Getting Ready for Hearts and Paws This Saturday, June 22

I’ve been pretty busy making things lately! Hearts and Paws (information below) is coming up, so I’m stocking up for that and for my loosely-planned Open House next month. That means I’m making way more things than usual and it takes whole days. So when I have several things to make for events and to have in stock—tiles, magnets, pins, accessory bags, totes, little purses, plaques, frames…and more—I have to spend more time each week in production.

Like the little kitty things above, refrigerator magnets and pins. I make the shapes from polymer clay and bake them. I may have decided on the designs for them before that, but this time I just make things and decided I’d figure that out later. I set them up to size and print them out on opaque transfer paper, cut them out, then press the transfers onto the clay pieces with my heat press or with my iron for small things. like these. Then I trim them and sand the edges, and some of them are detailed with ink or paint. Magnets get the magnet glued on the back, and pinks get the pin back glued on the back.

Whew! That’s a lot of work. That’s why I usually make one product each week as I run out of merchandise or get new ideas, so it doesn’t monopolize a whole day. But sometimes I can’t help it, and it is fun, though exhausting.

I made a cat-shaped cookie cutter from one of my sketches but not for cookies–these are polymer clay kitties ready to be decorated for refrigerator magnets, pins, pendants, and who knows what else I’ll come up with. I have never ever seen a cat cookie cutter I liked and besides I would rather have one in my own design to make these things. I used a piece of scrap metal and needle-nosed pliers. I see more designs coming soon!

Here are some more photos of my magnets and pins, and below that new tiles.

I worked out new ways to make my tiles too, so they are neater, and I got the times down for transferring the image so that all of them are clear with no distortions.

Giuseppe inspected them, and had a big yawn. I hope that’s not how humans react!

Maybe I’ll see you there this Saturday. If not, I’ll have things listed here as soon as I can.

This is one of my favorites because it’s not only a totally pet loving audience, it’s also a nature and wildlife audience and I can bring everything.

I’ll have as much of my handmade goods as I can pack and set up, plus greeting cards, garden flags, prints of artwork on paper and canvas. I may have a few selected originals and framed prints because people like to see them.

I’m usually near HCMT and Pittsburgh CAT for this event so I get to hang out with kitties too. That’s really fun for meeting a lot of pets and adoptable animals and seeing old friends and and meeting new ones. Most of all, I love getting out there with my stuff after spending hours in my studio.
