Four new feline votives.

Four new feline votives.

Last week when I made five new votives trying out a few new techniques I had plenty more ideas but ran out of the label material I use to print the images I burnish onto the jars. I found an alternate material to try but didn’t care for it. The labels are available again and I finished up one set of ideas I’d had for the feline designs, specifically the ones for the jars with four sides accommodating four images, and also Winter Window.

Giuseppe was literally getting in my face while I photographed these votives so I asked him if he’d like to model them.

Since we’re not recycling glass anymore I can use those glass jars from condiments and pickles and such for votives, but to be perfectly honest I’d had this idea for so long that I started saving them several years ago, and always did save interesting jars, often using them in the kitchen to store things like beans and pasta. I have no shortage of jars, and each one offers a new opportunity.

I etch the inside to diffuse the light from the candle and have either a vinyl label I’ve printed or hand-painting on the outside. Because I’m largely using recycled jars each one is unique and I enjoy fitting the art or image to the shape and size of the jar. To some of them I add an extra finish with alcohol inks in areas where a label won’t cover easily.

All the smaller ones are $15 each including shipping (or $10 if you’re local and can pick up) and include an LED candle.

Winter Window Feline Votive

Winter Window Feline Votive

This glass votive is etched by hand and finished with a clear label I printed from my painting “Winter Window”. It’s made from a repurposed glass pickle jar 5″ tall x 3.25″ diameter and comes with an LED tea light. Price includes shipping.

I etched the inside of the vase to better diffuse the light from the candle, then printed the design on a purchased clear vinyl label and burnished it onto the vase. The design repeats twice on this votive.

“Winter Window” is an original pastel on drawing paper I prepared myself, image size 8″ x 8″ painted in 2002 right in my office while Kelly looked out the window, and as often happens capturing that moment of inspiration also catches something essential that more planned paintings don’t. Though only I would recognize this as Kelly and she is facing away I will always feel I captured something very deep about her personality and about our relationship with this simple image.

I etched the inside of the vase to better diffuse the light from the candle, then printed the design of four individual paintings on a purchased clear vinyl label and burnished it onto the vase. The curved glass areas are painted with turquoise permanent alcohol ink.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I was so taken by the exhibit “Van Gogh Close Up” that I began visualizing sketches of my cats and other things in techniques and colors that van Gogh may have used, the thick impasto of the paint, the contrasting outlines of figures and bright bold non-objective colors The first of these was “Two Cats After van Gogh”, using oil pastel to create the layered impasto and texture.
