Ginger Tabbies and Black Tabbies on “Tabbies Tiles”

I’ve had a thing for tiles lately. I like them for decoration, but they are also useful as coasters or a base to display something or even hang on the wall.

I’ve had the idea of using my linoleum blocks for the “Tabbies” series to create some texture with the impression along with color. I don’t have a kiln at the ready and don’t really want one. Back in the spring when I experimented with air-dry clay for the cat show, the finish had the feel and texture of kiln-fired clay but they just began to crumble weeks after I’d made the first ones. No matter what clay I used or what finish I added to them, they just did not stand up to repeated handling. What a disappointment!

On to polymer clay

These tiles are made of polymer clay rolled thin, then pressed onto one of the inked linoleum blocks from my “Tabbies” series so they are a little dimensional and a little colorful, just as I had imagined. They are baked in the oven for 30 minutes and are highly durable with use, as described below.

NOTES ON USE:

  • YES: These work great with items filled with hot food or liquids, like mugs of coffee or tea or dishes filled with cooked food. There is not enough heat transferred to affect the polymer.
  • YES: These tiles can be used indoors or out, in wet areas like the bathroom or pool, and can even be hung on the wall.
  • NO: These are not safe for use with food. Don’t use one as a plate.
  • NO: These cannot be used with items taken out of the oven or microwave or off the stove, any item which has been heated by extended cooking—the polymer will soften from the heat.

They are about 4.75″ square, determined by the designs on the block, three of which have distinct edges that look best when cropped to the edge.
