August Nature Desktop Calendar: Atlantic Sunrise

pastel of ocean sunrise

Atlantic Sunrise, pastel, 23″ x 17″, 1994 © Bernadette E. Kazmarski

I’m going all the way back to the beginnings of my landscape/waterscape painting for this month’s featured artwork and desktop calendar, and this painting is one of the very first.  My cats inspired me to draw them in the late 80s and my first actual painting of one was in 1988. After my first trip to see the ocean at Assateague Island in Virginia I painted several seascapes in 1994, and thereafter also included paintings of land and water in my portfolio.

I saw the ocean for the first time when I was 30, and was completely overwhelmed with all the sights and sounds of the experience. This scene is the beach on Assateague Island, VA, on a foggy September morning. At first, I could only hear the waves and not see them, then the sun rose high enough above the fog to light the scene in rich gold.

I sold the original years ago, before I had the chance to get a good photo of it for reproduction, but small prints look wonderful.

You can read more about this painting and order other sizes of prints as well here.

The featured artwork also becomes one of the New Member Gifts for the month it’s featured as well, so if you’ve been waiting to register for an account, here’s another good reason. This New Member print is a signed digital print of my watercolor painting “Atlantic Sunrise”. Prints are made in archival inks on acid-free Epson art paper. This print is 8″ x 11″ and matted in natural white mat board to fit an 11″ x 14″ frame.
