought my Pentax K-1000 fully manual camera. Sally was an Angora-mix cat who was deaf. I’d taken her in from a friend who had a hard time handling a spirited and unpredictable deaf cat, and she did eventually calm down somewhat but was always a bit of a wild child. Sally’s deafness may have added to her mystique as a model since she was often so deeply focused on something without the distraction of sound that she could hold perfectly still and I could capture an immense amount of detail, even as a total amateur.

I still can’t believe I managed to take these photos after having my camera for only about a year. I laid on the floor watching the late afternoon sunlight fill Sally’s frothy fur, its texture and depth holding the light more than reflecting, and in the shadows showing the textures of her fur instead of just a shadow as if she was emitting light on her own. Kublai was black and I was just learning how to photograph him in different lights, without too much success, and Bootsie was gray and white and much easier, but Sally, I found, was the perfect model.

At the time I took these photos I had little understanding of what I was doing. That’s okay, we all begin somewhere. I continued on with this photo shoot, seeing the interesting difference in texture between her fur and that awful olive green sculptured carpet, much improved in contrasty black and white, and the unintended nearly solid black background. The prints have been missing for a while—I find them among a stack of reference photos, then I lose that folder, etc. —and now that I’ve scanned the negatives I have them all digitized.

But I also liked the effect of her face in shadow instead of in the light. I would never have thought of that at the time, I know, if she hadn’t posed herself like that. And this was still in her wild days so I don’t know if she was actively teaching me a lesson or if she was just being Sally. Probably a little of both.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

…and it disappeared over the edge
and took a piece of my soul with it.

Really, on the way home from a quick errand to a shopping center I encountered a stunning winter sunset just beginning to color and decided to take a detour through a local park to see it in progress. All I had was my smartphone which doesn’t handle colors and contrasts at all well, but decided I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

The sunset had me racing over acres of the park which is on a ridge over a valley, just the perfect setting to watch the sun drop below the far horizon with both trees as a foreground, and then nothing but sky. This was the first photo I took, and I decided if this was the only good one I got, I would be happy. I love so many things about the composition—the shape the trees make and how they march over the edge of the snow, the perfect shading in the sky from violet through red to yellow, the violet snow—and most of it is nature made, I was only there to record it.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This photo is “Cathedral of Trees”, a spot on the floodplain where trees have to reach high out of the valley to capture the sunlight and so grow tall and straight. The trail among the trees and bends through an area where the trees arch over the soft leaf-littered path like an entry way to a magical place and has the feeling of a high-ceilinged cathedral where the light comes in from clerestory windows.

It’s right off the Panhandle Trail in Collier Township, PA, and part of my “Sun Shadow Ice and Snow: Seasons Along the Panhandle Trail” exhibit. It’s so exciting to share some of my favorite places with people who might never otherwise see them.

The Garden Bean, color

About the artwork

Moses absorbs the sun on her fur and from the bricks until it gets too hot, then she moves into the shade of the barrel of pole beans, her favorite shady spot.

The beans are growing, the geraniums are blooming, the sun is bright and hot, and I remember a certain sweet gray kitty who spent every available moment on the brick patio next to my garden, summer and winter, and each time I look at the florid overgrowth out there I remember how Moses enjoyed the little brick patio. Other kitties would come and go during the day as the heat and their interest waned, but Moses was serious about her outdoor time.

Her reign as a Garden Sprite lasted from very early in my years here, about 1992 until just before her death in February 2006. A physically limited formerly feral kitty, Moses never asked for much, but was passionate about what she felt she should have. Her hips and hind legs were wasted and her muscles weak the day I took her in in 1987, and while she gained more strength than I ever imagined she would in those legs she was never able to run or jump, instead climbing on the rare occasion she felt the need to be off the floor, and hopping like a bunny for a few steps when walking somewhat quickly wasn’t getting her there quickly enough. As she grew older those hind legs and hips began to develop arthritis, and while I tried many treatments for her from glucosamine and chondroiton capsules to herbals and homeopathics, she resisted having anything administered to her however gently, and the best I could do was add homeopathics to the household water bowls.

Instead, one day as I worked in the garden, she came to the basement screen door. Once Moses came indoors there was no turning back, and she didn’t even look outside, in part fearful of what was out there. But she’d been lying in the sun coming in the basement door and followed it across the floor as it moved…out the door. Well, what was a kitty to do? She looked at me hopefully with that lovely gray tabby face, and gave me one of her sweet, silent meows. I could deny her nothing, my eternally gentle and humble little bodhisattva, and under the spell of her soft green eyes I opened the screen door and let her walk outside. She stepped out the door, let me close it, and laid down on the sun-warmed concrete slab, which was where her sun had gotten to. Through the day, as I weeded and trimmed and transplanted and harvested, she moved along with the sun, sipping now and then from the water bowl I’d brought out.

And so began nearly 15 years of daily thermonuclear treatments for Moses. Summer and winter she had to have time on her bricks, or at least on the wooden deck, even if only 15 minutes. I never let her go out without me so her days during the week were abridged, but when I began working at home she was in her glory; at her advanced age the increased time in the sun, the activity and the sweet pleasure for her probably gave her more years than she otherwise would have had, and made her last years more comfortable for her. I closely watched her, especially as she grew deaf in her later teens, but she never even walked into the garden, staying on the bricks covering about 20′ x 20′, rolling herself lazily over from one side to the other so that she was evenly toasted, and watched with sleepy amusement as birds landed around her and little voles and field mice ran across her paws.

I have a series of similar photos of her in my boxes of prints from years gone by, and I’ve been sorting through them to find these wonderful vintage photos I’d nearly forgotten. I had scanned the print and because the colors were odd—the effects of bad printing and a little bit of aging—I adjusted the color here but there’s still too much red; an aftereffect of Fuji film, so I discovered in comparing prints on Fuji and Kodak. But I’m also now scanning the negatives and getting completely different results from other photos, so it wasn’t entirely the film. Once I find all the negatives and scan them, this will be one of the series of four I call “Moses’ Summer in the Garden” with photos from June, July, August and September. You’ll see these soon as notecards and other paper products and some housewares.

That particular set of photos is not in full color, but desaturated, in part so I could make the colors consistent across two decades, across film and digital, and even different film types and digital cameras, and the softly faded colors were just so…so Moses. Here is the desaturated version.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This may not be the most detailed or realistic shot of purple coneflowers (echinacea), but I composed it for its abstract nature. Like the slideshows I featured earlier today, I like to photograph these native plants—and other flowers—in a recognizable but less realistic style, shortening the depth of field, blurring the background, putting the flowers in their setting. This is a portion of my pink and red garden which I’ll no doubt be featuring this week since it’s finally in full bloom; you’ve already seen the pink pasture roses.

Pittsburgh's Flatiron

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Most cities have a Flatiron building–it always seems there’s one spot where the streets come together at an angle and leave an awkward space, and being downtown, someone has to build on it. Downtown Pittsburgh, being built into the “Golden Triangle” where the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers come together to form the “Point” at the headwaters of the Ohio River, seems to have triangular buildings on every other corner.

This is just a tiny building in the middle of downtown, now housing Wood Street Station/Wood Street Galleries but originally the Monongahela Bank. Built in 1927 of limestone and marble, with a metal canopy with ginkgo leaf patterns etched in the glass.

Moonrise and Mist

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In 2006 I was still lugging around a few film cameras that could capture what my first little 2MP point-and-shoot digital could not. I’d been working with a number of local and larger land conservation groups for years and had a literal field day photographing and painting those beautiful areas as they recovered from industrial or other use, or were simply conserved as overgrown land that housed an ecosystem all their own.

At the same time I was canoeing Chartiers Creek, sometimes for work but usually for fun, and from early morning until night I saw incredibly lovely scenes that I couldn’t catch in a moving canoe. I vowed to return some time to capture as many as I could in different areas.

I was familiar with a large flood plain conservation area and also its access to the creek, and I remembered at one evening event watching the moon rise over the ridge to the east, so when I got the idea to photograph the moon rising in summer using black and white film I chose that destination. Next full moon available was the Thunder Moon in July.

Though it was a clear night, a mist rose with the moon and went drifting across the flood plain and among the trees like a spectre. These were shot with film, and while I had my notes from a test session on a night with a partial moon, and from photographing the moon at other times, I knew the mist was a variable I couldn’t control, and I might possibly end up with just a bunch of blur because the mist was moving across the open field, not hanging in the air like a fog.

When I got the photos back I was so disappointed at not being able to get the clarity I’d remembered in the moon and the surroundings that I put them away for a bit, then got them back out and decided I liked them for what they were. In fact, I find them quite magical. A few of them I like very much.

And because a few of canoeing buddies didn’t want me wandering around on a full moon night in an isolated area alone, or walking in the creek with my camera gear and no one else around, they joined me.

I need a scanner that can scan all my old negatives. The grit and noise you see in some of the photos is largely from the printing process. But as I found when I realized I treasured the photos even though they weren’t at all what I’d envisioned, I think all that unintended pattern adds to the feeling of wandering through a field on a misty moonlit night, trying to focus where our human eyes are not created to see with much clarity.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Little bunnies acting like they are big bunnies are just adorable. If that sounds corny, it’s true. This little one lives in a nest along the edge of my garden. It’s the only one I see and I don’t know the status of the bunny’s siblings, so she may really be the center of her own little universe.

They look a little blurry and soft because I photographed them through the screen door in my basement. But I like that softening, it adds a bit of magic to an ordinary scene.

In the last photo I decided to apply a filter to the image and desaturate the photo so the bunny looks like the little statue she is trying to imitate.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My pink pasture roses are enthusiastically blooming. They are an old-fashioned native rose, brilliant pink but “single”, meaning they have only one row of petals, five in total in that row. Their thorns, a mix of short, medium and long and all needle sharp, line their stems as numerous as salt grains on a pretzel, and I, typically gloveless in every situation, will don gloves when I cut a bouquet to put in the vase by my door. The scent of roses can be cloying and even heavy, but these roses smell light and fresh, like a clean June morning. Unhybrid and totally native, they are as tough as the clay they will grown in. This rose was in the yard when I moved in, and may have been here for decades; in my experience all those old roses were a tough bunch, disappearing under the lawnmower’s blade only to reappear the next year, or sprouting up in an untended yard where they had been long forgotten.

They fall apart rather quickly when cut, but I still do to enjoy them near me. Years ago I did a small quick daily sketch of a bunch of these and my red climbing roses that is one of my favorite still lifes.

About the artwork

Oh my goodness! I think that needs to be her name. Every time I look at her that’s what I say because she’s so cute.

Ophelia is a formerly feral foster who came to me in September 2015. By July 2016 she was pretty relaxed, as you can see. But she is such a bundle of cuteness that she has to think her name is “Oh My Goodness”! I’ve also included the graphic I created to help promote her adoption. She does love that mirror.

Giclee is the highest quality print available because the technique uses a dozen or more ink ports to capture all the nuances of the original painting, including details of the texture, far more sensitive than any other printing medium. Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off of each side.

In the middle of a heat wave, a downpour can actually be quite welcome. Huge raindrops began smacking into everything, just a few, then more, and within minutes the din was deafening and I could barely see across the street with lots of thunder rolling through the valley. Pretty scary for a while, but then the birds began to sing, including the baby wrens in the pussy willow, and the chickadees who had taken cover and were mad about having to abandon their feeders.

My gutters runneth over. This was a very happy rain.

After a stormy start and a hot humid afternoon, the last of the storm clouds dispersed and the sun put on quite a show. I was not out in nature, I was driving through the city and suburbs, and it’s not often I find a spot that isn’t criss-crossed with wires and light poles rudely jutting into my sunset.  I this case just one light fixture and a cell tower and a bit of wires that I edited out. All worth it for a perfect sunset.

I love the cheerful warm yellow of rudbeckia, or black-eyed susans, complete with the little dark-chocolate center. A few rain drops were still falling at the end of the storm when I ran out to photograph these glistening flowers of these rudbeckia in the rain, and sparkling droplets at the tips of the petals. They are one of the native species I have tucked into sunnier spots in my backyard wildlife habitat.

It doesn’t mean you make no plans, just that you allow them to change.

These geese look like a bunch of tourists ambling along, and yet on that day we had had heavy rains and our creek, their home, had nearly topped its banks. They had fled the water and the banks and were up in the parking lot and on the streets for safety, yet they were being calm and collected, for a bunch of geese, while the humans were racing around predicting a flood that was not likely to arrive, though it looked imminent.

But aside from that lesson, I’ve always liked the photo of the geese.

I was so moved by the color, the random shapes of the hangers fading off into the distance, sparkling drops, blurred drops, gentle bokeh highlights of raindrops glistening on the plants in my garden. The colors of imminent autumn in a black and white photo is poignant, the warm angled light made cold, the rich variation in greens and yellows flattened.

As the season begins to color up from the greens of summer to all the colors of autumn, a black and white photo of the anodized aluminum tub in my garden with a late planting of salad greens in waning summer sunlight seems to hold a mystery, shadows, shapes, angles and lines, the wanted and unwanted, expected and unexpected, a new view on a common thing.

This photo is on traditional black and white film, taken with my Pentax K-1000 to capture the huge variety of textures and patterns without the distraction of color. I scanned the print, and someday may scan the negative. I have left a white border around it, reminiscent of the black and white photo.

I have no idea how my little hand-held digital metered the colors like this, but I heartily approve! Honestly, this is not touched up in any way, even though the sky looks as if I either added from another photo, I adjusted the color in that area or I just painted in another sky. The whole thing looks like a movie set.

The time of day was twilight, after the sun dropped below the horizon but still reflected on the sky and the thin overcast of clouds. I know I pointed my focus spot on the darkest area in the scene, way down at the other end of Main Street, the building that is actually on a hill in the next community, and that would have influenced the internal metering especially since the scene looks very bright although it’s only the street lights that provide illumination. I can assure you they are not that bright.

And likely the yellow lights also pushed the complementary blue of the sky a little brighter than it actually was. However it happened, I approve.

This was taken with my little Lumix point and shoot where I have very little control, but the other settings that would have influenced this outcome are two I’ve always set on these little cameras. First, I turn the stabilizer mode, which will help to eliminate blurriness in low-light conditions, to “off” because in these small cameras it simply changes the ASA setting to a higher number. This results in a photo that looks great in your view screen, but when you open it up on your computer it’s completely grainy. I use a tripod, or, as in this case, I find something to set the camera on or press it against and set the shutter for a 2-second timed delay so that everything is as still as it’s going to get when the shutter finally opens.

Second, I set the EV, or exposure value, setting two or three steps below the middle. Most cameras shoot light so that as much light as possible gets into the lens, but you also lose detail in the highlights and I find it doesn’t meter well for images with a lot of contrast, which is usually what attracts me.

So, I guess that’s how this one turned out like this.

Four Peppers

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

These four colorful peppers in one end of  my basket were eye-catchingly beautiful and mouth-wateringly tempting. They’re not absolutely uniform, perfectly formed, evenly colored and even have a little bit of soil still on them from a rain earlier in the day. They are good, honest farmer’s market peppers, picked that day, sorted, washed and packed, driven here and put on display by the person to whom I handed my money.

I chose this particular basket because of the arrangement of these four peppers. Then, when I got to my car and set it down to open the door, I looked down to see this perfect photo and took it right there in the parking lot of the farmer’s market, in the warm evening sun.

The little bit of mud-splash left on them from a storm earlier in the day just confirmed their freshness. These four have already been grilled along with a big red onion and thick-sliced tomato and placed atop pasta with some freshly-grated parmesan. A good bit of the joy of food for me is what it looks like.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I took this photo from a canoe on the Ohio River in 2007. Chartiers Creek, which runs right through Carnegie and which I canoed frequently at that time, spills out into the Ohio River at McKees Rocks. We finished paddling to the end of the creek and proceeded out onto the river. The sun was shining behind the buildings of downtown Pittsburgh so it isn’t as colorful as it could be, but still it’s the same Pittsburgh skyline, the fountain, the bridges, I’d recognize anywhere.

Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original. Digital prints are only available up to 11″ x 17″ and some of the prints are cropped to fit standard mat and frame sizes.

Digital prints have at least 1/2″ around the edges depending on the size of the print. All are countersigned by me.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Great view! On a bluff above the Allegheny River just across from downtown Pittsburgh, these colorful old houses looks like a little street somewhere in Europe, which is pretty much what it was patterned after.

But I couldn’t decide which was better—the row of houses, or the view of the whole scene, sky, houses, hillside, river and all. Plus, it’s more dimensional to frame.

Sometimes the scene is just visually stunning, especially with a little flash of angled late afternoon sun on that bright red Virginia Creeper. Love the peeling paint, the weathered wood, gentle dappled and reflected autumn light, cloudy windows and rusty chipping door hinge. Yet the creeper and the old garage have their own ways of fading into a new season: the plant flashes its brilliance before it fades after its one season of life, while the building fades though it gathers and carries memories from year to year.

Even though the autumn landscape is one big beautiful scene, this is my favorite iconic autumn photo for its contrasts and its focus on one small portion of the season. And that shade of red.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is the colorful sugar maple that stands by Chartiers Creek on my way to Main Street. It’s like an old friend. I chose this angle because it had every color of leaf in it and filled the whole frame with just bits of that brilliant complementary blue autumn sky. Because the leaves are almost gradated in a semi-circle it made me think of a rainbow.

I had a few places to photograph autumn scenes for a couple of customers and I just couldn’t stop, not until the clouds covered the sky and the rain came. What a gorgeous autumn day to be running around in the woods and on Main Street and several other places trying to get the best autumn photos before the rain and cold! This is the colorful sugar maple that stands by Chartiers Creek on my way to Main Street. It’s like an old friend.

“Exotic” is one in a series of photos I took late on a very dark day, and only in that darkness could I capture the delicate beauty of these dry remains of wildflowers I’d photographed through the rest of the year. I will be adding the other photos to my photo gallery here, and collected in a special gallery so you can enjoy the delicacy of gentle highlights, muted earth tones and exotic shapes that met me on my way. Below I have a gallery of all the photos in the collection, and the essay I wrote when I returned and selected the photos to share.

About The Light in the Darkness

I have had far worse days. Overwhelmed by the demands of commercial work as my customers and I prepared for the holidays along with merchandise orders and custom portraits and my own preparations for ending the year and beginning the next as a small business, I left the house at 4:00 p.m. destined for the post office and bank just before they closed.

Though I had walked this half mile route from my home to Main Street for years, I had lately been driving, using the need to save time or the awkwardness of a pile of packages as an excuse for wasting gas and a chance at exercise and fresh air. The day was hardly inspiring—five days prior to the winter solstice the days were frighteningly short, sunset less than an hour away, and in a series of heavy dark days typical of this area in late autumn and early winter, dense pasty clouds hanging low overhead and so dark it had felt like dusk at noon, and now some of the street lights on Main Street were already alight. I nearly always take photos on these walks, and while I laid the strap of my camera bag over my shoulder I was glad that, for once, I would probably not find anything to photograph and take time from my day in conditions like these.

Traffic was heavy so I took my route under the bridge, next to the creek where traffic noises faded and birds sang, a trickling sound as water flowed smoothly past over the rocks in the shallow waterway. And in the dim and fading light a world so familiar at first appeared dark and nearly colorless until my eyes adjusted to the light and found such wonders among the wildflowers along the way, standing upright though dried and every shade of brown and tan and umber I found fantastical birds, abstract sculptures, amazing complex patters among the dried flower heads, exposed and broken seed pods, leaves clinging curled to stems.

I could not stop for the post office and bank both closed at 4:30, so I walked as fast as I could with my camera bag on one shoulder and a large canvas bag of packages on the other so that I could amble back through this wonderland on my way back to my neighborhood. The light was so dim then, as the time approached sunset within minutes, that I had to set the ISO of my camera on 800 to get anything but vague images floating in sepia darkness, even with all my settings to admit as much light as possible.

These plants had sprung up from seeds tossed here on the wind and water, carried by birds and people walking past, sprouted in spring, housed birds and insects in summer, borne their flowers in summer and fall. I had walked among them many times with my camera and sketchpad, I knew where each stood, when they bloomed, their botanical names and history, I looked for them each year and anticipated the best times to compose the images I visualized, but this was a gift in its unfamiliarity.

Now, after several frosts, autumn storms and snow, the weak parts had been stripped away and the strongest parts of them were burnished by adversity and stood dignified in the dimness, with just enough sheen to highlight their most interesting shapes, textures and combined patterns.

The background now, rather than the usual details of other plants and flowers, was darkness, the more perfect to silhouette each delicate construction as if in a gallery featuring the finest art.

Milkweed pods became flocks of fantastical birds, or individual exotic species clinging to stems. Tightly curled dried flowers or clusters of puffy seeds set loose, sere and twisted leaves and flowers of another time. Even the holiday decorations in a shop front, capturing the blue from the late afternoon light with highlights from the store within echoed the shapes and patterns of the natural forms outdoors, as the raindrops that would soon fall.

I arrived home with dirty shoes from walking in mud, and dirty knees from kneeling in wet grass, bits of leaves and stems and seeds flocked with frills to carry them on the wind on my skirt and jacket, in my hair, on my bags, souvenirs of a timeless magic, both in letting go of the time of day, and letting go of time altogether for that period. I only let go and rejoined the day because it was too dark to photograph any longer.

I am grateful to this gift of creative vision that releases me from everyday cares for just a short time, exercises those aesthetic senses and relaxes the overused worry lines, and gives me these wonderful gifts of images to share, just for noticing the inspiration was there.

There is always something new to learn about the things we think we know well. Never forget that when the light seems dim there is much to be seen with the heart, and when adversity has taken away the quick and obvious beauty, the strongest parts remain, dignified in their naked and twisted strength.

Possibly just as much a question of my activities as my aesthetic intentions with my photographs of this one lone tree, at the top of a path at the top of a hill, clouds scudding across the sky on a dark winter afternoon, dark enough to dim the colors in the winter field. Something we should ask ourselves on a regular basis.

One conclusion was that I should get lost on country roads more often. I saw this from a distance, a ribbon of winding road before me and many hills and curves between me and the tree, and drove until I found it.

These delicately fluted flowers are actually the opened seed pods from evening primrose, a native wildflower, but rarely do we appreciate the dry faded portions of wildflowers strong enough to survive and make a statement long after the brilliant flowers and verdant leaves are gone.

These flowers grow on the sloping bank along Chartiers Creek. I was actually under the bridge with four lanes of traffic overhead, using my telephoto lens to capture them growing from the rip rap, or the covering of large stones and pieces of broken concrete that hold the creek bank in place during high water events, and could not get closer than five feet away.

The days can be very dark at this time of the year, as is often the case in these last days of autumn when night comes early. But fog and heavy overcast had left the days nearly monochromatic, or in the gray and sepia duotone I find so familiar in conditions like these. I took a walk to the post office and bank in the late afternoon, within an hour of sunset, but even with the light fog, overcast and depending day, I knew I’d find the beauty in the day, emerging from the mist, washed in delicate highlights, familiar things looking completely foreign, taken out of their own context.

That was my reaction.

I took a walk to the post office and bank in the late afternoon, within an hour of sunset, but even with the light fog, overcast and depending day, I knew I’d find the beauty in the day, emerging from the mist, washed in delicate highlights, familiar things looking completely foreign, taken out of their own context.

This is a cluster of milkweed pods. They look like something that came from outer space in the best of times, but especially against the muted background their slightly rough and ridged surface, elongated shape and smooth opening where the seeds are still escaping they truly look like alien constructions. Put a bunch of them together at the end of a long and curving stem and we know the aliens have landed, and possibly one of their birds has come to light on a stem, or a group have clustered together to survey this strange new world.

These grow on the sloping bank along Chartiers Creek. I was actually under the bridge with four lanes of traffic overhead, using my telephoto lens to capture them growing from the rip rap, or the covering of large stones and pieces of broken concrete that hold the creek bank in place during high water events, and could not get closer than five feet away. I walked in a semi-circle to get the best angle of this alien object and this was my favorite.

About The Light in the Darkness

I have had far worse days. Overwhelmed by the demands of commercial work as my customers and I prepared for the holidays along with merchandise orders and custom portraits and my own preparations for ending the year and beginning the next as a small business, I left the house at 4:00 p.m. destined for the post office and bank just before they closed.

Though I had walked this half mile route from my home to Main Street for years, I had lately been driving, using the need to save time or the awkwardness of a pile of packages as an excuse for wasting gas and a chance at exercise and fresh air. The day was hardly inspiring—five days prior to the winter solstice the days were frighteningly short, sunset less than an hour away, and in a series of heavy dark days typical of this area in late autumn and early winter, dense pasty clouds hanging low overhead and so dark it had felt like dusk at noon, and now some of the street lights on Main Street were already alight. I nearly always take photos on these walks, and while I laid the strap of my camera bag over my shoulder I was glad that, for once, I would probably not find anything to photograph and take time from my day in conditions like these.

Traffic was heavy so I took my route under the bridge, next to the creek where traffic noises faded and birds sang, a trickling sound as water flowed smoothly past over the rocks in the shallow waterway. And in the dim and fading light a world so familiar at first appeared dark and nearly colorless until my eyes adjusted to the light and found such wonders among the wildflowers along the way, standing upright though dried and every shade of brown and tan and umber I found fantastical birds, abstract sculptures, amazing complex patters among the dried flower heads, exposed and broken seed pods, leaves clinging curled to stems.

I could not stop for the post office and bank both closed at 4:30, so I walked as fast as I could with my camera bag on one shoulder and a large canvas bag of packages on the other so that I could amble back through this wonderland on my way back to my neighborhood. The light was so dim then, as the time approached sunset within minutes, that I had to set the ISO of my camera on 800 to get anything but vague images floating in sepia darkness, even with all my settings to admit as much light as possible.

These plants had sprung up from seeds tossed here on the wind and water, carried by birds and people walking past, sprouted in spring, housed birds and insects in summer, borne their flowers in summer and fall. I had walked among them many times with my camera and sketchpad, I knew where each stood, when they bloomed, their botanical names and history, I looked for them each year and anticipated the best times to compose the images I visualized, but this was a gift in its unfamiliarity.

Now, after several frosts, autumn storms and snow, the weak parts had been stripped away and the strongest parts of them were burnished by adversity and stood dignified in the dimness, with just enough sheen to highlight their most interesting shapes, textures and combined patterns.

The background now, rather than the usual details of other plants and flowers, was darkness, the more perfect to silhouette each delicate construction as if in a gallery featuring the finest art.

Milkweed pods became flocks of fantastical birds, or individual exotic species clinging to stems. Tightly curled dried flowers or clusters of puffy seeds set loose, sere and twisted leaves and flowers of another time. Even the holiday decorations in a shop front, capturing the blue from the late afternoon light with highlights from the store within echoed the shapes and patterns of the natural forms outdoors, as the raindrops that would soon fall.

I arrived home with dirty shoes from walking in mud, and dirty knees from kneeling in wet grass, bits of leaves and stems and seeds flocked with frills to carry them on the wind on my skirt and jacket, in my hair, on my bags, souvenirs of a timeless magic, both in letting go of the time of day, and letting go of time altogether for that period. I only let go and rejoined the day because it was too dark to photograph any longer.

I am grateful to this gift of creative vision that releases me from everyday cares for just a short time, exercises those aesthetic senses and relaxes the overused worry lines, and gives me these wonderful gifts of images to share, just for noticing the inspiration was there.

There is always something new to learn about the things we think we know well. Never forget that when the light seems dim there is much to be seen with the heart, and when adversity has taken away the quick and obvious beauty, the strongest parts remain, dignified in their naked and twisted strength.

The Queen Anne flower has closed up to form a cup suitable for a midwinter celebration by the elves.

These flowers grow on the sloping bank along Chartiers Creek. I was actually under the bridge with four lanes of traffic overhead, using my telephoto lens to capture them growing from the rip rap, or the covering of large stones and pieces of broken concrete that hold the creek bank in place during high water events, and could not get closer than five feet away.

The days can be very dark at this time of the year, as is often the case in these last days of autumn when night comes early. But fog and heavy overcast had left the days nearly monochromatic, or in the gray and sepia duotone I find so familiar in conditions like these. ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Even though I grew up in the suburbs, I was surrounded by farms, many in full production as dairy or truck farms growing acres of vegetables still in the 1960s. The nucleus of a long-time family farm was right across the street from our 1950s-era ranch house, the rambling house still standing with the milk house refitted as a rental but the chicken cook housing a few old vehicles and some chickens. The barn came down before I was old enough to have a chance to explore it, but most of these suburban neighborhoods with the curving streets and cars in driveways also had a farmhouse and an old barn somewhere in the mix.

I love those old barns, that tend to stand longer than the houses do, being built for brute strength to handle the weight of livestock, equipment and materials. At some point I find them alone and isolated, no farmhouse near, abandoned to the overgrown driveway and fields, but still they hold their ground.

I captured this sunset just driving along the road in another suburban development, just at the moment the sun was falling toward the horizon throwing everything into silhouette, a statement of sorts on the disappearing industry and lifestyle that was once the standard of the day.

“You’re My Best Frond” features two tiny fiddlehead ferns just emerged from the leaf litter along the trail, caught at just the right angle. They’re rooted in the spot so they’re kind of stuck with each other. It’s a good thing they’re “such good fronds”! It still makes me laugh whenever I look at it. This image is also available as a greeting card as part of my “Inspired by Flowers” set.

About the artwork

We all love my studio window, a big, old, battered metal-framed casement about 4′ x 4′ on the second floor looking out at the spruce, maple and river birch in the front of our house. I call it the “tree house” as we watch the weather and light change and spend time with all the tree-dwellers in the neighborhood above the street. Giuseppe was watching Mr. Cardinal singing his spring song on this particular afternoon and I watched the light and images reflect on his eye and admiring his profile.

SHIPPING AND CHARGES

Prints up to 16″ x 20″ are shipped flat in a rigid envelope. Larger prints are shipped rolled in a mailing tube unless otherwise requested; flat shipping is an extra cost because it’s oversized.

GICLEE PRINTS

The giclees are printed on acid-free hot press art paper for a smooth matte finish using archival inks. Giclee is the highest quality print available because the technique uses a dozen or more ink ports to capture all the nuances of the original painting, including details of the texture, far more sensitive than any other printing medium. Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off of each side.

These three really have to stop this sort of thing. I have work to do and I can’t be distracted by such serious cuteness. Mimi, Sunshine, Jelly Bean.

Mimi looks miffed, possibly because of the snow (see below), Mr. Sunshine looks like he’s making a face by sticking out his tongue (he and Bean had been giving Mimi a big bath), and Bean just looks like he’s there and he’s cute and nothing more is needed.

This was one of the more popular photos I’ve ever posted on Instagram and Facebook. Guess that means I ought to offer it as a print! I’ll see if the quality level is high enough because I took it with my phone.

Dramatic Light

When I saw the snow that morning, just an inch or two carefully blanketing each branch and twig in the tree outside my window I knew what my destiny would be if the snow stopped and the sun came out. It did, and I headed for the Panhandle Trail, on foot just planning about an hour of photos in the first half mile of the trail. Mission accomplished.

As I drove there, looking at the sun and shadow play across the frosted hills and glow down into valleys I had an idea for two photos I wanted to capture. This was one of them, not necessarily the place, but the light illuminating the trees in front of the dramatically dark background and sky, the trail wandering off around a curve into an adventure.

I usually try not to plan ahead for photos because it’s possible to miss others while focusing on a goal that may not even be possible. I was lucky this particular morning and not only captured the ones I wanted, but many, many more I would never have imagined.

Frosted

What’s not to love? A tangled happy garden, a sleepy happy cat, lots of color and detail and sunlight.

My garden kitty, Moses, enjoys her morning nap on the bricks in the shade of the beans, mid-morning in September. I’m fairly certain I took this in the late 90s, but it stands in for any sunny morning Moses and I enjoyed in the garden. Remembering Cookie and Namir this morning while Mimi and Mewsette and I were out hanging laundry (well, I was hanging laundry), I thought I’d bring out this photo. I think of all the cats who shared my garden, and the fact that Mimi and Moses were probably acquainted from Mimi visiting the garden and patio when the basement door was open, though they never lived in the house together.

Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

DIGITAL PRINTS

Digital prints are made on acid-free matte-finish natural white 100# cover using archival digital inks. While digital prints are not the quality of a giclee in capturing every nuance and detail of color, texture and shading, I am still very pleased with the outcome and usually only I as the artist, could tell where detail and color were not as sharp as the original.

CANVAS PRINTS

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off of each side.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered here because customers often want a custom size. Smaller canvases are 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. On these prints the image wraps around the edges.

About the artwork

One of my favorite photos of Stanley from August 2006, it was his last summer with me, he was about 24 years old, needing a little supportive care but still enjoying his time outdoors with me and every moment of every day besides that.

Sunshine and fresh air is a perfect tonic for an old cat. We were keeping the chronic renal failure at bay with doses of subcutaneous fluids, enticing foods, and a morning visit to the back yard and a nap on the deck every day the weather permitted. Stanley forgot all about feeling a little queasy and tired as he pranced around the back yard from bush to tree to post, smelling the messages—downloading his “pee-mail” and uploading his reply, as I always called it. Back up on the deck, a little bath and quick nap in the sun, then inside to eat ravenously as if nothing was the matter.

I have decades of memories of Stanley; he came to me several years into adulthood and lived with me for 21 years, suffering from chronic urinary issues for which he had obviously been violently punished. A sweet, silly, friendly kitty underneath it all, it took years to wear down the aftereffects of Stanley’s early abuse. But he appears in many, many images, including my painting, “After Dinner Nap”, which inspired many commissioned portraits, but before that it inspired me to find a way to share my feline inspirations with the world. Thank you, Stanley.

This photo doesn’t show you much about Stanley, but for me it is a reminder of how my cats have inspired me at every moment since I’ve lived with them, training me to keep my eyes open and always be ready for that unique image, keeping my creative spirit alive and my creative intellect in top condition, in a way living two lives at once, to live the moment, and to record the moment.

I often called Stanley “Stripe” because he was a tabby, and in this photo the confluence of all those stripes was just breathtaking. Straight geometric stripes in the shadows from my deck rail coming in at an obtuse and unsettled angle, the deck boards themselves and the gaps between at a normal and comforting angle, and striped Stanley breaking all the straight lines as he curled in a perfect circle for a nap; I could never have posed this or composed this, but what a moment to remember. And if Stanley had not been there I probably would have noticed the shadows as I was working in the garden but not taken the photo, probably busy harvesting green beans or tomatoes, so I have him to thank for this moment.

Late in the Year

About the artwork

This is my little formerly feral kitty, Moses. It is “late in the year”, as the photo is titled from November 2005, at age 19 it was also late in her life, using a year as a metaphor.

“Portrait of a senior kitty”…this is a favorite of my black and white photos. Aside from a strict adherence to twice-daily mealtimes, her one and only absolute necessity was a sunbath, preferrably al fresco, every day to help soothe the arthritis that had built in her somewhat hobbled hind legs.

I took this photo during the last warm day in November, just three months before she died. Some viewers have told me they have a difficult time piecing the image together because her features are distorted by age, her eyes set deep, her cheekbones sunken, nose slightly flattened by dehydration and ear tips curved as the skin on those extremities begins to wither, but I knew every hair, every feature. And those who’ve loved a cat into this era of their life can see the details right away.

This image of Moses was so meaningful because others recognized their felines in in that I chose her as one of my animal sympathy cards. See the whole set.

About the artwork

The eyes really have it! It’s the most extraordinary thing about black cats, the way their eyes just glow against their fur, no matter what color their eyes happen to be. And Bella has those round eyes in that round face, and if that wasn’t enough she was sitting with her tail curved just so. I did all I could to have her look directly up at me without standing up, and I got my wish. Though formerly feral, Bella is a very talented feline model!

Bella’s Basket of Dreams

Bella spends some time in the basket almost every day, and I can hardly pass up the opportunity to photograph her. How could I pass up such beauty? I’m fairly certain she knows the effect she has on me, judging by the purr-fect poses she finds.

I took this photo with my smartphone and originally filtered it with my phone and Instagram, but to ensure the print quality I refiltered it in Photoshop.

Sometimes my giclees look so much like my originals that even I have a difficult time telling them apart when they are in frames.

I don’t keep giclee prints in stock for most of my works. Usually I have giclees printed as they are ordered unless I have an exhibit where I’ll be selling a particular print so there is a wait of up to two weeks before receipt of your print to allow for time to print and ship.

Because the standard size canvas prints are not proportional to the original painting, canvas prints of this painting will have a portion cropped off of each side.

I usually have at least one of the smaller sizes of canvases on hand, but order larger ones as they are ordered here because customers often want a custom size. Smaller canvases are 3/4″ in depth, Canvases 12 x 16 and larger are 1-1/2″ in depth. On these prints the image wraps around the edges.

I sign all prints next to my original signature.

Surprise!

Basil must have thought the yellow basket was a gift for him because he owned it from the day it came into the house, which was the day I was running errands and saw it…atop someone’s trash pile. I sprayed it down and rinsed it in the basement and let it air dry, then brought it up to the magic basket spot, and Basil was immediately IN THE BASKET, looking totally cute, big, long, white whisker and all.

But especially his glowing amber eyes! We had some glowing sunny days and I hardly photographed anything but Basil and his amber eyes in the basket including the one I’d first seen of him with his round eyes looking over the edge of the basket.

Tortoishell cats can be camouflaged against many backgrounds with all their irregular speckles and dots. This photo of Cookie taken in the spring of 2010 truly shows her ability to blend into her background as her orange and tan blend with last year’s leaves and her green eyes blend with the spring’s new growth. I could not love her more.

Great spangled fritillary, isn’t that a great name? I use it sometimes as a silly sort of interjection when I’m surprised. It really is this butterfly’s name, though, and I captured this photo of one intently feeding on really fragrant milkweed along the Panhandle Trail.

This female Tiger Swallowtail butterfly is in her black form or dark phase. This dark cloaking mimics the poisonous Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly, and predators have adapted to avoid them, so the black form female Tiger Swallowtail keeps herself safe though she is not at all dangerous while she is absolutely beautiful in old-fashioned midsummer phlox.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This Black Phase Tiger Swallowtail butterfly’s body is what always fascinates me—big bold white polka dots on black. They love this old-fashioned phlox, given to me by an elderly neighbor many years and two houses ago. It’s very fragrant and many insects and even birds visit it all summer.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Joe-pye is a native wild plant, a soft pink in tufts on tall plants in the early autumn woods. Tiger swallowtail butterflies skip from one tall stalk to another, delicately walking on the fluff and feeding. The brilliant yellow, the colorful spots and the striped body look very festive.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Such a huge variety of flowers in buckets at the market! I visit many farmer’s markets through the summer now that every community seems to have one at least once a week, to purchase what my garden is not producing. All the farmers are local and are small family farms and I enjoy meeting the people who grow my food, and who took the time to pick it and sort it and wash it and pack it the day of the market. This particular farmer had buckets and buckets of flowers and in the light from the sky all the flowers were so vibrant I couldn’t pass them up.

I found this bunch of marbles in the soil of a yard where I lived years ago. None is valuable, but are all interesting and were probably some child’s collection of neat stuff that somehow got tossed in the yard—big brother teasing? little sister go hold of them? mom tired of the noise of them rolling around the floor? They were all in an area where I’d dug my garden and I found them as I tilled the soil, so unfortunately some of them are nicked or scraped.

Right now I use them in the bottom of flasks and bottles with cut flowers and plant cuttings, but I rinsed them and laid them in the sun to dry and I really lost my marbles with the inspiration of the color, iridescence, reflections and refracted light through colored glass in early spring sun. This is one of many, many photos. I can guarantee you’ll be seeing more from this particular photo shoot.
