I took the reference photo for this painting at a local greenhouse in 2013. I’ve always liked colorful gerbera daisies and their bold smiling faces. I’ve used it for a few graphic designs and decided someday I’d paint it too. So that time was now. I chose oil pastel because I’ve come to enjoy working out the flowers with layering and impasto on a rough-textured paper.
I chose oil pastel because the tones of the colors matched the tones in the photo, and I could layer it and build up colors, then finish with working through the composition with the tip of a tool to add definition in the flowers, leaves and stems. When I frame this I will crop it in from the edges a bit. I can see it on a tote bag or placemat too. I guess we’ll see!
I began this painting on day 3, but finished it on day 5 of my painting challenge. See other paintings in this and other painting challenges on the page Creative Challenges. I sold the original during my February 2019 Creative Challenge.
