After yesterday’s snow, today was cold but sunny enough to melt the snow, with big puffy clouds slowly meandering overhead. I painted this little dead end street in my home town on just such a day.
I love a row of houses in the sun. This street dead ends at the top of the bank of Chartiers Creek. The houses have been there over a century, flooded several times, seen lots of people moving through, watching life with their blank window eyes. Now in brilliant winter sun they stand like old friends, the long shadows of the houses and buildings across the street reaching to touch them as the sun drops toward the horizon. The telephone pole and lines, the street light, the flag, all are markers of a place so familiar.
I painted this in pastel on a masonite board to which I added one or another pastel ground, and used mostly my softest pastels which work best on surfaces like this. The original is framed in a 1-1/2″ solid wood white molded frame with no mat and digital, giclee and canvas prints are available.
I participated in Leslie Saeta’s annual “30 in 30” painting challenge in January 2017. This was my painting for day 4.
