I took the reference photo for this painting at a local greenhouse in 2013. I’ve always liked colorful gerbera daisies and their bold smiling faces. I’ve used it for a few graphic designs and decided someday I’d paint it too. So that time was in 2019.

I chose oil pastel because I’ve come to enjoy working out the flowers with layering and impasto on a rough-textured paper. Also, the tones of the colors matched the tones in the photo, and I could layer it and build up colors, then finish with working through the composition with the tip of a tool to add definition in the flowers, leaves and stems.

I began this painting on day 3 of my February 2019 Daily Creative Challenge but finished it on day 5. See other paintings in this and other painting challenges on the page Creative Challenges.

The finished painting also became a favorite for gift items like a garden flag, tote bag, placemat, votive lamp, tile, and even a few other experimental things. I’m making some of those things right now, in fact.
