We have just enough snow that the landscape is changed to nearly black and white, clear contrasts and every little branch with its tiny frosting of snow. Driving errands today I loved the look and remembered this sketch. The graceful curve of the tracks in any season, because I admire it all the time, is an inspiration to create. In the starkness of the snowy day, the minimized palette, honestly black and white even in a photo, the trees rising straight up all around, marching up the steep hill toward the sky and starting down into the ravine on the other side, has been another inspiration I’ve wanted to sketch.
I painted this in 2017 while participating in Leslie Saeta’s annual “30 in 30” painting challenge. I pass the scene regularly in all seasons and knew I’d want to paint it in one or more of them. When I saw this snowfall and passed there, I pulled over to look for a good spot to sketch, but when I got the angle I wanted from an overpass with a narrow walkway, seeing the extra curve in the tracks that I couldn’t see from the road, I knew I wanted to sketch it in charcoal, and that I could never safely stand in that spot to do it. I made sure I took good photos.
This sketch is matted in a black core white mat and framed in a molded wood frame painted white. To purchase the original or a print, click here to visit the product post.
