North Hills Art Center Art for Animals Submissions

Art for Animals submissions

I dropped off submissions to the North Hills Art Center annual Art for Animals exhibit to benefit the Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary, which takes in farm animals and livestock who need to be rescued from negative or inhumane conditions.

You’ve seen two of these paintings in the past few months, Big Blue and Nikka’s Jupiter Ball. I have plenty of new animal artwork already, but I decided I had to do a painting including farm animals.

Occasionally, some of the cats I rescue or TNR need to move to a new site. A friend has a small farm surrounded but other small farms, all cat-friendly. Oh, the sheep in their stalls, her little herd of goats, the chickens! One of the times I went to the farm with a delivery of feral cats I took the reference photo for this painting. Of course I would photograph any cat I saw, and I love the chickens, so when I saw this group of chickens in the green green grass….hey, one of those things is not a chicken. I laughed that the cat was the same color as the chickens and immediately thought something about a “witness protection program.”

But while I’m all about the dignity of sentient creatures and take their images seriously I remembered this photo and knew I had to paint it. Kitty has his back to us but his ears are turned our way. Did his cover somehow get blown? Should he hit the road?

But of course I had to put a “kitty word” in the title so it became “Witness Purrtection Program.”

It’s a pastel and I wanted to keep it loose and active, as if the breeze is rippling the grass and the chickens are moving. I framed it without a mat in a dark rough plank wood frame that coordinates with the old fence boards. I’m so happy with it.

Where to find “Witness Purrtection Program”
