Evening Wildflowers - Portraits of Animals

On a sweltering, sticky August evening I discovered an incredibly beautiful patch of native wildflowers intentionally seeded at Scott Conservancy Kane Woods. I forgot about sweaty hands and the pulse of the sun directly in my face because it was also touching each and every flower on that hillside, filling leaves and petals with brilliance. I photographed my fill.

Most of the photos I took that evening I love as photos, using all the lenses and filters in my little bag, but I knew I also wanted to paint a few, to capture that light, the randomness of the echinacea, wandering fleabane and distant wingstem fading off into the haze of the sun, thriving happily in the rock-hard soil.

These flowers bloom even more fervently with the cooler nights and some autumn rains into September and October, pink among all the yellows and oranges of autumn.
