Inspired by summer flowers in my yard and beyond, here are three roomy totes for shopping, for the beach, or even for a nice big purse. I made three flower designs, and have more in mind.
Below is “Greenhouse Gerberas”, an oil pastel painting I created from photos I’d take at a favorite greenhouse.
I’ve had this idea for a few years for a larger tote bag. It’s based on the larger size fabric transfer I use, which is 11″ x 17″. My idea was to make a fabric swatch that entire size, then back it with a solid color fabric. But when I mocked one up using paper I didn’t like the shape so much, too wide, but I didn’t want to waste any “printed” fabric nor waste any fabric transfer material by having two or three inches left over; I could print on that for pins and earrings and other sorts of things, but it wouldn’t be easy to run through my printer.
Below is “Market Flowers”, probably one of the most popular photos I’ve ever taken, a candid of a bucket of cut flowers at a local community farmer’s market.
So back to the 11″ x 17″ size front and back, and to make it a size and shape I liked I folded paper and slipped it up into the bottom of the paper mock up until I liked the depth and shape of the bag. That ended up being about 2″ extra front and back which made the final bag about 13″ tall. Looking at the composition I decided to plan on making the extra fabric at the bottom a coordinating color rather than making them all in natural color, and also decided to back the bag with the same color fabric.
Below is “Poppies”, an acrylic painting I created from a photo of my neighbor’s spectacular poppies.
So I’ll see how popular these designs are, and I also have other ideas for designs that might work. Let me know what you think and if you’d like to see a certain design.
