Dawn on a Foggy Summer Morning - Portraits of Animals

Yesterday and last night’s rain produced a foggy morning today. When the sun finally began to shine through the mist it reminded me of this painting from 2000. It’s the view out of one of my back windows toward the east where I always enjoy seeing what the sunrise, or at least the morning sky, has to offer.

It’s a little sketch I did on a scrap of Wallis sanded pastel paper. I’m pretty sure I painted it from a photo I took because of the time of day and the light changing so fast, but I remember wanting to capture it quickly. However, no digital camera then, so I must have at least waited until the film came back which could actually be same day or next day.

I remember this pretty clearly because I think of it when I see a foggy morning, or any morning really. For a little sketch I’ve always liked it.

This little painting was in my first ever solo show in June 2000 entitled “The Extraordinary in the Ordinary,” which might look like a familiar phrase since it’s the subtitle of this very website. That’s about when I decided that’s what I was looking for as an artist, those inspirations in everyday moments.
