Mimi’s got the right idea! Soon enough this morning it was too hot even for this, but it reminded me of this painting, as did the skirts and dresses which I also wore this past week. Some things really don’t change much, and me and Mimi outside in the morning is one of them, whether it’s 80 degrees at 9:00 a.m. or snow-covered and icy.

This was painted from a photo I took in August 2015. I’d always wanted to do a simple little painting of it: my colorful dresses and skirts moving gently in the breeze, the bricks in the patio outside my basement door, the bright sun and shadows, Mimi relaxing on the concrete step in the shade of the laundry. Just a nice memory of a simple summer morning.

Note that Mimi actually wears a harness and leash when we are outdoors. Sometimes I leave it out of paintings, but sometimes you can’t even see it. None of my cats are permitted to wander but I’ve always had a few who came outdoors with me to hang laundry and work in the garden. Someday they’ll get that catio I’ve been promising them.

I painted this in watercolors on my 6 x 9 pad of 140 lb. watercolor paper. I enjoy painting on that little watercolor pad, the perfect weight, texture and size, and I’m so glad I found it. just working with it makes me more confident.
