“Suddenly, it’s spring, and most days are really sunny! After this winter it’s totally captivating, and distracting. I can’t go anywhere without seeing possible paintings. Like this these, which I photographed as I didn’t have my sketching materials with me because, for the past couple of months, there hasn’t been anything I wanted to sketch, really. I’ll have to pick up the bag when I leave the house, along with my camera…so much to carry,” I said in 2014 when I shared these two paintings.

These two small paintings are based on photos taken just minutes apart as I rode my bike around town. The similarities in the light and limited palette made me choose these two out of several and I used the same few pastels and techniques for both of them.

In “The Bench in Spring,” I have photos of that bench in all seasons since it’s on a regular route that I often walk and was waiting for one to come along that I’d want to paint. I’d never seen this view of it, though, that nearly solid shadow at the bottom and the dance of green and yellow in the new leaves so I finally had my subject.

In “Spring Sidewalk” it was the loveliness of the row of street trees and the deep shadows contrasted with the brilliant sunlight, the vivid green grass and young green leaves. It’s just a simple walk down a sidewalk, changing each minute of the day, and each day of spring, but still so special.
