An Autumn Walk Down Main Street

Monet

I took a walk down to Main Street today, ostensibly to run errands to the Post Office, pharmacy and store, but I also had my DSLR and all my lenses and filters with me and took a few gigabytes of photos along the way. A perfect autumn afternoon is quite the inspiration, as was the fact that, three weeks past my hip replacement, I’m more than ready to take a walk! I couldn’t walk with my usual long strides and quick pace, but more like ambling along with my cane, but that was perfect for finding the details that moved me to inspiration along the way, some photographed as they are, some with a slightly different focus: flowers in others’ gardens, autumn leaf color, plantings in the parking lots, bees and butterflies, my favorite trees, and more.

Neighbor’s stunning rose

I’ve been taking these walks down Main Street for almost 20 years, beginning about the time I began working at home in 2000 because I went to the bank and Post Office at the end of nearly every work day, at least before online banking and email started changing our old habits.

Contrasts

But it wasn’t just for the sake of business that I’ve taken these walks. Studying, framing, creating compositions in shape and color and style, were for me like a musician sitting down to practice for a couple of hours, like a runner building up to a marathon, practice for the performance which, for me, was my daily creative tasks: design and artwork. I’ve got to keep myself in top shape and also challenge myself with something I don’t do all the time, to see things differently and bring that to others. I was nearly two years coming to my hip replacement, and it’s been more than a year since I took a walk down to Main Street, or other destinations around town, with my camera.

I’ve shared many of my favorites from today, in the approximate order they appeared to me, here and in the gallery below. Enjoy!

I’ve published other walks about town in my photo galleries as well, and in 2017 hosted a poetry reading with photos and paintings entitled “Walking Around: Finding Extraordinary Things in Ordinary Places”, where you can read and find links to other photos.
