Spring Evening on the Hills

pastel painting of Spring Evening on the Hills

Spring Evening on the Hills, pastel, 7 x 7, 2005 © Bernadette E. Kazmarski

A view out my back window, a theme I’ve returned to so many times, but then, when I walk past one of the windows looking out to the east across the valley it’s already framed like a painting by the window. What an inspiration.

Since this view is in the east, this scene shows the colors of evening turning to sunset reflected on the eastern sky and spring trees. It’s a small painting, 7″ x 7″, just a quick sketch to capture the feel of it with little detail because it was the colors that I found inspiring, and how the landscape takes its own form and becomes abstract.

It’s funny that I framed it at the time as a 5 x 7, possibly just because I had a frame on hand that worked well for it. I’ve looked at it on my wall all these years, remembering it was larger than that and recently decided to reframe it in its original size. Square paintings, especially small sketches often en plein air, were a real thing with me around then and I’m glad I changed my mind about it. Not only do I still love that square format, but I love it because it actually expresses the scene best, which is one of the reasons I gravitate to a square shape in the first place.

Purchase Spring Evening on the Hills in the original or as a print

I love it as a small sketch but I also experimented with larger versions of it and it looks great at larger sizes. I offer it up to 12 x 12 but can do larger prints, so please ask if you’d like one.

“Spring Evening on the Hills” is a pastel, 7″ x 7″, on sanded pastel paper. I also offer giclee prints as well as digital and canvas prints.
