My mother grew columbines in the back yard when I was growing up. They started with just a few colors but eventually the pinks and violets mixed and interbred with the native indigo and red/yellow. The variety was overwhelming to my young eyes, young enough that some of the columbines bloomed taller than me.

Of course, I had no photos of the columbines from our back yard. This painting is another piece borne of January inspiration in my seed and flower catalogs, the little bunch of flower inspired me to think back to those joyful colorful columbines from my childhood and use the layout of the photo to design a painting of those columbines from long ago.

One of my favorite flowers, and also a favorite of my mother, I gave this painting to her as a birthday present one year. She has since passed away and I’ve sold her home, and kept the artwork I’d done. I sold the original to a good friend to give to her mother but this image will always remind me of my mother.
