The Old Apple Tree - Portraits of Animals

A little bit of mist among the trees illuminated by the rising sun, tinges of gold among the leaves, but the old apple tree will hold its leaves until they begin to turn bronze in the first frost. The land that is Carnegie Park was a farm less than a century ago, and this apple tree has probably been producing for far longer than that.

I was in the park for an event, setting up in the early morning. I took this and other photos but would not have a chance to sketch. The following year I was both pulling art together and painting new pieces for our annual local exhibit, “Carnegie Painted”. I remembered this photo and tried to make it back to the park to paint en plein air but the moment had long passed, and I really wanted this image, not another. I decided to paint from the photo I’d taken and just kept it small and loose, the way I would have if I’d painted in the park, capturing the angled tree, the morning sun on the grass, the mist among the trees in the distance. I don’t think I could have done better in person.
