August Featured Artwork

I’m still working my way through a really big assignment and haven’t been able to choose my September featured artwork for nature or felines and put my monthly desktop calendars together. I know it’s going to be at least another day, so if you’d still like to register for an account and order a free matted print of either of these paintings, they are still available! Scroll down to read more about how to register and about each painting.

I always feature something beachy for my July or August desktop calendar, and this painting was a natural for this year. I am immensely proud of how the wave turned out, and really I’m pretty pleased with all of it.

The title is true, I just decided to be honest there. The seagull is standing on a beach on Hilton Head Island and I’d like to be there at just about any point, weather conditional.

I took photos of the beach when I visited my niece and I’m just working my way around to a few. It was January and the weather was quite calm so not too many exciting waves, but this colorful swell was actually very nice. The little riffle behind the gull, the curl of foam in front, I painted until I could hear it. So many of the artists I follow are painting waves these days, and I see wave workshops. I also wanted to catch that wave and just do at least one. I painted this on a scrap of Wallis sanded pastel paper because I needed to layer the pastel in just that way.

This was my painting from Day 27. See other paintings in this and other painting challenges on the page Creative Challenges.

The Purrfect Camouflage

painting of cat behind vase of flowers

The Purrfect Camouflage, 11 x 16, pastel © Bernadette E. Kazmarski

This was something I thought all cat companions could relate to, human and feline. Sophie really thought I couldn’t see her because she thought she blended right in with the flowers. She almost had me fooled until I saw one of the flowers looking back at me and I knew I had to investigate. Her ulterior motive was to eat the flowers, something I hate to clean up after. This picture was intended to be one of a pair, because in the next picture she was delicately biting a leaf.

I still remember deciding to photograph the flowers for just that reason, and looking at them, then surprised to see Sophie looking back at me when she sat up a little taller. Of course, the subject of the proposed painting changed from the flowers to Sophie.
