Incoming Storm, pencil is 22″ x 16″, framed with a vintage solid oak roll frame and soft flecked cream and tan mats.
About “Incoming Storm”
I had painted a favorite autumn landscape already that day and moved to another section of the beach on Lake Erie at North East. But an October storm was rapidly coming over the horizon, the bright sun already dimmed by overcast and the soft warm temperature dissipating as gusts of wind began to whip the trees and white caps formed. I knew I only had a few minutes if I also wanted to safely pack everything up and get to my car, or to some cover, before the storm hit because I’d set out with no cover at all.
I staked my easel into the sand and held it in place with my left hand as my drawing board was acting like a sail while I sketched as quickly as possible with my right hand. Then I covered the sketch and tucked it into a portfolio to carry and didn’t even fold up my easel but headed to the car.
Catching a quick meal and already packed to leave I started back on my two-hour drive home, thinking of the vintage oak frame I’d picked up somewhere, perfect for that vintage Victorian look of a monochrome sketch on creamy paper with creamy mats.
Here’s the framed version; please pardon the reflections on the glass.
It came together as I’d envisioned, but because at that time pencil was difficult for me to reproduce, having only a film camera and a scanner with a low resolution, I’ve only displayed it a few times and never added it to any website because it was nearly impossible to present well. But I’ve quietly enjoyed it each time I looked at it in my house.
Now that I’ve been able to scan and present the original sketch, and others have noticed it in some of my shows and open houses, it’s time to bring it to light!
